Nah, can't do it. The audience wanting them together was what kept them coming back. If they become a couple, you'd get maybe one good season out of it before the audience loses interest. Exact same thing happened with Castle. The good seasons are the ones where the writers hang the possibility out there.

I think the writer for the show was sadistic! Both Harm and Mac seemed ever so close to being on the same page for all the episodes but then the writer put a twist in to void the love connection. This happened throughout the series even up to the end. It seemed the magic happened only in their imaginations. There was no reason they could have slept together every once in a while. Mac said she is a one person person so when this happened that her Rene’ appearing because her father died, he should have written it in after they spent at least the one loving night together getting closer and closer. Harm would have consoled her and she would have moved on building the relationship better.
Did Sarah MacKenzie really expect Mic Brumby to listen to what she has to say after he turned around to look at her for a brief moment before he headed back to Australia after he realized she didn't love him with all of her heart? Then she couldn't talk to Harm face to face about her problem after Renee came to him because her father passed away suddenly from heart failure and Sarah later stood outside in the rain as she watched Harm giving Renee comfort during her loss. Sarah couldn't blame them.

This is a moment where Sarah should have been selfish; that is, one of those rare moments you shouldn't care (too much) about others (Renée) because it concerns your own and whole well-being. Her being with Harm was what they both wanted; so she should have thought: "Screw Renée! I want to be with him and need him (far more) at the moment. And she''l get over it." So she should have said to Harm something like: "But I need you more at the moment!" She was completely devastated by what Brumby did to her. And as for Harm, the same thing applies to him (although less, because not devestated): he should have consoled Sarah because he loved her and not Renée. But it was also his duty to console her, since she was devestated completely.
