Hello world.
Jeremy here, a film photographer living in Singapore. Leica just announced the re-release of the iconic 35mm Summilux 35mm f/1.4 V1 "Steel Rim" lens.
Here's a film review of the original, self proclaimed 'True King of Bokeh' and father to the Leica 35mm V4 summicron...
It's the vintage 35mm V2 PRE-ASPH summilux, one of my most used lenses, especially with film photographs, and the primary lens that has been glued to my black paint Leica MP for the past year.
In this video, you’ll find many sample pictures. All the black and white photographs featured in this video were shot on Ilford HP5 pushed 2 stops, developed in Ilfotec HC on a rotary processor. The color (C41 and ECN 2) photographs were shot on either Kodak Vision3 250D, 500T, Gold or Ultramax.
If you love analog, film photography too, join me here on this channel!
Peace,
Jeremy-T aka JeremyT aka JeremyTphotography
Your images are beautiful! You deserve way more attention on this platform!
Thank you for your kind words! 😊
+1
Great video.
Do you have IG?
Thank you very much Callum! I'm actually very new to social media, so for now I'm only on youtube.. haha!
Finally someone did a good video on my favorite lens! Awesome photos btw
You love this lens too? That's so awesome!
Great video!! I look forward to watching more from you!
Thank you! :)
Excellent review! Subscribed! Thank you for the work put into this.
Thank you Tim!
Nice review of the 35 Pre-asph, and I appreciate that you highlighted all of the positives as well as the negative (lens hood getting in the way of the aperture) that most(all) other reviews neglect to mention. I have a v1 transition Pre-asph and love the lens on digital.
Thanks! Man thats a rare lens.. I haven't quite explored this lens on a digital camera yet. Glad to know its loved there too!
really enjoyed your perspective here! hope to see more videos in the future
Thanks a lot Ryan!
Great review! I really like how you pointed out how you make it work to tailor your artistic sensibility. The photos look great too. Success with the channel!
Thank you very much! :)
Thanks for this! Your vocabulary on these ideas of describing a look is helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Nice overview of one of my favorite Leica lenses. In the early 1970s when I got my first example - and before the ‘art’ or bokeh became popular - I got the Summilux over the newest 35 Summicron because it had the light gathering of an f1.4 and wide that with film made those low light photographs possible (in photo journalism) even if the results were not that ‘good’ sometimes compared to the lens stopped down. But stopped down it was comparable to the Summicron and sharpened up and increased contrast nicely. In the past 20+ years the 35 Summilux pre-ASPH has become a different lens in use for me, much like you mention. I call it my ‘two lenses in one’ lens, because it can have such different renditions depending on the aperture and ‘art’ effect or more well corrected at f4-f8. It can do some amazing things (sometimes unpredictably) that make it such a fun lens to use, full of character when opened up with ‘soft-sharpness’ and a glow in certain conditions. On my Leica SL it is a blast to use, retains all the quirks and with the finder I can get a better idea what the lens is doing.
Thanks for taking the time to write this! That’s amazing to know.. That this lens is still special to you despite so many years going by.. I’ve yet to explore it on the SL.. One day!
Fantastic review, thanks for sharing!
Thank you 🙂
Very helpful examples and reviews.
Thanks :)
I just bought a mint copy made in Germany and HP5 and Tri-X for my MP, let’s go 😍
Lets goooooo!
your photos look quite interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you :)
This is a great take!
Thanks Gerardo!
hey Jeremy, absolutely fantastic video and images. were the pre-asph sample images in this video shot with or without the lens hood? I'm contemplating picking up a voigtlander 35mm 1.4 Nokton classic which is a similar design, but not sure I want to plunk down another $70 for a hood.
The pictures here all had the hood on! Without the hood the flaring would have been even more out of control.. I've used the voigtlander nokton, the flare there is really nice actually, it doesn't wash the picture out as much as the summilux, but without the hood it will flare quite a bit too!
@@jeremy-t fantastic. thanks for your reply. more videos please. these are some of the best I've ever seen. I have zero doubt this will be a successful channel. really good job.
You know you hear CZcamsrs talk about how “support” means a lot to them, but here I am, out for my usual walk at 10pm, after a long day, and reading your kind words has made a difference to my evening. Thank you Craig!
thanks for the great vid with examples. can you review your jobo rotary device? looks stout!
Thank you very much! Its actually not a Jobo, but a much more affordable option. Check out the link in the description!
Great review, very interesting thoughts! This lens is glued to my M6, I use it mostly for color film though. It's so light and perfect for travel! On digital I don't like it as much, the 35 FLE I think pairs better, although a bit heavy. But that's just personal preference I guess :)
Awesome! Where do you post your pictures? I'd love to see your shots on color film!
@@jeremy-t most are personal so i don't post them on my site but i'm working on a series for an exhibition which will be on my website. Do you have instagram? I would love to follow you!
I love my Titanium version. Thank you very much!
