You can do the first few of the Hamish missions with Arthur and save the last one for John. Hamish and John will talk about Arthur, bringing them both memories, and then taking Buell would feel more meaningful.

When John continues the mission, the wooden guy *who might you be?* And john introduced himself and tells the Wooden Guy that Arthur was his friend. Then the wooden guy offered him a coffee and spent a few hours introducing themselves. John mision during thst time was to hunt the Black Wolf. Once done, John slept for 24hours (to get the new mission) and finished it off with then Monstrous Boar quest.

Theres a glitch wherein you ram into Buell with your horse which actually causes Buell to unhitch, then he will proceed to run away, then once he starts running away you can jump on to him (make sure that you dont get off him because he will glitch out) Then return him to camp, then hitch him, then save and reload, then put your saddle on him. Thats the glitch im talking about. Not the Saint Denis one.
Personally, I took Buell as Arthur . It felt like Arthur enjoyed a horse so much since Boadicea. When you bond with Buell he will say his name and I love that part. So I have no regret giving Arthur Buell. Long live Arthur and Buell-1899
I also had Buell right at the end of Chapter 6 and that scene where Arthur said thank you made it even more meaningful when it was Buell and not just a non-unique horse that I could find again in the wild or at stables.
@@G1NZOU I used the Raven Black shire which Arthur gets in the beginning when he goes hunting with Hosea.It seemed fitting as Arthur turns into a work horse in the end like the shire.
I adore collecting horses and I wish you got some extra stable slots, even if it's just limited to the epilogue (since John now has a ranch with room for horses and a barn). 4 horses isn't enough and I wish it was at least 6, maybe 8-10, even if they made it an extra purchasable upgrade at stables for a lot of money I'd gladly spend a lot of time in game to work towards it.
I'm coping this time by doing two playthroughs at the same time with different horses on each, one high honour with a Silver Dapple Pinto as his main horse, and the other low honour with a Blood Bay Thoroughbred as his main horse.
I got the Perlino Andalusian for Arthur until the end. Then I went back to its spawn location as John and there it was, still! I like to think that Arthur's horse survived and now it's John's

my white arabian was a she and I named her Sansa. Like the QUEEN IN THE NORTH in Game of Thrones. Winter has come and stuff. Bucked me off in the first gun fight and died. Never got the nerves to go get another arabian.
Just picked up Buell from Hamish playing as John, looking forward to getting up to level 4 bonding with him. Also on my equine shopping list is a strawberry roan Ardennes and Tiger striped bay Mustang which I'll let my niece and nephew name.

losing a horse is hard, it stays with me for days. i am constantly saving my game/progress, basically every day so i can avoid situations like this one. that way you can reload, lose some progress, but keep the horse. thanks for watching, friend!

