  • This video is about the DART railway which was started in 1984
Made in 1986 it tells about the building and history of the line along with passenger reactions to the new service.
Made by myself Jim Dolan as a student for my Film TV certificate course in the Senior College Ballyfermot.
It was shot on VHS format so excuse the quality

The older and much more comfortable for passengers linke Hoffman busche built darts shown here are, by and large, still in service. They had an overhaul by Siemens a few years ago and are still on the tracks.

Ireland has such unique beauty. The cloudy and foggy weather, the vegetation, the seaside. Love it!

4:13 I used to travel to school through Dun Laoghaire while they were digging out the 30" of granite, and I still have a sticker from the pre-DART train doors, with their slide-down windows: "As engineering works are taking place on the adjacent track, DO NOT LEAN OUT OF THE WINDOW".
In '84, I lived near Sandymount station, which (along with Seapoint) was re-opened at the launch of the DART, so on the first day of DART service, anyone who went to the new station got a free ride to Bray & back.

The success of the DART has also led to the development of the Luas and the upcoming MetroLink in a way.
I never knew DART buses were a thing. Oh how I wish the buses in Dublin were more like the DART.

Was it not 1984 that the DART first arrived?

4:46 wow there was DART buses as well? I'm a bit too young to remember those times, when it seems like everything in Ireland was painted the same shade of green (as opposed to just the postboxes and the trains these days).
This is actually a really good documentary, detailed, and interesting to see from the time the DART was new, although the editing is terrible (but yes I understand it was 33 years ago, and I imagine it was a bit more of a pain in the sack, before computers. I study sound production with some post production audio, and I've ended doing some imprecise edits as well , trying to get projects in last minute!)

All city buses in Ireland were green and had the same green seats as the DART and they were older than the DART.
Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann, and Iarnród Éireann were founded on 2nd February 1987 and before that every bus and train in Ireland had the CIE logo on them.
I remember in Waterford when I was a kid the bus stops were the CIE logo but with "BUS" instead of "CIE" on them and were replaced with Bus Éireann bus stops, and the green buses got painted red & white.
And those green buses were built in Ireland at a new factory in Shannon. After the factory was built, the first bus to come off the production line was to be driven by the Minister For Transport to a hotel for a party to celebrate, but the bus broke down twice and never made it to the hotel which destroyed the factory's reputation and CIE was the only customer they ever had.

I made this documentary as part of a TV production diploma certificate in the 1980’s
Your right the sound is not great
I was working with very limited equipment then VHS tape machine Basically
I gained unlimited access to all areas of the system

I wonder would people still say the same good things about the service? I hope they would, but obviously crowding is more of an issue now

It needs an expansion, its network is still way too small

Shame that it's no longer really fit for purpose with the trainsets it has. Way too cramped these days.

Two of them mentioned that the DART was clean. But it still gets its electricity by burning fossil fuels.

    • @jimadolan1

It’s fuel efficient ,no more than that !

Regenerative braking means returning power to the grid therefore energy efficiency
