- Detailed explanation of how to tune and restring your guitar to play in Raised-B tuning. Dave Matthews plays a number of songs with this tuning such as Stay or Leave, You Never Know, Oh, Lying In The Hands of God and more. The gauge of each string and the tuning is as follows:
1st string-16ga/B
2nd string-11ga/F#
3rd string-15ga/D
4th string-18ga/A
5th string-30ga/E
6th string-42ga/B

Carson!! Welcome back, man!! This blows my mind because, I kid you not, I was just thinking today “I wonder when Carson will be back?” 🤯
Hahaha!! Man, I’ve been trying to make time to film these lately and it just hasn’t worked out at all...but today i just said F it and recorded this one. Should be getting stuff out on a more regular basis soon!
@@carsonmac haha! That’s great. Awesome man, looking forward to it. Good to have you back
@@carsonmac If you wish, you can use an Octave4plus .006 High B for higher jangle. This tuning is basically Baritone Nashville Tuning with a High Octave 2nd string.
For strings you can use from a set of Extra Light 12 String Guitar Strings, the lowest String will be the Low A String tuned up a step, the next 4 will be the Octave Stirngs from the 12 String Set (with the High G Tuned Down a half step), & the last one will be the Regular Gauge B String (or if you're lucky a High B at .006).
I love you Carson, your the light in this world we call home! Keep at it
My mom got me into Dave matthews in 2018 (I’m only 16) and at first I was confused by his music because I’ve never heard music like it. I gradually started listening to it everyday when I would work on homework, but I would only listen to under the table and dreaming. I slowly got deeper and deeper into them and started searching to see if I could play some of their songs to show my mom and make her happy. I’ve used your tutorials and tips of watching Dave mattews live performances to learn my fav songs by him, and you’ve helped me to form a better relationship with my mom. THANK YOU!
Man. That is an awesome comment. More happy than anything that I can help you and your mom have a better relationship, that’s one of the most important things in the world! I was the same when i first started listening to them, I honestly didn’t like it much but it gets under your skin and you fall in love with it. Keep jamming man!
As a Chef in NYC I feel your pain Carson! Your channel has kept me sane throughout the pandemic-thanks for the great lessons.
Man, and I’m in Texas where we’ve been opened back up for awhile...can’t imagine what you’re going through! Thanks for the kind words, hope things get back to normal for you soon!
He’s back! My October is complete!
You know it! 😎
Carson, I cant tank you enough for this video. I've spent $100's on strings trying to get the right tuning. I almost was about the by a baritone guitar just to play these specific songs. your explanation and what to do solved a year of trial and error. I can't thank you enough for this.. Please keep these videos coming, you're and excellent player and teacher. really have helped me in my learnings.
Awesome matthew! I really wanted to get this video done earlier, sorry i couldn’t have saved you some money haha 😂 Should have some videos up and done over the next few weeks 🤘
You are great! Thanks!! Good luck with your restaurant! I am a restaurant broker, it's been a tough year for you guys. I appreciate you guys. Thank you very much!
You could also use Heavy Gauge Acoustic Strings tuned down a Fourth to B Standard (or Baritone Strings optimized for B Standard) you can add some extra low end.
Hey man, no offense, but can you condense some of these observations into one comment? I appreciate the advice but it’s hard for people to sift through 10-15 comments that become a little repetitive. Thanks.
@@carsonmac That would be a good idea, I just have to combine some of my thoughts into 1 comment cause they're very very interesting thoughts.
@@carsonmac Hi there, for me I used the Octave Strings from an Octave4Plus All Octaves tuned 12 String Set.
It's basically a Baritone version of Nashville Tuning with a High Octave 2nd string. You can also use an Octave4Plus .006 High B.
Carson Mac You can also just tune to E & put a capo on Fret 7. Aquila makes 154C High B Tuning Nylon Guitar Strings which are under fairly low tension (you might wanna tie ball ends at the ends).
