“No one wants to hear a 20 year old tell them what they think about how the world works”
So he respectfully waited until he was 30 to do that exact thing
Yes.
Bo Burnham is pretty mature for his age. He seems to be an anomaly. That’s probably how he was able to get an older girlfriend / partner. There are 50 year olds who refuse to learn and grow and Bo seems to yearn learning and growing as a human. . . And he’s very funny
//alright alright, it’s a white sock.
triggered over a sock or what
What's amazing is he literally wrote a song called "How the World Works" in the new special, and then he had a sock puppet sing it lol.
"He has a black sock-"
"See already I don't like him."
"Sorry a white sock."
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
And it came fast too :D
Bahahaha Dammit Bo you got me there
Quicken Loans speed too
Yeah, Mark Maron can't fuck with Bo Burnham, he just can't
I dont understand
i like how the older guys try to act chill when bo says something funny but when they say something funny bo laughs really loud and doesnt hold back at all

These guys have been around jokes and zingers for 20 or more years.. they’re just more used to being around comics
Except the guy sitting next to bo, he’s cool
I love that he incorporated a sock in his newest special. It's a really nice callback to his favorite comedian while also becoming its own thing.
I hadn't picked up on this, great observation!
Yes, thank you! It was the reason why I'm heere on this vid, actually. xD
And it was a white sock
As a Dutch person that was an unexpected pull
Also Socko was the WWE Superstar Mankind's famous sock name
"alright alright alright, its a white sock" holy fucking shit i think my spleen exploded lmao

He gutted Maron on the spot 😂

“I think Bo is really healthy”
*watches Inside 10 years later*
“Yeah, so about that…”
(Which just goes to show that everyone goes through pain and discussing if someone is healthy isn’t really necessary)
He said he's fine, Bo is a character he made to express his opinion or emotions more on his shows (recently Inside). He does have anxiety and all of that, but he's doing okay. Hopefully that makes you feel better knowing that
Bo wouldn't have been able to pull of that production if he was nearly as ill as he was portraying. He clearly knew what those feelings are like, but I think he was putting in on a bit or dramatising it for the sake of the production.
I mean... Depression and anxiety is pretty vanilla when it comes to comedians. Like Artie Lange is a heroin addict for example. Bert Kerschler is narcissistic and i don't even know what is wrong with Ari Shaffir😂
Ohh Bobby Lee! Now that's a major fucked up dude. Sexually abused as a child and choose any personality disorder with empathy issues , he has them😂. I could list like 50 other comedians has much more damaging illnesses
Bo: “I don’t want to tell anybody how the world work’s.”
Bo (in 2020): “🎵THAAAAAT IS HOW THE WORLD WORRRRKS.”

@@rjs2107 well, he filmed/produced the special in 2020. So Zydeco Moon was actually correct, bestie

The “ok, it was a white sock.” I think was the joke that changed a few of the older guy’s opinions. And then his self-awareness disarmed them. I have always been fascinated by this video and the dynamics within.
I think the honest respect Garry had for Bo kinda helped build a bridge for that too. Garry doesn't get enough credit.
Same dude, I come back and watch clips all the time from this episode. It really is insightful. I wish something like this still was in production where they gathered a few comedians to just shoot the shit about comedy and life in a serious/funny manner.
Lol Ray cracked up
I loved that joke. One of my favourites.
It really is an interesting dynamic as you mentioned and I too have come back to watch this very scene many times. I've seen a lot of round table discussions between comics as well and often times if there is a duckling amongst them they are usually ignored or savagely taken down like a pack of hyena's that just found a zebra with a broken leg. The opening joke Bo does in the clip is what started it all when he showed he had the gull to pop a joke at the legends saying "who are you?"
Now obviously this was hosted and Paul was going to go around and give everyone a chance to answer at least one question from each of the the comics so the moment he asked Bo the question it was a make or break moment and given the story he gave it should have actually failed but like you mention the sock bit is what saves it and that exact moment he got the respect from his peers for being able to think on the fly and deliver a funny quip. So much so that for a period after him explaining the Dutch absurdist comedian the focus was entirely on him which must have felt amazing for Bo that he was the center of attention by well seasoned and legendary comedians. Another interesting thing that occurred as well was the Carlin joke Gary did. Like I said I've seen many of these sit downs with comedians and often times if there is someone there who isn't worth their time to construct a joke they often don't do it, but Gary tells a whole Carlin story with the punchline being about Bo. Which at least I'm sure further cemented the respect Gary had for him in Bo's mind. I would imagine when they left the set Bo must have felt like he was on cloud nine. I know I would have been. I also like how Gary flexed his comedy chops as well when Paul said all he worried about was his hair when he was 20yrs old and Gary responsed immediately with a quick witted dead end hair joke.
Since bo has stated multiple times he's introverted, and being introverted myself, I can only imagine how uncomfortable he might have been after the first 3 minutes. When people start complimenting me or talking about me, etc, I try desperately to change the subject as soon as possible lmao.
Nice beard!
I much rather talk about myself. Introverts are boring as fuck.
Introversion doesn't necessarily mean you are uncomfortable being around people, or that you're shy. It just means you have a preference to mostly be on your own, or spend time with a limited amount of people most of the time. An introvert who isn't shy definitely could spend time in a crowd of people for awhile and be alright. Maybe Just exhausted afterwards.
That's not introversion, my dear.
There are multiple diverse shades of introversion
"Bo seems healthy!"
That one didn't age well.