In one of my playthroughs I got the Silver Dapple Pinto MF for Arthur through the Biscuit glitch, but she wasn't Arthur's main horse in the final Chapter, so she survived the final mission, so when I got to the epilogue, John bought Arthur's former horse, even gave her the same name and it felt so canon, since you can buy Hosea and Sean's horses in the epilogue too. I actually wish you could re-buy the horses you had as Arthur, including the raven black shire, I moss that horse 😭
The perlino andulasion is available with Arthur, the place where it spawns is also a spawn place for camps too, so sometimes you need to wait an in-game day or two.
superantonio I always love how John is always very open about expressing his love for his horses, but with people he’s a little more awkward. Like he calls his male horses his “son”, and says to both “you know I love you” and “you know I love you, lady”, but with Jack he was like, “I’m really not good at this, at talking” when he went fishing.
i like having buell as my endgame horse, as much as i'd love to keep him for john i feel like buell deserves to be by arthur's side as he dies... even if that means he has to aswell
Wish I kept buell. I didn't know that you could keep him as your own horse, so when hamish said take him I took him and hitched him back at hamish's house :(
I'm convinced Andalusians have the highest courage stat in the game. I went hunting for bears with the Perlino one you found in the wild and I managed to make it go literally right next to a charging bear and it still didn't buck me off. I just caught the Tiger Striped Bay Mustang and hopefully he'll be just as courageous.
Took your advice and went for Buell. I was not disappointed. Completed horseman 9 with Buell without taking any horse stimulant at all. Thank you for the video.
Great list! For me it’s always gotta be Rachel or Buell for John. Big and powerful like Old Boy. Though I do think he looks more at home on the smaller horses than big ol’ Arthur does.
Regarding The Veteran,you can start the mission with Arthur..just remember to finish it with John.The most important thing is to remember to put Buell in the stable if you are going to rescue,steal or break extra horses in the epilogue...
You had to know you would hear from me when it came to picking Buell over the silver dappled pinto Missouri Fox Trotter. Buell, you bucked your previous master off at least twice and the second time it was to his death. He was becoming my friend. You're pretty and big and fast, but can I trust you? Hmmm?
I've basically being going trough different horses now, my favorite so far was my Dutch Warmblood that i got as Arthur, Old Boss, dark brown color with lighter tones of brown on top that looked magnificent when wet, he never bucked me off, not even when facing a cougar (only horse so far to not do it), sadly lost him to the last Penelope Braithwaite mission bug and couldn't revive so i just ran to Strawberry stables and got me a brown Appaloosa i think it was. Second favorite and the favorite of John's horses was a Hungarian Half-bred, Siege. One of the best mannered horses out of the ones i had with John and least scared of predators. Also got me the white Arabian from the Lake Elizabeth. Quick Google search claimed that she is the best one but the fact that her stats are only 8 on 8 on bonding four tells me that was a lie. The Tumbleweed American Paint and the one that has a hair that looks like pancake, kinda white with golden brown in the mix were also quite nice, far better than i anticipated
My horses for Arthur were: the original tenessee walker he gets a hungarian halfblood (dark brown) called pea the black and white tobiano called moo :)
I sold Rachel at the first opportunity I got. By then I'd gone to get Buell, who I'd left for John after doing most of the veteran's missions with Arthur. Of all the horses Arthur had (and he had many) the one I miss most is the gold Turkoman, so will undoubtedly get either that one again or the silver one for John.
My favourite is the Nokota from St Dennis, arguably the fastest horse and once you bond to level 4 he has great health and stamina, also have race horse handling
I tooo Buel as John in the epilogue. I only had him for 10 mins and then I wanted to start a mission. The cutscene played and the guy left with a train. After that Buel was nowhere to be found. It was very sad for me, even more because I have a feeling that he was hit by that train in the cutscene. Rip Buel and Hamish. See you in another playthrough.
The Dutch Warmblood seal brown, it has been Arthur’s horse from almost the start. I stole it from a lawman, and I have been very happy with him. I believe I’ll get one for John this play through. Thanks for the great video.
#MissouriFoxTrotter is clearly the best horse in RDR2. For RDO it's the #NorfolkRoadster. You can get the MFT after a few Ch.2 missions to get the stables, then need some skill to get it during the photography side story near Emerald Ranch, and it's the best till the end.
The Turkoman was my favourite during the John mission. When I played again there is apparently a glitch that you could get the dark bay turkoman for Arthur, but by the time I'd got there I'd already done the update where they fixed it. Still managed to steal Arthur a Turkoman though during chapter 3.
@@kristenalexandra2701 I started again about a month ago, playing here and there and I got it from the Braithwaite heist. The patch was fixed for a house outside of St. Denis, so I think you can still get him from the horse theft mission.