Thats awesome! Is the titanium one made of brass?
@@jeremy-t Yes, it is!
So cool video!! Thanks! Whitch filter you use?
Thank you! Just a regular UV.. Mainly to protect the soft coatings of this older lens from all the dirt and muck my camera is usually covered in 😅
@@jeremy-t thanks! I have the lens to:) i love it:) can you tell me the exact name of the filter? I've been looking for the right one for so long. either they are too fat, or the size doesn't exist😅 thanks a lot! greetings from switzerland😁
Hello from Singapore! Sure thing! It’s the B+W 49 UV XS pro. With your current filter, you also can try putting it into the hood backwards/reversed, times that does the trick and it allows a thicker filter to fit inside!
Similarly, I loved this lens for more than a decade, for all the reasons you describe, and like you I kept it on my M6 most of the time. I sold it because of the surprise arcs of light that ruined some important images. Frankly, I miss it but no, I would not get one again.
Wow over a decade! That’s awesome! Yeah those surprise arcs can get in the way..
Hi! Does your framelines move when you focus? Mine is stuck. Please advise. Thanks!
Yes it should!
Thanks Jeremy.
Is the situation with the filters carried over to the 2022 version? Whilst most others are excited about the new M6, the reissue of the Summilux 35 f1.4 is of greater interest to me. I already own the first M version of Summicron 35mm with goggles for the M3, but need a 35mm for the other M bodies. ♡
Nice video. 👌
Cheers, Kevin.
Hey Kevin, man that's an awesome lens! The newest reissue actually fixed the hood problem. They gave it a filter thread and a new hood! I can feel my wallet trembling...
@@jeremy-t Good news about the filter thread. Great! ... and..
🤣.. There has long been the expression: "The mind boggles" .. for instances of disbelief. Now we should officially add your "The wallet trembles."
I love it.. Thank you. 😊
One of the down sides is the minimum focus distance of 1m vs 0.7m on the Summicrons.
Ahh.. yes you're right!
The minimum focus is actually 0.9m.
@@godscola Good to know!
You’re definitely crazy, but in the best possible way. Thank you for sharing.
Hahaha! Thank you!
👌💯👌
Thank you!
Excellent presentation, however, you did not mention anything about this lens with digital use. Would have been interesting to have some input.
Thank you! I’ll keep that in mind for future videos :)
I own both the v.4 Summicron and this v.2 Summilux in titanium. I do not use film anymore, so it is used on my M9 and SL2. Any comments on digital images?
Hey Wilfred! I've used it on the m9 and was pretty happy with the results.. I don't have a SL... (Yet?) haha! How it stand up to the resolution of the sl2? Have you been liking it so far?
Actually I prefer the Summicron v.4 over this Summilux v.2 at f/2.0. However, it is still a fun lens when looking for special effects at f/1.4.Of course , images from these two older lenses are not clinically sharp compared to those APO lenses, even when mounted on a SL2. There are occasions I found softer images are more pleasing for color photography.
That's cool!
It is me again. Recently I bought the Voigtlander Helier Classic 50 mm f/1.5 SC, also a character lens with similar characteristics. I like it a lot on my M9. Check it out if you get the chance.
wow nice! thanks for letting me know, I’ll check it out!
have this baby too :-) agree on all the above
Yes!!!!
I left my M6 and 35mm F2 at my Shanghai home. After looking your video I am missing them so much 😂
Haha! I know the feeling! 😬
Please the review the upcoming new voigtlander 35mm F1.4
I'll try to get my hands on one...
There's a look Leica gives. You'll all know what I mean.
Which Leica lens is best for this classic Leica rendering?
My budget never strayed beyond Carl Zeiss.
Man.. Zeiss M mount glass holds its own! Especially that beautiful F1.5 sonnar..
@@jeremy-t I have my poor man's Leica. An A7RIII with adapted Zeiss Distagon 2/35 ZK from my Pentax days. Also the Distagon 2.8/21 and Planar 1.4/85.
I would love a Leica lens, even if it's a Leica-R 2/35 and/or (meaning and) a 2/50.
I make do with a Tomioka (TomiLux 🤣) Cosina 1.2/55.
Wow! Those are amazing lenses.. I’ve never used a Distagon I didn’t like..Leica R glass is awesome! But also don’t be surprised if you eventually get that R glass, but still miss your Zeiss 😌 I’ve felt that before!
@@jeremy-t Thank you for just saving me a bunch! Yep, Zeiss nails it. I just sold 24 lenses including the three Pentax FA Limiteds, 31, 43 and 77 and a few D-FA*'s.
Out of everything, Zeiss was head and shoulders above the rest.
I have to be that guy- could anyone shed some light on what a good price would be for this lens ? A seller has a really beat up copy with no functional damage and he's asking $2,000. It that too much in 2023 ?
Seems about right! Depends on how beat up it is, where I am mint ones go from anywhere between $2500-$3500 USD! Do double check ebay, KEH and Kamerastore!