You can look up the whole show that features the sock thing - "Live in London" by Hans Teeuwen - it's on youtube, the whole show split into about 8 parts or so. He's Dutch but that show is him in English.
mabusestestament I think he just meant the black/white joke
Having seen Inside, I can totally see that Bo loves Hans Teeuwen. He finally did his own absurdist show and even incorporated a sock.
It's Hans Teeuwen

Not really.
Sarah Davids I agree
I just love how respectful the older comedians are towards Bo. They could have very easily had the attitude of "Who the hell does this 20 year old think he is?", but they really gave him his place which is awesome to see.

The exchanges between Bo and Gary were SURREAL. Each representing their generation famously and genuinely. Love their exchanges of curiosity and respect.
It felt like gary genuinely wanted to delve deeper into serious conversation, and especially by the end of the vid seems annoyed by the surrounding comics by always turning it into something funny
@@ballsuckerunited Naa i think his annoyance is caused by host Paul. Constantly forcing him to talk about his spiritual journey which Garry thought this shirt format is not suited for that conversation. Let's stick to the jokes... I'm guessing of course but the amount of Garry Shandling stuff i watched directs me to that thought
I’d love to see a security cam of just the two of them hanging in a room for an hour
6:47 After watching his new special this hit so different
"Are you damaged?"
"Bo: No, i just..."
I love Garry Shandling's vibe with Bo in this whole clip - 0:18 when he is nodding in approval at the young kid nailing his entrance, and then immediately ripping it back at him - just great stuff
I love seeing Bo's body language. He seem really gracious, and excited to be there.
He seemed hella terrified...unless he was talking about his craft
Man he looks terrified, tou can see how hes always hugging himself, even wrapping his arms around his leg, the mans anxious.
Can anyone comprehend the fact that he could have been feeling multiple, different emotions at the time as well? 😐 Bc y'all argue like u can read his mind
Being Bo’s age now and just getting into performing at the boring bars in my town really puts into perspective how successful and ahead of his age Bo really is. Incredible talent and im so grateful to be alive at the same time as him.

Social Media has been a thing since the 80's...Just not as many people used it as they do today.
But things like advertising? Lol advertising in massive cities and things like that to get people to come and watch you has been around since the 10th century. How do you think Circuses existed? Being a Comedian is no different. It's just how you get the audience is.
4:10 After watching that exchange, I really wish Garry had lived to see Make Happy. I wonder what he would have thought of some of the bits in that special, especially the end.
and then inside!!
Hearing Garry Shandling's really sweet affection for the heart and talent of this kid just makes me love him. I love Bo Burnham, but I think Shandling helped me understand him better.
The white sock comment had me absolutely TAKEN ABACK and gasping for air
SHOOK!! haha
@@AzureKnightz Sure. So Bo is giving an example of what his comic does on stage and painting a picture of his performance for everyone to envision by saying "he uses a black sock," but Marc hears about the sock and immediately says "see, already I don't like him." Marc is saying this as if to imply "Any comic that uses a sock on stage is weird, this seems like a corny hand-puppet kind of joke. You've only just started telling me about him and I already don't think this comedian is my style," but Bo quickly turns it into a joke about Marc being racist rather than being undecided about the sock prop, itself. So Bo is basically saying, "Alright, jeez, you don't like the sock because it's black. Fine, let's just say it's a white sock." when really Marc's critique obviously had nothing to do with race lol
its socko!

care about things so much until you become numb of caring, then you definetly wont care so much about silly things, and it will make you aware of your limitations as well as your strenghts, nothing more nothing less, and i guess thats what bo is, true to himself, and it is what he shows

