  • An introduction to Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, this video lays out the striking tension between the claims of modern ideology and the persistence of human conscience. Ideology justifies the taking of human life for the greater good, and promises a soothed conscience. In contrast, the conscience tells human beings that they cannot do wrong in order to do right. No book illuminates this tension more than Crime and Punishment. It is on one hand a deeply human problem--the conflict between evil and conscience. It is on the other hand a deeply MODERN problem since ideology promises to wipe out the sense of evil and justify actions thereby.