I was getting chased by the law and didn’t want to lose any money to bounty and I committed suicide via explosion and what will you know buelll was right next to me… it still hurts
The andalusian perlino coat is available since chapter 2, at least for many years now, near the waterfall were Arthur finds and helps the healthy recently widowed women (Charlotte). There's tons of later videos on how to get it here on YT as one of your first and also one of the best starting horses. I really love that horse. But as mentioned is available to Arthur, if not forever at least for years now, during chapter II. Favorite 5 horses for John, as of my choice: 5- Black Overo, 4- Rachel, ofc, 3- Silver or Blackwater Turkoman (my prefered breed horses overall), 2- Arabian Rose Bay, 1- Missouri Fox Trotter Silver Dapple Pinto (said to be the horse with the best stats of the game, not including just the ones "shown" by the game but also the perceived or "hidden" ones). I also like many others (Splashed white American Paint, ofc Buell that you can get with John if you finish the Hamish set of missions latter - at least the last one with the gigantic boar, Andalusian Perlino coat, Hungarian Half breed, any Turkoman - they're brave as heck, Black Arabian - the red chestnut and the warped brindle arabian are cool, but for arabian an the moments you can use then in the game I'd stick whit the white, black and the rose gray coats without hesitating -, Grey and tiger Stripe Mustangs, the raven coat Shire - maybe the bravest horse in game but the other stats..., also have a soft spot for some Appaloosa, they're reliable and easy to ride, and those I top 5 - I would had the white arabian for the game start for speed and some fun; so not a fan of Thoroubreds - guess it's personal, nor Nokotas, they're afraid of even spiders at bonding level 4, and Morgans can't even be considered horses in this game) but the game has now 5 to 6 years and the stables still locked at four simultaneous horses. At least the modding community could have "fixed" that, but it must be extremely difficult. Great video, it's very hard to choose the best horses, both during the main story and also during the epilogue. Thanks for it and congrats. Still very accurate and informative after the 4 years it's been posted.
Unpopular opinion, but I think Rachel is the prettiest horse in the game, I love the overall size and shape of thoroughbreds more than any other horse breed's, the turkomans for example, those look almost skeletonish to me with their short torso, too big of a head and freakishly long legs lol. Plus I just love the sealbrown color with the white markings, and I prefer darker horses in general instead of the lighter ones like the white arabian, Buell or the fox trotters. I also think both Arthur and John would prefer less flashy horses if that makes sense - so no arabians, turks, fox trotters and no 'extra' colorings - because in their situation I think they would like to blend in, not stand out. But that's just my imagination and how I like to play as them. :)
I know it'll never happen, but if I could get Rockstar to add any horse into the story mode it'd be a Missouri Foxtrotter with the same dark bay coat as a Turkoman, however it'd have the white splashes on the nose you see on the silver bay Saddler
The silver turkoman does have good stats but mine freaks out and cries like a schoolgirl and then bolts when a snake is near, for ages after seeing it and even when it’s dead. Same with any source of fire however small.
Buell is best for Arthur in my opinion, him being a "brute" makes the 2 almost made for each other, and makes his horse's death more meaningful. For John, i would go with the Dark Bait. It's fast, strong, not as skiddish as an Arabian, and the coat clashes well with John.
i got buel like two missions before the last arthur mission and managed to quick bond with him and when the cutscene where the horse has to die, that was the first time the game in all my 3 playthroughs made me shed a tear, i didnt cry, i shed a tear it brought me great pain to know i essentially caused that good horse to get executed by my haste to have him. taught me a lesson on patience and controlling greed
Yea so my favorite horse is buell because of the mission with hamish and he's just a good horse and I had him fully bonded with John... During a random shootout near rhodes a train came by and instantly killed buell... Couldn't even revive instantly dead
For Rachel, my Rachel died due to bounty hunters. so I got Buell and will never regret my decision, best horse in the game indeed. But for my stable, I’m definitely picking up the grey overo paint, silver turkoman and silver dapple pinto MFT.

Am I the only one who has difficulty forgiving Buell for killing Hamish? I mean he tried at least twice to toss the old man on something that would kill him. First a rattlesnake and then a giant boar. Who knows what dark plans are lurking behind those eyes.
I regrettably sold Buell and Rachel to make space in my bloody stables. Since I’ve sold them, does that mean there’s no way I can get them back? Having limited space in the stable is very harsh

I once met that Perlino Andalusian, and decided to tame it. I lassoed it and after I dismounted; my horse; Buell decided it would be a great idea to somehow fall off a cliff and require a revival all the way down there. Had to abandon the andalusion to save Buell and haven't encountered the andalusian since.
something else I've done on my current playthrough is stole that girl who asks to race you thoroughbred, it's really good, 9 or 10 speed and 7 acceleration. It's coat says brindle but to me it looks almost like a zebra, I love this horse, I just lassoed her then went and hopped on her horse, as Arthur though, not sure if she appears for John...probably as long as you ignore her as Arthur.
I've done at least 3 playthroughs and I stupidly sold Buell for all of them😐, I just finished my 4th one in the Epilogue, So I decided to start it and this time I won't sell him
I use buell bc hes a good horse and the coat of him is literally just awesome, and the saddle I have crafted goes along with him so well and I use him also to commemorate hamish, I’m john so thankfully hes permanent
I have a 4 horse Buell Rachel Hard-White Arabian horse(i named her hard cause its Hard to find her) Impossible-MFT(She wasnt available when i finished the game on Any stable i got her on wild its quite imposibble to find her Alive cause i always saw her dead)