You Already Know you dont sound like that in the slightest.
Read a lot of books and socialize.
This video made me realize that a lot more comic would go to therapy or self-help groups if there was an audience
.... you just came up with an amazing idea for a show lol
The way Ron Jermey is looming behind Bo is really funny and unsettling
Shandling was not ready for that "Western comedy vs Eastern comedy" question at all and definitely earned Shandling's respect for asking it
I'm glad he didn't try to bullshit up a deep answer because it's really a false dichotomy. "Eastern" culture is so diverse that any attempts to make a general statement on it will fall flat and probably only take Hong Kong or Beijing as an example. Look into the oral storytelling history of any nation on earth, and you'll find comedy that mirrors the US comedy culture. Colonization and imperialism have wiped out and replaced much of those cultures, which is why music, art and comedy are more or less becoming homogenous today. Why? Because it makes the most profit. The internet has centralized most industries in developed countries, so the only way to survive in the entertainment industry is to conform to their standards.
@@somekid7 o
0:29 he gets a standing ovation for saying no u
Hahaha
@@Alex-yq8mx But is is just "no u". "Who are you guys" "Haha, but who are you?" The only thing that made it funny was the set-up leading the audience to believe that Shandling was going to ask a serious question. Classic bait and switch.
There's a lot at play that makes it better than merely a "no you" joke, seeing as Bo Burnham himself bursts out in laughter, slaps his knee, rocks forward out of his chair, hits his knee a couple of more times, and then later claps.
The timing and pacing of his words and the way he intonates "mutual", along with his body language, made it feel like another word should follow directly after and that he was going to keep talking and say something different, but then it's not until he immediately stops talking that you realize he had already made the whole joke and the punchline sneaked up on you.
Part of what makes it funny is that it's an obvious rebuttal - "Who are you?" because to millennials they're old and no longer relevant versus "Who are you?" because to baby boomers, and a lot of other people, you're young and unknown - told in a creative and surprising way. What's impressive is that he said it in so few words, the key word being "mutual" which is nearly the exact right word to frame the joke properly and the joke mostly still works if he had used only that one way. The fact that he's able to take Bo Burnham's entire setup and punchline and basically reframe it within a new context with slightly varied implications back at him within almost one word, "mutual", is what makes it funny.
It's 20% what you say and 80% how you say it.
In EVERYTHING in life, especially comedy.
Trouble Breathing yeah honestly he seems a bit toxic
This was largely the Bo Burnham and Garry Shandling show. Shandling was a funny funny man.
It's amazing how enamored these guys are with him. It wasn't in here but Rays face when Bo performs "Art is Dead" is total amazement and this look of pride that I've only seen in old Wrestlers watching younger guys putting a great show and saying "The industry is in good hands here.".
I hope to see Bo do more stand up in the future, he left stand up in such a beautiful way but it seemed way before he had even approached his peak.

Holy shit, this is amazing. Bo can really hold his own with these guys, and hearing him and Shandling wax poetic on comedy was super interesting. Thanks for uploading.
...I'm gonna be the first to say it: these guys aren't nearly.... NEARLY as fuckin funny or talented as Bo. They're just sanctimonious pricks that he's smart enough to outwit even with this fake ass handicap. Before now I would never have said "that comic from everybody loves Raymond is a TOP comedian". Same with everyone else in that fuckin room. Bo is a top comedian. This shit is just forced perspective.
Wayne McIntosh bro these guys are comedy veterans I don't know what you're on about. Bo is a smart and witty, but pitting these guys under him is a bit of an overstatement
You going to be angry at Don Rickles next for not being as funny as Danny Glover?
Bo could be their kid, age wise.
These are people whove been grinding comedy for 4 or more decades, and here Shandling was at the end of his life and he knew it so it was interesting to see how he had come to cope with the circumstances of his health.
Also Raymond had the top watched show on tv for years. It was near Seinfeld levels. I used to hate that show.. then i hit my late 20s.. and i really connected..
You're obviously a fucking idiot then. lmao.

It's always hard to gauge time with Bo. He's looked the same since he was 16.
+Piper
Because he's a time traveler, or vampire. Just look at his teeth and how white he is!
It's interesting to hear Bo talk about how he feels he has no problems back in 2011, but in Make Happy it's extremely clear he has a lot of anxiety and depression issues. One can only imagine how much that was eating away at him for years, and perhaps even at this point he might have been playing a character, but secretly terrified of everything.
If you've ever had depression and anxiety, the first thing you tell people is that you don't have any problems.
He would say in a later interview that one of the fallacies of mental illnesses like anxiety and depression is in thinking that it's part of your depth as a person instead of something that actively inhibits you. The crux of Inside is about this, but even if he didn't focus on that, there are so many songs which don't have that subject matter that I think he could have continued to ignore his anxiety problems as part of his art if he really wanted to.
He might not have known. Anxiety and depression just seem normal, because that's all you know. Until one day you realize it's not how everyone else feels.
I love how Marc Maron is just being Marc Maron at all times, regardless of context.

