The loveliness of this video is that it isn't a CZcamsr production, but an honest photographer. I really appreciate the shot of the lens being put on the M6, you had great patience to add that in the way it is, and the sound of the click was superb.

Thank you for a wonderful review. I have the very rare German version of this lens I acquired in the mid 1990's. I have been a photographer for fifty years and NO other lens I have ever used delivers the pure magic of this lens. I regret now I am going to sell it because my family will have no idea what to do with it when I pass. The fact that my lens will now bring close to $5000. is not lost on me. If you can afford one you will be enchanted by every image you capture.

Steven, this is another wonderful video; I have watched it several times. This is surely a wonderful lens and you have made many wonderful images with it. I particularly love the image of the children at 1:50 - it's hauntingly beautiful. I think this lens and Kodak 5222 is an amazing combination. Thank you so much for your videos.

Dear Steven, watched this video many times. I have watched a lot of videos on Leica, and honestly this is a very beautiful one. I bought a this lens on ebay from Japan after watching your video. It is a very sharp lens even at f/1.4. At f/2, it is (or almost) as sharp as Summicron. Considering the small size and the quality of image it makes, it is an amazing lens even today. I am glad I bought a very nice one.
Your English is very good, very comfortable to listen to. Thanks!

Another great review Steven. You have a sensitivity for the subject - visual, tactile. It's very different to the "first impressions", and "one week with the..." type stuff out there. It's clear that what you are presenting in each video is real wisdom, and a focus on the points that actually matter. It's been a delight to discover your channel recently.

Thanks Mr Steven for making this video. I finally decided to buy this lens after watched your review and really satisfied with the lens. What you said about the lens in the review is very accurate. Compared this with 35mm ASPH FLE, Pre-A is easier to focus because the focus falloff is not as steep as ASPH FLE version. Pre-A have more DOF with same aperture compared to FLE. The Pre-A also have diffrent color balance. It is more towards green, while FLE more magenta and overall warmer than pre-A.
I also wanna add little trick about series 7 filter. Because no one sells this kind of filter anymore in my country, I end up with purchasing B+W 49mm non slim (F-Pro) version, put it on reverse position and use 15cm 24 awg wire as a shim. Without the shim, it will rattle. If the filter not reversed, the hood will not fully screw.

I am in 100% agreement with your assessment of the pre-asph Summilux 35mm lens. I do not know why but this lens was not nearly as popular as the Summicron when it was being manufactured. I bought one a very long time ago ('80's) used when I bought my M4. I always loved it and thought it was nearly the perfect lens in that it was many lenses in one very small package as it looked completely different at various apertures.
In the '90's I purchased a then brand new 35mm Summicron ASPH when it was first released as I thought I wanted "perfect sharpness across the field". I soon found out that that was not at all what I wanted. The pre-asph Summilux 35mm lenses are not easy to find as I don't know how many were made but my feeling is not very many.
I still have that lens, I sold my 35mm Summicron ASPH a few years ago as I realized I never used it. I also decided to have it serviced as it was very old and never had been serviced. While it was being serviced I purchased a Voigtlander 35mm f 1.4 Nokton MC (multi-coated). Much to my surprise the Voigt 35mm was as far as I could tell almost a clone of the Summilux. The size and the handling was very similar. Even more surprising was that the two lenses behave very similarly in terms of rendering. The same goes for the version 2 of the Voigtlander. I will not say they are identical but who is to say that there is not sample variations in both the old Leica and the new Voigt? If anything I think both of the Voigt 35mm 1.4 lenses that I have are what would happen if Leica had continue to manufacture the old Summilux with minor coating and optical fine tuning improvements along the way. In some ways the Voigt is a slightly "better" lens with a very similar optical signature.

This lens has a design very close to a Summicron. It has two distinct characters. Wide open, it is under corrected, yet produces glowy and dreamy images with that famous bokeh. From F2 or thereabouts it performs like a Summicron. Sharp and contrasty. Pre digital Leica lenses have all their own character, yet they all seem to exhibit what has come to be known as the Leica look. For digital, the requirement of the lens design are quite different. I am sad to say that most top class lenses designed for digital have the same look, regardless of being a Leica or of Chinese origin.