Buell is my favourite too, especially if it rains/is sunny and his flank goes all shiny. I really wish that Arthur's horses could have maybe at least been put in some new state in new austin. Like maybe when you play as John there's an obscure stable and you see it has all of Arthur's previous horses in there and you could buy then- but the bonding might reset as you'd be a new owner. Gah.
My 4 horses are the perlino Andalusian the tiger striped mustang the grullo dun mustang and Buell love the mustangs and they are free they fit john perfectly

Actually I don't kniw but when I go to annesburg and I called my horse my Rachel automatically died
I accidentally killed my buell the minute I got him. I tried reloading but he was gone! And I did not even ride him one minute T.T
that's tough! but that's also what 2nd playthroughs are for...
Things like that is why I turned off auto-save, and save frequently.
Buell survived a crippled veteran for God knows how many years, and it couldn't survive you for a minute.
Emotional fact: O’Creagh was the name of the voice actor that did Uncle I think. And he died sadly.

Buell for John. I also keep Rachel too even after I get Buell.

I'm convinced Andalusians have the highest courage stat in the game. I went hunting for bears with the Perlino one you found in the wild and I managed to make it go literally right next to a charging bear and it still didn't buck me off. I just caught the Tiger Striped Bay Mustang and hopefully he'll be just as courageous.

Great list! For me it’s always gotta be Rachel or Buell for John. Big and powerful like Old Boy.
Though I do think he looks more at home on the smaller horses than big ol’ Arthur does.
glad you kept rachel, and john does seem shorter than arthur so proportionally i noticed he does look better on mustangs.
John is listed as 6 ft in game, not exactly short.

Regarding The Veteran,you can start the mission with Arthur..just remember to finish it with John.The most important thing is to remember to put Buell in the stable if you are going to rescue,steal or break extra horses in the epilogue...
best of both worlds with that scenario, and also extra dialogue for john.
You had to know you would hear from me when it came to picking Buell over the silver dappled pinto Missouri Fox Trotter. Buell, you bucked your previous master off at least twice and the second time it was to his death. He was becoming my friend. You're pretty and big and fast, but can I trust you? Hmmm?

I had a Nokota called Shadow when i was playing as Arthur. Best Horse I ever had in every way and when she died I actually cried I was so sad

The mission when you get Beul from Hamish I save it for John as well but I do the first few with Arthur.

I've basically being going trough different horses now, my favorite so far was my Dutch Warmblood that i got as Arthur, Old Boss, dark brown color with lighter tones of brown on top that looked magnificent when wet, he never bucked me off, not even when facing a cougar (only horse so far to not do it), sadly lost him to the last Penelope Braithwaite mission bug and couldn't revive so i just ran to Strawberry stables and got me a brown Appaloosa i think it was. Second favorite and the favorite of John's horses was a Hungarian Half-bred, Siege. One of the best mannered horses out of the ones i had with John and least scared of predators. Also got me the white Arabian from the Lake Elizabeth. Quick Google search claimed that she is the best one but the fact that her stats are only 8 on 8 on bonding four tells me that was a lie. The Tumbleweed American Paint and the one that has a hair that looks like pancake, kinda white with golden brown in the mix were also quite nice, far better than i anticipated

