IN FROM THE MARGINS: Azad Karim v/in MGLC

Azad Karim je bil rojen v Arbilu, v pokrajini Kurdistan v severnem delu Iraka. Po končani srednji šoli se je vpisal na Inštitut za likovno umetnost v Bagdadu. Uspešno ga je končal in kot eden najboljših študentov prejel nagrado inštituta. Nato se je odločil za študij v tujini in leta 1976 prišel v Slovenijo ter se vpisal na Akademijo za likovno umetnost v Ljubljani. Leta 1980 je diplomiral iz slikarstva, leta 1983 pa je končal še magistrski študij grafike. Veliko potuje po svetu in v muzejih proučuje artefakte, ki izhajajo z območja ob Evfratu in Tigrisu. V zadnjem desetletju se izraziteje ukvarja s problematiko begunstva, vojne in uničevanja artefaktov in osebnih spominov, povezanih z izkušnjo razseljenosti. Ta tematika že dlje odseva v njegovih slikarskih in grafičnih delih ter video- in instalacijskih postavitvah.

Azad Karim was born in Arbil, in the province of Kurdistan in northern Iraq. After completing his high school studies, he enrolled at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad. He graduated successfully and received the Institute award as one of the best students. He then decided to study abroad and came to Slovenia in 1976, where he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana. In 1980, he graduated in Painting, and in 1983, he obtained a master's degree in Printmaking. He travels extensively around the world to study artefacts from the Euphrates and Tigris regions in museums. Over the last decade, he has increasingly focused on the theme of refugees, war and the destruction of artefacts and personal memories related to the experience of displacement. This theme has long been reflected in his paintings and prints, as well as in his video and installation works.
