Classic Game Room reviews the AsciiWare AsciiPad for the SNES, a 3rd party aftermarket controller for the Super Nintendo with autofire, turbo fire and slow motion features! - Zábava
This has been my favorite controller, third party or otherwise, for a long time. If you own an SNES---you need this controller.
G
Got this one for my SNES back in the day and it still works
I always thought it was adorable the "slow mo" = "pausing and unpausing real fast"
TECHNOLOGY
Anonymous
But hey. It worked as long as the pause button didn't bring up a menu or had a delayed animation or something :P
Anonymous It's the best you can do without cracking the console open and hijacking the CPU halt line etc..
Anonymous It was the worst when the game had a pause sound effect.
Anonymous I had the NES Advantage and the slow mo basically never worked. In megaman, nope. And many other games: Just nope.
+ProtecSirius I have one too out of all my games it only works on my original copy metrics not the remake
I got the ASCIIPAD back when it came out and I never used a regular SNES controller again. Even got a second one to hook up for multiplayer. This was the best of the best.
I had basically the same experience, except one was mine, and one was my brother's. Couldn't have asked for a better controller.
TheWisestWizards I still have this pad and it's still the best (for me).
+TheWisestWizards Me too! We had a few, I do not remember how many I had, I think 3 or maybe 4, but they all wore out, played too much! Best controller for SNES. I should try to find them and fix them.
+TheWisestWizards UPDATE: my brother was moving and gave me a box with cables and some of our old SNES games. Guess what was also in the box? TWO ASCIIPADs!! That's the kind of find I like, what a nice surprise. If I remember correctly, it's the two last good one, 2 others were worned out.
Cool review I've seen these around. A lot of very bizarre controllers. Can't wait for your Contra 3 review. Amazing game
Had the same pad as a kid and still use it to this day... after some cleaning this controler was back to new. This is, was, and forever will be one of if not the best controllers I have ever owned.
I found mine at a Radio Shack outlet store that used to be near Columbus OH 20 years ago. Still using it to this day, and that says loads about the quality of the product.
Props on the bit of Tropico 4 music you sneaked in. Great soundtrack on that game.
I remember seeing this controller off and on as a kid. I think I might have played with one once. Nice to see a review about it. =)
The manufacturers for the official super Nintendo controllers were ASCII and hori. That's why this pad is so good and why its basically an official snes controller that has a better shape and more features. I love these pads.
I actually had this controller growing up, it was awesome for Super Contra, as demonstrated in the vid!
that Tropico 4 music in the background.. I love you Mark :)
Something about Mark just brightens up my day.
Some of the best transitions ever :D
I used to have this controller. It was excellent. Back then slow motion was a real thing you could use because pausing the game didn't bring up a menu usually. The turbo rapid fire button configurations were good too.
I remember owning one of those back in the day. The only issue I had with mine was the stiffness of the shoulder buttons when it was new. In comparison, there was no need to "break in" the original SNES shoulder buttons. Nice review!
That is my favorite pad for the SNES since the 90's. It's especially helpful in Super Metroid.
This gamepad was my absolute favorite for the SNES. Extremely comfortable and the 'turbo' options/buttons were fantastic for Street Fighter II. Couldn't go back to the default controller after using this one.
Remember finding one of those in a goodwill as a kid, then using it to get way more silver points than needed in Chrono Trigger from the drinking contest. Good time.
Why would you dislike this? Some people just dislike good videos for no reason. Great vid!
It is just the best game channel on the internet...
Finally Mark reviews the most common alternative to the SNES controller after all these years, Neat!
Had one. Was my favorite controller. Want one again for my current SNES.
had (and still have) this one, it was most excellent despite the fact I never used the turbos
Love your channel dude
awesome review dude!
It's gotten to the stage with Classicgameroom where I just hit like once the video starts. Sad but in hindsight I've never been wrong yet. Keep it coming.
Super clean transitions haha nice
I love this controller. I have had one since my snes was new. Luckily there's an adapter for my snes retro. Awesome. That completed the snes.
great controller & great review
Love those transitions around 3:00
I had this controller and swapped the colored buttons with the stock controller's purple/lavender buttons. It was the best controller I ever owned.
I got one of these at a garge sale a while back and it is a damn fine controller. Whenever friends and myself play some multiplayer snes they get the stock controller :P
I had this controller. One of my favorite ones.
That looks so cool :') awesome video as always
By the way, is that music from Tropico 4? o:
That Tropico 4 music! loved it
Love it! Got mine in a lot of broken or untested controllers. Asciiware 4900, works perfect. Waiting for my super hori commander to arrive from Japan. Hope it's just as intergalactic!-)
Gotta love the Tropico 4 music. Also, I'm about 15 minutes away from Springfield, imagine that!
Sweet, I had one of these back in the day. Great controller!
Awesome controller. Love this thing. I actually tried hooking this up to my PS3 with my Arduino a few weeks ago to play some Tetris, it works perfectly and so does the turbo buttons (not that you'd have any use for them in Tetris.......)
I had one of these and man was it BOSS!
This is the best SNES controller to have. I still have one. It's great for the FC Twin for NES games too.
I completely forgot I even had this controller growing up.