Baritone guitars are the way to go when playing in lower tunings...There are designated string/gauge sets. When you try and tune a standard guitar that low they will sound flabby and put some serious tension on the neck...AND often the nut cannot accommodate the heavier string gauges.. I used either .015-.060 or .014-.068. Baritones range from 27"-30" scales. I use a variety of tunings but again on a baritone guitar. Standard tuning on a baritone is B E A D F# B. ALSO TRY. AEADF#B. AEADEA (equiv to DADGAD). . DGADEA. ADGCEA
Carson Mac You can also use an Octave4Plus .006 High B.
Welcome back! I restrung an old guitar I got while over seas to raised B. Been working with it while in lock down. Only reason I did it was to play Come Tomorrow, the song feels right for our current times. Give it a shot, loved to hear you teach it to the channel
Definitely will. It’s on the list 🤙
I wish you the best of luck with all your troubles man, keep your head up. The worlds crazy right now. Happy you’re back.
Thanks so much man. Things are a lot better now, it was tough for a bit but I’ll be back on here a lot more 🤘
Welcome back Carson!!Good to have you back!!
Glad to be back!
Glad to see your back Carson. I found your channel at the start of quarantine and you have no idea how much it’s helped me with not only DMB songs I never could figure out before but also with all the extra jams you include that aren’t normally in regular tabs. So just wanted to say Thank you very much!
Also, it’s wild this is your first video back as I Recently strung my 2nd guitar to Raised B. Completely worth it if you have an extra guitar just sitting there like I did. Only spent $5 on a set of extra light strings to get 5 of the gauges you mentioned and another $5 for a light string pack for just that .16 gauge string for the normal high E slot. Also downloaded Free PanoTuner app on my phone to get that F# tuning down as my tuner is pretty basic. And that’s it, sounds great and about 10 DMB songs you can play so much easier than putting capo on 7th fret. Cheers!
Definitely! I’m pumped you had an extra guitar to restring, cause my concern with this video is people having the ability to restring a guitar while still having a standard tunes guitar as well. Anyways, the raised-b just sounds amazing when you do it right. Keep jamming man! 🤘
Just finished changing my old guitar to raised B and damn does it sound incredible (even if it took me forever to figure out what octaves I was supposed to be tuning to, especially on the F#). You the man, Carson, as usual.
What’s up Hayden?! Yeah...it’s insane how freaking good it sounds! Have fun with it 🤘
Cue to 8:07. You're welcome.
Carson. Missed you bud. Hope the business is going well - cant wait until my notification goes off for the patio chats! Glad to see you back!
What’s up Jason! Patio chats will return soon, i promise. I’ve missed them too 🤘
Just to note a Wound 18 (or 17) gauge string is under lower tension than a Plain String at the same gauge cause of the thinner core wire, so it'll be looser.
Awesome to have you back bro! Thank you for theses videos. I’ve spent many quarantined hours working on them. I’d love to support your business. You’re here in DFW?
Glad i could make quarantine better for ya! I’m actually out in Lubbock but hope to expand to DFW soon!
This tone is just so much prettier than capo on 7. Fantastic stuff man
The sound is so much better and that’s why i had to get the strings. The capo was just too flat for me
It is so good to have you back!!! I did a double take when I saw the date of this most recent post and yelled out, YES!!!! Dave songs are tough but listening to you break them down is making us all better guitar players overall. BIG WELCOME BACK. Good things do happen in 2020!
Thanks so much Jeff! Really appreciate it man. Should have quite a bit coming out on here soon!
Welcome back!
The 18 Gauge Wound String isn't too thick, it's just right because compared to a Plain Steel 18 the tension is a little bit lower.
Love how this sounds so much better than using a capo. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Dave use a capo expect for Sining From The Windows. Tutorial on how to string a guitar maybe? Good to see you back!
Definitely sounds so much better...he also used a capo on Good Good Time back in ‘04...what would you like to see being strung? Standard strings?
@@carsonmac yeah man, I just recently bought 10 gauge elixirs, but I have never even strung a guitar before. I typically just have the guitar shop do it for me, but I want to be able to incAse I get some raise B strings! I’m tired of using capo to play stay or leave! 🤣
@@franksfam8394 A capo has an advantage is that you can easily change keys.
Carson!! Glad to know you’re ok and that you’re back! Cant wait to see some new vids and streams I’m so excited thank you!
Yessir! I want to get the live streams going within the next few weeks for sure 🤘
The thinnest Wound String available is a 16w from Eagle Tone Music.
