  • Dostoevsky's Book The Idiot: amzn.to/45slKKs
    Dostoevsky was a 19th-century Christian existentialist writer. In this (hyper-interpreted) video, we try to figure out what kind of life could assert that "beauty will save the world."
    This video's style is largely inspired by the following channels:
    @PursuitofWonder
    @boyinthebadlands
    The Dostoevsky Archive (1997) - Peter Sekirin
    The Idiot (1869) - Fyodor Dostoevsky
    Nobel Lecture in Literature (1970) - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn www.nobelprize.org/prizes/lit...
    Other sources are informal.
    Dostoevsky's other great books:
    Demons: amzn.to/3YP9bpW
    Crime and Punishment: amzn.to/47RttDl
    The Brothers Karamazov: amzn.to/3PfToO4

      I love that book. I only read it about a year and a half ago and it was perfect timing with everything that was going on in my life. I loved reading about his internal struggles, his defense of his sister, his compassion towards Sonya and her family, his gradually slipping mask of sanity, him staggering to the police office for his confession and his new view on life as he is in Siberia. I wish I read him in high school. I only made it through the first few chapters of Brothers Karamazov in hs and gave up. I recently finished that masterpiece a little over a year ago. I think that to understand his writings you have to had experienced suffering in a mental or social capacity resulting in loneliness, isolation and/or despair. If one denies and dismisses the pain of suffering in their life and lives superficially, it's harder to see what he is trying to tell us. Even then his psychological insight is so keen that he can show you yourself even if you don't wish to see it.

      Relatively recently I reread "Crime and Punishment" and it was amazing. It sounds incredibly fresh, like someone wrote it nowadays. And lots of topics there are still relevant, and you can sympathize with almost all the characters. Dostoevsky is phenomenal indeed.

After I started brewing (for fun), I become excited whenever I get my hands on an empty bottle - after all, it can be used to store what I brew! What I learned is that a thing's value is based on how it could be used. Grace, symmetry, order, symbiosis, art, creativity, passion, .. symmetry and beauty, even in the arts, mathematics, sciences, engineering, and more, ... Beauty of the soul , harmony, systematic order... Beauty can be manifest in all these things, spiritually, mentally, emotionally, physically
    Though in terms of metaphorically, I cannot see any immediate benefit other than a sentimental type value, however have 'beauty' as the basis for our approach to life, and in all things we do...

    I feel like I relate to this guy on a spiritual level and he was a great philosopher. The importance of beauty is often underestimated. If people dont see the beauty in the world they may not get the feeling there is truly something to protect and something to live for. We could fail to save the world because too many people found it not worth saving and making an effort. A lack of beauty and lack of hope is dangerous. And beauty makes life feel meaningful and and actually worth living. Beauty is there originally in nature but humans often ruin it. Tragic life, I feel sorry for what him and his friends went through. At least he didn't completely lose sense of hope

    Beauty and creativity go hand in hand. Our problems are an opportunity to build a solution. Solutions are an epic triumph of order over chaos. When trouble is encountered, and creativity is summoned to dispell it, beauty is the result.
    When you see a beautiful work of art, consider all the trial and error the artist must have gone through to attain those skills. Any great work required pain and sacrifice to make.

    absolutely beautiful! I've been reading Dostoevsky since my family and I converted to Eastern Orthodoxy and the words "beauty will save the world" are spoken by my Priest almost monthly in his Homilies - such that it resounds in my mind almost daily as of late. I have truly been captivated by Beauty and am thankful for the minority that make reminders like this one. Thank you for the video, it brought tears to my eyes and gratitude to my heart.

    Beauty too can improve humanity as a whole due to the fact that if a beautiful person were to appear to a not so beautiful person, the person will feel inadequate and most likely will imitate that beautiful person and even surpass it and one day someone will surpass that person too and the cycle will continue until the humanity itself embodied "beauty".

    Dostoevsky is a true gem to learn from

    Definitely a great video essay. The opening was great, it took us very quickly into the early life and years of Dostoyevsky, most people would take a couple of minutes to narrate that, but here it was done in only a minute or two; not to mention, the quotes supplemented the story, great opening.
    I believe it starts getting a bit tricky with who said what at about 2:00 as many characters are introduced with a very brief introduction, if lengthened it would accentuate the chronological understanding of things, unless a ring structure is desired.
    The ending clears the fog in the aforementioned as it repeats the names and gives far lengthy introduction of the people mentioned, it also loops finishing any unfinished topics such as the execution. One of the things that I really enjoyed was ending the video by a deep, chilling quote by the man himself.
    Overall, I loved the ring structure and I was very impressed by the editing. I would say if you were to give less context in the mid-video and let all the empty knowledge complete in the end it would perfect the ring structure of the video essay.

    I'm convinced that if there were more beauty, human experience and life would be enriched, and out of that enriched experience would come a greater empathy and appreciation for other experiences (other people, for example). As Pierce Brown writes in Red Rising, Death begets death begets death - but the opposite can also be true :enriched lives beget enriched lives.

    • @zakosist

      I absolutely agree. I even think the overall sense of beauty people have on a large scale, could determine the fate of the world. Whether people truly have a sense of there is something to protect and preserve or they dont see the point. It can hugely impact what effort people make, what they value and how they act. Valuing life itself (whether were talking individual lives or species preservation, or the right for each one to have a good life and certain rights) requires seeing beauty in life. And I think people more overall content are naturally kinder (but some can still suffer a lot and yet have a lot of compassion)

    One could say it is those who have suffered the most, who have been to Hell and back, that have the most appreciation for the beauty in the world. Beauty is like a candlelight, small and easy to miss, yet hypnotic and otherworldly when one takes the time to look at it and appreciate it, especially when it comes close to being snuffed out.

    Guess, one of the worst things you can do to yourself is no giving value to life itself; yours and from everything around you
    I believe that I finally redeemed myself from that way of thinking, and surely took a long time to learn that, but it was very worth it at the end

    "Beauty" is the ground of being; this is one way of experiencing it. It could also be called "Order" or "Perfection." It cannot be seen at all when reality is divided into beautiful and ugly. In traditional cultures the beauty way is the natural way of life. Seeing beauty is seeing the good and the true, that transcendent light holding all, denying none. Within this field beings may choose blindness to beauty if they wish. Blindness us war, property, competition, struggle.