It was great.
I've still got one of those controllers! And thanks to that controller,it made playing the megaman x series a lot easier. Not to mention making spider-man and venom Maximum carnage a breeze to play with the rapid function. This controller was just as fun to use as a game genie!
have couple of them, havent used them in 20 years i think got to test them when my analogue super nt comes
This is the controller I've used the most over the years. Mine is starting to fall apart, but it's been a great controller.
Still have this gamepad for my SNES, great pad, and great build quality as well. I hope Mark gets to review the SN Programpad Controller by STD (lol) aka InterAct, another great pad for the SNES.
This is my favorite third party gamepad of all time.
Nice, this is the controller I've always had.
I used to have a couple of these. Got them for Christmas from my aunt of all people (she wasn't very knowledgable of computers much less video games). They were great! I either lost them or sold them. I can't remember the last time I saw them. Oh well. :/ But I still have my original SNES controllers. I might have sold them with my original SNES and kept the original controllers. I must have. I don't remember that though. But it would explain why I still have my original controllers.
People who weren't familiar with the Super Famicom/PAL SNES back in the day must have been wondering, "Why does almost every 3rd party SNES controller have that same color pattern for its buttons?" XD
They didn't really have the internet back then, if you missed the issues of "Nintendo Power" previewing the system or had never been to Asia, you really had no way of knowing.
I love that music from Tropico at 0:33
I beat Monday Night Football on Super Nintendo as well as other Super Nintendo games using that controller! Awesome Controller!
Back when I had a PS1, i owned a PS1 turbo-pad controller that helped me out against King Galaxian in Pac-Man World 1. And I had so much fun. But this controller here looks pretty cool to own if I had a Super NES console.
Awesome controler
aw man! i want that dreamcast pillow!
Looks nice :3!
I really like the Super Nintendo Fighter Pad controller from Asciiware.
lol memories :D got the same controller before 20 years ago xD i loved it
Nice, I live like 15minutes from Springfield Ohio. Though I don't recommend ever visiting Springfield, it is quite a dump in places.
I like hardware reviews, specially if they have Axelay and Contra in them, it can't get better than that.
I don't have this controller, but for some reason I have the box for it. Also, where did you get a plush dreamcast
I bought a AsciiWare Asciipad for $2 one day. I like it but prefer the original but good for turbo if you find auto-fire useful.
I actually have a controller Mark reviewed for once.
I was thinking about turbo controls recently when I was playing around with the brush on Splatoon. It's really hard to spam that Z button on the back and would be cool to have some kind of turbo button for it :/
Love mine!
Cool, I had this one as a kid :-)
Hi, a week ago I fished out a snes out of dumpster and there was this ASCIIWARE ASCIIPAD controller with it and I wondered how the heck does the slow motion work? I mean there is no extra data ports where it can spam commands to the snes :P
I own 2 of these beauties! I love them! LOVE THEM!!!! WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASCIIFOR?
OuijaFreak no.
The ascii pad sucks.
EPCOTFan13 homey y u necro
I remember seeing this in game magazines.
Has Mark ever reviewed the Tropico series? I can't help but notice a lot of his review BGM is from Tropico 4.
I love the plush Sega Dreamcast! :D
Magnificent controller i have 4 myself
This was the best controller I ever owned. Hands down
This controller was amazing. Easily my best SNES accessory purchase ever - and the most inexpensive. Can’t beat that combination.
I pray to the gamer gods that some company would replicate it and re-release it for the SNES Classic Mini. So no luck :(
I keep coming across these controllers at flea markets. They seem so crappy, however I do need a good turbo controller for my SNES. I have a bunch for my NES and Genesis consoles.
is there a way to fix the up button on mine it's really iffy.
I use to have one of these
But does it work on the Hyundai Super Comboy?
Recuerdo haber jugado con esos controles aqui en Arequipa - Peru en 1993, los usaba para jugar Final Fight para que los puñetazos sean mas rapidos.
PD: I don`t speak english man, sorry.
The Blockbuster version of this Controller is sega six button layout even though it's still a snes controller
Where do you get all your cool intromusics from ?
This is my default controller for the SNES.
Uh-oh....Contra 3 review on it's way.....get a copy now while you can....they're about to go up in price by about $50.
Glad I already got my copy.
Crap. It JUST occurred to me why there about to go up. I guess I need to be looking at what other Konami games I want.
GaggleofDoozies Reviews don't magically make the price go up. LOL
Had this when i was a kid and, didn't know how the thing worked lol
Mark sounds like he's drunk on that intro, oh wait.... maybe he was!!
it`s pretty good controller !!!!
best snes controller my favorite for the console
I need to get a Sega Hat!!!
Awesome 😈
I love Axelay...
Oh yeah!
The "slow" feature actually slows down the game? How does it do that?
Come to think of it, the Hori controller made for the Super Game Boy does the same thing. Hey, you should review that, too!
It looks cool I was scared it would be an ASS-ciiware controlller
soundtrack of tropico 4 nice
I've seen this controller in a flea market.
Contra 3 is hard even in slo-mo, great game though!
What's with the Tropico music?
tropico music? nice!
What does Auto do? And how does Slow work?