Love to see you back man!
Pumped to be back!
Carson Mac If you double the part with a Baritone at B Standard it'll sound kinda like a 12 String Baritone w/ a High F#.
I did this last night and it sounds AMAZING. Thanks so much
You got it 🫡
My man!!! What a treat! I came here to raise my tuning to play Come Tomorrow and of course you’re a DMB fan too!!!!! How cool!!!
He lives!! thanks for all you do man, welcome back!
Absolutely man, thank you!
Carson Mac A Baritone Guitar tuned to B Standard can play this song too
Good to know! Thanks
@@carsonmac The thinnest wound string from Octave4Plus is a 13 (eventually a 10 and thinner), and Wound Strings are under lower tension than plain steel strings because the core wire is thinner.
I would like this video but it’s currently at 41 likes and I don’t mess with perfection. Welcome back, friend!
😂😂 go like it now, it’s not on 41 anymore!
Carson Mac Make sure you find the Raised B Tuning strings.
Thanks a lot. That's very helpful. I've tuned an old guitar in raised A and use a capo on fret 2. It's not exactly how it should be fine but it works too and I could use standard strings (and swapping them)
Carson glad to hear you're doing well! I would love it if you would do come tomorrow.
Will do!
@@carsonmac Awesome, thanks!
Carson! Good to have you back!
Hey David! Glad to be back 🤘
Glad to see you back, hope you guys are doing good! Love your videos man youve helped me a ton!
Thanks Colin! Doing good man. Thanks for the kind words 🤘
Hey Carson!!! As everyone's been saying, welcome back and I hope that everything is going okay, with all the insanity. Thanks for the advice and hope everyone holds strong. Interested to hear your thoughts on the Dave fan request shows. Have a good day!
Yes, definitely doing a live chat soon and we can discuss! Can’t wait 🤘
Or you can call it "Baritone Nashville Tuning with a High F#" which is a 4th below "Nashville Tuning with a High B at .006".
You the man Carson!!!
Great to see you back
Great to be back 🤘
finally you’re back! so much has happened since you last posted!
Man, no joke. Look forward to catching up on a live chat soon!
Hey Carson, Thanks for doing these lessons. Very appreciated. If you're into it, I'd love to see you teach smooth rider . Either way, I appreciate your work.
For sure 🤙
Welcome back brother!
Happy holidays, 🍻
Happy Holidays Ron!
Beautiful job can you please give us “So Right” I’m pretty sure there’s alternate tuning
Yup, been working on that for awhile!
Ok, thank you so much. Keep up the terrific work.
I went with a Wound 18 since the tension is a little bit lower. Dave Matthews uses a Wound 18 which sounds just right.
Thanks Carson for all the tutorials and for all the work you do! - - - For the community, does anyone have references to where to buy the string gauges listed in the video and description? I checked Elixir, Martin, D'Addario, Ernie Ball, and Amazon already; some of the strings simply do not show as available. As has been noted in the comments here, you can piece this arrangement together across several packs, but I am hoping to just buy the singles instead. Anyone have references or links?
Man, I wish I could help...hopefully someone can give you some advice on that because I’m sure you’re not the only one having that problem. Good luck!
@@carsonmac Thanks Carson. I may have found a bit of a hack. Not exactly the same gauges, but a user (Chris B.) at the link below explains it as follows - I had an extra B string, so this worked for me!
"It is achieved by tossing the low E string in the trash and stringing the A string where the low E should be, the D string where the A should be, so forth and so on. Then you're left with no string in the high E position. You then take a spare B string and string it to that position. Tune the guitar B E A D F# B and voila, you're in raised B."

Thanks again!
@@carsonmac Thought I would update here. I found a place called StringJoy to help build a Raised B set. The strings are made in-house, they have a tension calculator on their site, offer a free service to consult on the tuning you want to achieve, and do custom orders. I tried the consultant path (just to see) and he provided the following gauges for Raised B: .016 - .0105 - .0135 - .018p - .028 - .038. I just put them on my Taylor 914ce and they sound nice. I know they are not what is posted for this video - next time I will order exactly what is posted to compare. In light of many of the major providers not offering (at the times I have checked) all of the strings in the gauges described as singles, not wanting to buy several packs to piece the configuration together, and the "hacks" to achieve Raised B do not sound as great, this was the easiest way for me to get there. Maybe others can find it useful as well. Cheers!