a hungarian halfblood (dark brown) called pea
the black and white tobiano called moo :)
I sold Rachel at the first opportunity I got. By then I'd gone to get Buell, who I'd left for John after doing most of the veteran's missions with Arthur. Of all the horses Arthur had (and he had many) the one I miss most is the gold Turkoman, so will undoubtedly get either that one again or the silver one for John.
My favourite is the Nokota from St Dennis, arguably the fastest horse and once you bond to level 4 he has great health and stamina, also have race horse handling
I tooo Buel as John in the epilogue. I only had him for 10 mins and then I wanted to start a mission. The cutscene played and the guy left with a train. After that Buel was nowhere to be found. It was very sad
for me, even more because I have a feeling that he was hit by that train in the cutscene. Rip Buel and Hamish. See you in another playthrough.
The Dutch Warmblood seal brown, it has been Arthur’s horse from almost the start. I stole it from a lawman, and I have been very happy with him. I believe I’ll get one for John this play through. Thanks for the great video.
I use: the persino Andalusian, Buell, the silver dapple Missouri Fox Trotter and the Tiger striped mustang :)
The second I got on Buell at the end of the quest, I ran into a tree by accident and he died instantly😐
#MissouriFoxTrotter is clearly the best horse in RDR2. For RDO it's the #NorfolkRoadster. You can get the MFT after a few Ch.2 missions to get the stables, then need some skill to get it during the photography side story near Emerald Ranch, and it's the best till the end.
The Turkoman was my favourite during the John mission. When I played again there is apparently a glitch that you could get the dark bay turkoman for Arthur, but by the time I'd got there I'd already done the update where they fixed it. Still managed to steal Arthur a Turkoman though during chapter 3.
Are you sure? I was just going to try to get the dark bay from the braithwaites in that one mission in chapter 3, but I’ll be sad if it got patched :(
@@kristenalexandra2701 I started again about a month ago, playing here and there and I got it from the Braithwaite heist. The patch was fixed for a house outside of St. Denis, so I think you can still get him from the horse theft mission.

You can still get the Dark Bay for Arthur...just stand next to it and give it sugar cubes till it bonds...using the item wheel this was done Feb 2022.

I was getting chased by the law and didn’t want to lose any money to bounty and I committed suicide via explosion and what will you know buelll was right next to me… it still hurts

The andalusian perlino coat is available since chapter 2, at least for many years now, near the waterfall were Arthur finds and helps the healthy recently widowed women (Charlotte). There's tons of later videos on how to get it here on YT as one of your first and also one of the best starting horses. I really love that horse. But as mentioned is available to Arthur, if not forever at least for years now, during chapter II. Favorite 5 horses for John, as of my choice: 5- Black Overo, 4- Rachel, ofc, 3- Silver or Blackwater Turkoman (my prefered breed horses overall), 2- Arabian Rose Bay, 1- Missouri Fox Trotter Silver Dapple Pinto (said to be the horse with the best stats of the game, not including just the ones "shown" by the game but also the perceived or "hidden" ones). I also like many others (Splashed white American Paint, ofc Buell that you can get with John if you finish the Hamish set of missions latter - at least the last one with the gigantic boar, Andalusian Perlino coat, Hungarian Half breed, any Turkoman - they're brave as heck, Black Arabian - the red chestnut and the warped brindle arabian are cool, but for arabian an the moments you can use then in the game I'd stick whit the white, black and the rose gray coats without hesitating -, Grey and tiger Stripe Mustangs, the raven coat Shire - maybe the bravest horse in game but the other stats..., also have a soft spot for some Appaloosa, they're reliable and easy to ride, and those I top 5 - I would had the white arabian for the game start for speed and some fun; so not a fan of Thoroubreds - guess it's personal, nor Nokotas, they're afraid of even spiders at bonding level 4, and Morgans can't even be considered horses in this game) but the game has now 5 to 6 years and the stables still locked at four simultaneous horses. At least the modding community could have "fixed" that, but it must be extremely difficult. Great video, it's very hard to choose the best horses, both during the main story and also during the epilogue. Thanks for it and congrats. Still very accurate and informative after the 4 years it's been posted.
Unpopular opinion, but I think Rachel is the prettiest horse in the game, I love the overall size and shape of thoroughbreds more than any other horse breed's, the turkomans for example, those look almost skeletonish to me with their short torso, too big of a head and freakishly long legs lol.
Plus I just love the sealbrown color with the white markings, and I prefer darker horses in general instead of the lighter ones like the white arabian, Buell or the fox trotters.
I also think both Arthur and John would prefer less flashy horses if that makes sense - so no arabians, turks, fox trotters and no 'extra' colorings - because in their situation I think they would like to blend in, not stand out. But that's just my imagination and how I like to play as them. :)