I could easily watch or listen to this as a weekly podcast. This group was an extremely valid and established group of comedians. They know the craft and are very insightful.
in retrospect Garry Shandling was incredibly insightful. when this was first out I thought he was kinda posturing as this enlightened eastern sage. over the years it's amazing to me how completely attuned he was to the realities of mental health, comedy, celebrity, social pressure, self awareness, authenticity... and completely right about Bo and how he'd develop.

The entire time I’m just looking at bo like what a fucking mastermind/cutie/genius/handsome man. He is just so unbelievably smart, and so educated about so many things and all of these men are honestly. You have to be, to be able to write well articulated jokes and be naturally funny to people and even yourself. You have to be able to joke with yourself in order to be able to genuinely take criticism. I am so fascinated with comedians and how they are able to be so hilarious, yet are able to take so many topics so seriously. I love that. I love comedy in general and the comedians that preform it. I have so much respect for the industry.

Comedians can’t stop doing fucking bits
André Crema this is strait up all for the audience. When there is absent of an audience there's still bits, but a lot less. You can see how close they get to that by listening to their podcasts.
André Crema one of my favorites, Pete Holmes, talks about philosophy with lots of comedians in his.

I just discovered him through his recent special and I don't regret a single second! So sympatical this guy❤️
I can see why he had panic attacks after becoming famous so fast and then just held up to old-school legends whether you like them or not. How do you at 20 continue to live up to this.
Bo years ago: talks about sock puppet, then later on talks about how nobody would want to hear how he thinks the world works

This is amazing for the simple fact that there is so much talent in that circle alone, let alone the room (these were all shot over a weekend at a comedy festival iirc), yet Bo Burnham is at least as if not more talented than anyone else there. He and Shandling are really on a level of their own and it’s amazing to see them spar with each other.

I first watched this a few years ago, had never heard of Garry Shandling and haven't come across him since. But he really seemed to be the most respected and kinda leader of this group of older comics. The whole conversation flowed through him. RIP big man
I could watch this stuff all day. The older guys trying to figure out and actually help the younger next generation. Some of these guys think they'll live forever and don't want to make room for the new guys coming up. I guess that goes with almost everything in life! This was really cool and funny!
RIP Garry Shandling. Guy was hilarious, a great comic.

I can't tell if Bo is being genuinely "one of them" or if he's playing along whilst subtly giving them shit. Eg. The white sock/black sock "joke"
Both. It's called banter.
I thought everyone did that? I'm blind in one eye, and my best friend gives me shit about it all the time, then I give him shit about being color blind. I wouldn't trust someone that didn't give me shit.
@@xXAkirhaXx Nah lmao. I prefer my social interactions to not involve bullying
@@DeathnoteBB How do you consider friendly banter bullying lol, have you never had friends who like joke around. Or are you too much of a snowflake to take a joke, get offended and shut other peoples ability to be themselves around you down.
@@DeathnoteBB sounds fuckin boring i’ll tell you that
I don't think anyone wants to sit and hear a 20 year old tell them how the world works. Fast forward to today's special.
Bruhh fr
Well he's 30 now 😂
to be fair, he is now a 30 year old telling us how the world works
@@wynnwizard that is fair, and it wasn't really him. It was a sock puppet.
@@ribuhman a sock puppet? I hope it was a white one
@@hcc942 it was
What a fantastic show this was. This needs to come back
2:25 to come up with a comeback like that, immediately on the spot, surrounded by professional comedians and crowd, on camera... I don't even nearly have comebacks like that in my head when I'm showering
4:15 very insightful; wonder if Shandling & him ever talked more later after this
This is as much a video about how incredible Shandling was as it is about Bo. I wish we'd got more of them in the same room before Shandling's passing. They really vibed.
Omg he used that concept in inside
Garry Shandling passed away over 18 months ago, and a lot of what he has to say here still rings true.
this feels like the first time i've seen bo genuinely laugh
This was the best episode of the series. So funny, and so enlightening.
Bless Bo for holding his own and damn near surpassing comedy legends. He's great.