Hell yeah thanks man. Kept snapping my g
Welcome back!!!!! Please do The Space Between!!
Welcome back man! Missed yah
Glad to be back!
Hey Carson! Is Come Tomorrow played in this tuning?? I think I've got it figured out but using a capo on 7th fret....
Yessir!
Also good for Here Comes the Sun.
Hey Carson just found your channel and I love your content. Instantly subscribed. Can you confirm these are the gauges Dave uses on his high B rig? I want to set mine up as close to his as I can. Thanks so much
You're back!
Finally 😂 I’ve missed this more than anyone
he’s back!!!
You know it 🤘😎🤘
Dude, where have you been? Glad you're back!
Hey Ed! Just fighting through 2020 man 😎
Thanks for putting all this together, you're def my go to guy for DM. One way I see people stringing for raised B is to use a standard set of strings, toss the thickest string, move everything up one, then add another 15g or 16g string where the high e is (high B in this case), then tune accordingly. You're setup is very specific. Can you comment on the advantage of your approach? Thanks
Been looking on elixir…. Looks like the custom strings don’t go any lower than .22 gauge? Not sure if you have any info. Maybe I’m looking at the wrong sets?
Hey Carson! I was able to get all the strings from a local store and got all the strings tuned except for the high b string (0.016 inch), which broke while tuning right around A. Do you have any advice or know why that might be? Thanks!
Great tutorial Carson. The single string list on the Elixir site lists the gauges starting at .022 and up. Where did you get the lower gauge strings?
Hey carson is there any chance you could teach the Jimi Thing jam he sometimes does??? I would love to leanr that
Hey Brennan! I put the Listener Supported jam on my Jimi tutorial on this channel...have you watched that?
@@carsonmac yes I had just found it after I comment this hahaha oops probably should’ve looked but the one that fascinates me is this one czcams.com/video/Lseiw218jHI/video.html
I tried this tuning with my Martin 000X1AE, and it sounds great unplugged. The problem is that my amp only picks up the top two strings when I have it plugged in, so that’s all that comes out. It sounds great when I have a microphone in front of the sound hole, so I’m thinking there’s gonna be something wrong with the pickup system in the guitar itself. Is anyone else having this problem?
Interesting Sam...I honestly haven’t plugged this in with these strings. Will be interested to hear if anyone else is having the same issue!
@@carsonmac I actually just adjusted my saddle a little bit and it seems to be working fine now! Kinda weird but I’m glad it’s working regardless 😂
Can’t wait for an Ocean and the Butterfly tutorial :)
What is Ocean?
@@carsonmac “The Ocean and the Butterfly” is the song that Dave debuted at the Jefferson Theater performance a few days ago I believe.
Man, i need to catch up 😂 been out of the loop lately! I’ll check it out ASAP, thanks Braeden
Carson, any way you can teach us So Right on acoustic?
For sure, still trying to figure that one out! It’s a tough translation from baritone to standard tuning but I’ll work on it!
@@carsonmac Awesome. Can’t wait. Thanks!
Could you do The Maker?
Definitely, it’s on the list for sure!
Any chance we can get a So Right lesson? It's driving me nuts not being able to figure it out lol
Definitely John, I’m still trying to get that down too to be honest. Translating that baritone to standard tuning is a killer for me
Cool I can't wait to try this! I have my old takamine dreadnought nashville strung (it had a cracked neck repair) seems to be holding well, do you think this would be more tension then standard? Also have you seen the Howard Stern show version of whiter shade of pale? Dave uses one of his parlor style, rockbridge guitars and appears to play the same chords shapes as he does on the Veitte Gryphon guitar. I've tried playing along with it and I seemed off. I wonder this is an eq trick or alternate tuning or just an octave effect or something.
Good to see ya bud , yeah 😀
🤘😎🤘
Is this the baritone guitar tuning that Dave uses?
Can you link to where you bought the strings?
For sure, let me know if you have issues...