I like using Buell as Arthur's end-game horse, but I would never play an entire game with him. It reminds me too much of Dutch's horse. :/

The Dark Bay Turkoman is the closest horse to the Red Dead 1 canon war horse, but also Buell and the MFT are great options
I know it'll never happen, but if I could get Rockstar to add any horse into the story mode it'd be a Missouri Foxtrotter with the same dark bay coat as a Turkoman, however it'd have the white splashes on the nose you see on the silver bay Saddler
The silver turkoman does have good stats but mine freaks out and cries like a schoolgirl and then bolts when a snake is near, for ages after seeing it and even when it’s dead. Same with any source of fire however small.
Buell is best for Arthur in my opinion, him being a "brute" makes the 2 almost made for each other, and makes his horse's death more meaningful. For John, i would go with the Dark Bait. It's fast, strong, not as skiddish as an Arabian, and the coat clashes well with John.
I got my Buell killed in the last mission with Arthur escaping. If I had only known.

i got buel like two missions before the last arthur mission and managed to quick bond with him and when the cutscene where the horse has to die, that was the first time the game in all my 3 playthroughs made me shed a tear, i didnt cry, i shed a tear it brought me great pain to know i essentially caused that good horse to get executed by my haste to have him. taught me a lesson on patience and controlling greed
Silver turkoman and buell are my favorites...shame I couldnt get it as arthur I love that horse but I had to settle for the yellow one

During a random shootout near rhodes a train came by and instantly killed buell...

For Rachel, my Rachel died due to bounty hunters. so I got Buell and will never regret my decision, best horse in the game indeed. But for my stable, I’m definitely picking up the grey overo paint, silver turkoman and silver dapple pinto MFT.
I took Buell for Arthur because now, Hamish, Arthur and Buell are all in a better place together ❤

Came back to this game a week ago. I fell in love with this game watched your video then 5 minutes after bounty hunters killed my horse (white arabian) then killed me I was distraught at the fact I had to find another one bought a red ardennes horse found out I had a rose gray bay arabian AND a silver dapple pinto fox trotter

basically yes, you free roam as john until you get to the events of RDR1 (in theory, at least)

Am I the only one who has difficulty forgiving Buell for killing Hamish? I mean he tried at least twice to toss the old man on something that would kill him. First a rattlesnake and then a giant boar. Who knows what dark plans are lurking behind those eyes.
i suppose i just forgive buell because in the end i assume he didn't know any better/didn't know his own strength & feels awful about it...
You could do the first Hamish (along with the next 2) mission with Arthur and get save the last for John and get Buell.

I once met that Perlino Andalusian, and decided to tame it. I lassoed it and after I dismounted; my horse; Buell decided it would be a great idea to somehow fall off a cliff and require a revival all the way down there. Had to abandon the andalusion to save Buell and haven't encountered the andalusian since.

something else I've done on my current playthrough is stole that girl who asks to race you thoroughbred, it's really good, 9 or 10 speed and 7 acceleration. It's coat says brindle but to me it looks almost like a zebra, I love this horse, I just lassoed her then went and hopped on her horse, as Arthur though, not sure if she appears for John...probably as long as you ignore her as Arthur.

I've done at least 3 playthroughs and I stupidly sold Buell for all of them😐, I just finished my 4th one in the Epilogue, So I decided to start it and this time I won't sell him
I use buell bc hes a good horse and the coat of him is literally just awesome, and the saddle I have crafted goes along with him so well and I use him also to commemorate hamish, I’m john so thankfully hes permanent
I had the white Arabian since chapter 2 as Arthur and we all know what happens 😓 now as John I caught a blood bay thoroughbred 🐴

Buell is my favourite too, especially if it rains/is sunny and his flank goes all shiny. I really wish that Arthur's horses could have maybe at least been put in some new state in new austin. Like maybe when you play as John there's an obscure stable and you see it has all of Arthur's previous horses in there and you could buy then- but the bonding might reset as you'd be a new owner. Gah.
