    Jose, what's the most pocketable flip phone capable of firing off T-Mobile's network available today? I'm looking for less bulk than any of the durables (Kyocera / Sonim) or even the latest installments from Alcatel and Nokia--when open those flippers are too long. Curious as to what you think is the best for calls primarily, but still capable of text (on T-Mobile). Thanks, your channels great!

    Which one allows you to see how many minutes or days you have left and when they need to be recharged? Which one allows you to remove most of the "apps" from the menu? I only need a phone I can make and receive calls with and see how many minutes I have left. I don't do text or browser or anything like that. I don't see a point for a camera if you are not really using it as a camera phone, in a zoom call for example.

      Dumb phones doing smart things is the biggest "fu" to society and $700+ phones lololol Kyocera DuraXV is now my current flip. It's as smart as can be. Wifi, Hotspot, Maps, Spotify, Zello, Instagram, Discord, casting to my Roku. Gameboy emulators are awesome cuz of the form factor and physical buttons. It's already been buried in the snow, dropped in a bucket of nasty fishtank water, closed in my car hood and finally left near a propane heater in a shack. Just minor scuffs and a rubber plug is a little melted. That's it. Way less anxiety with this or any other sub $75 device, than any expensive cyber phone. 🐨

    Hi Jose, does the Nokia 2760 have any stutter or delay issues? For example, my 2720 flip (running KaiOS 2.5.x) took a whopping 2 seconds to go from Home Screen to the App Drawer, where as my other Nokia, the 105 Plus without KaiOS, is so snappy and smooth I wonder why modern day smartphones aren't like this. I am really interested in the 2760 because of USB C and also it's nice red color, but I am afraid if there's any stutter or lag I might not buy it.

  • @LivermoreFilm
    @LivermoreFilm Před rokem +4

    Jose, I've been using the Nokia 2780 for a while, for the most part I'm "meh". kaiOS is still very laggy and slow. Often times the display time doesn't even match/catch up with the current time in the top left hand corner (so weird). Going through messages and message conversations seems like it exhausts kaiOS like i've just asked it to compute a interstellar mathematical equation. I stopped in T-Mobile today and they had a "TCL Flip GO". I decided to open and test it out, and it was LIGHTENING fast.
    I did a speed test against my 2780 just clicking on the camera Icon, and the TCL opened LIGHTSPEEDS faster. The official model number of this device is "4058W". Have you had a chance to get your hands on one of these? Is it the same as this unit you have in the video? What is the difference between TCL Flip Go vs TCL Flip Pro vs TCL Flip 2 ?

    • @CrossStix
      @CrossStix Před rokem +2

      Looking at FCC documents 4058W is indeed the T-Mobile variant of the TCL Flip 2. Hardware is identical. (Edit: it is however missing the emergency button)
      4058L = USCellular variant (TCL Flip Go)
      4058G = seems to be either Dish Wireless (Boost Mobile etc) and/or Factory Unlocked variant (TCL Go Flip 2)
      Two more AT&T compatible variants exist, but these have different LTE bands for full coverage AT&T support. E.g
      they support Band 14, where the other variants don't, but they also lack support for some Verizon and T-Mobile bands. Both are sold as the "TCL Classic".
      4058C = Cricket
      4058R = AT&T
      TCL Flip Pro is a completely different model (4056S) that runs KaiOS 3.0 with KaiVA (Voice Assistant).

    • @LivermoreFilm
      @LivermoreFilm Před rokem +1

      @@CrossStix Out of all of these models, would you suggest the TCL Flip Pro is the best offered? Even though it is KaiOS which i hate, i wonder if they have worked out the bugs to where it actually functions like it should?

    • @CrossStix
      @CrossStix Před rokem +2

      @@LivermoreFilmHopefully this reply doesn't get removed. For some reason my original reply seemed to be detected as spam.
      Anyway...the TCL Flip Pro still has the group texting issue AFAIK, unless a recent update that I'm unaware of fixed it. Not to mention KaiOS 3.x still having fewer apps available compared to 2.5, which seems like a step backward. IMHO KaiOS is basically dead at this point, sadly, as it seemed like it had potential.
      As to a firm recommendation, I'd have to know what carrier you plan to use, how much you're looking to spend, and/or how long you're willing to wait for an unlock, if so required. As I said before, all the 4058 models are essentially identical. The only difference should be minor carrier firmware tweaks and frequency band support. Oh, and the emergency button, some have it, some don't.
      That being said, I'd probably recommend the TCL Flip 2. It's the cheapest, most widely supported (at Apps4Flip) basic (but still hackable) AOSP (Android) flip now, and it should work on all U.S. carriers once unlocked (It just lacks AT&T band 14).
      If you need/want a voice assistant for voice to text etc., Apps4Flip has one available.
      Finally, if you want/need maximum AT&T coverage, I'd check out the AT&T TCL Classic. I imagine it's hackable, but I'd check Apps4Flip to be sure. It should also work on any AT&T MVNO (prepaid carrier) without being unlocked.

    Why are they so cheap in the US compared to Europe? It's also crazy how in Europe we basically don't have options when in the US there are so many different brands of quality dumb phones.

    • @granjmy
      @granjmy Před rokem

      It may be free market competition of the USA. Not sure. Fewer regulations? I don't know.

    • @CrossStix
      @CrossStix Před rokem +2

      In the U.S. they're willing to sell them at a loss (or at least close to it) while being carrier locked and subsidized (basically the razor and blades business model). While in Europe there tends to be more cell carriers and thus competition. So on average (AFAIK), cell prices are cheaper, but you often have to pay full price for phones. Presumably European cell carriers can't afford to subsidize them, with their already cheap service prices.
      I imagine in the long run Europeans actually pay less overall for their combined service and phone purchases.
      As to fewer dumb phones being offered in Europe, I'd actually argue it's the opposite. If you're only referring to 4G dumb phones though, then maybe. It comes down to the availability of 2G/3G in Europe.
      Excluding Switzerland (which still has 3G by the way), 2G (yes you read that right, 2G) is still available in literally every European country, with most planning to keep it active until around 2030.
      So Europeans have the "luxury" of still being able to use a plethora of 2G and 3G dumb phones if they so desire (including 20+ year old models, that may or may not be refurbished). Thus there isn't really a large market for 4G dumb phones there just yet.
      That being said, I know there are European 4G models not available in the U.S., e.g. the new Nokia 5710. Also keep in mind that in the U.S. a lot of flip phone "models" are just different carrier or unlocked variants of the same phone, so the "variety" may be misleading. On that note, modern Alcatel and TCL phones are from the same company, for example. I believe that type of rebranding and rebadging isn't as common in Europe.

    For flip phones they are awfully large. Might as well use a smart phone.

    It’s sad that Nokia are cheating out on the quality of plastic and kaios. Such good designs but terrible os

      It may get 2G, but we don't have any confirmation yet. I'd say yes, but haven't heard of anyone actually using it in India.

    I wish Nokia would stop pushing Kai OS. It's absolute trash. Wish Android would just produce a super dumbed down OS with only essentials.

      It is not good for most people. But for some it's the best they can get in their region. I can't avoid that reality. I don't recommend it myself when there are other options, but if that's the only option, there is nothing wrong with that.

    Nokia's sim trays are too flimsy on their dumb phones

    Do both phones allow Whatsapp and QR readers?

      TCL Flip 2 only. You have to customize it, but it is possible.
