I'm going through a very paralyzing bout of clinical depression. I found this and in the middle of it I was smiling. This is so happy. Thank You.
Hope you're doing better now, I've been there before. I found this recently and I had the same reaction. Better quality version here:

This is my parent's generation that fought the worst war in history but maintained an amazing amount of positive energy and 'can do' attitudes. My dad never missed a single day of work in his life. NOT ONE SINGLE DAY. My parents were married for over 50 years like a lot of their generation. Now if someone makes it to 10 or 15 years we say they 'had a good run'. Well not as far as the WW2 vets were concerned. They took marriage vows seriously. The older I get the more I have to admire those people. Rest easy mom and dad you guys earned it.
Indeed...hear hear...Golden Weddings? hmm not any more
My parents lost their homes in the Blitz, my father later was conscripted into the Navy>North Atlantic Convoys. They never acted victimised and got on with their life...father worked "3 nights and a Sunday" if he could get it
I'm only 17 and this is appealing to me. I absolutely love classic
28 now, still listening ?
54 and finding here. Beautiful and classy
Dorothy's in the running for the prettiest girl I ever saw, and when she's dancing in front of that mirror, well, if I saw it live I'd fall over.
She is truly adorable
And wow, such tailoring
Ditto
I want to have an acting career like Dorothy Dandridge. She was so beautiful and sophisticated. I love watching these old black & white movies. I mainly grew up watching ShirleyTemple but I finally got to watch Carmen Jones two years ago and I would love to watch more of Dorothy's movies.
I hope more black musicians’, dancers’, singers’ videos are made available! I can’t get enough! Very powerful!
Damn, I wish they would make music videos like this today! Simple, entertaining and with a clear message to coincide with the title song!
She was just absolutely gorgeous!
haha I LOVE this song! Dorothy D. was such a cutie pie! And Paul White is so animated, I love it!
Both great dancers and actors.
That's real entertainment, talent, beauty and fun. All right!!
She is fine as hell 😍 now that that’s out of the way....wow. Love the music, singing and dancing. Their choice of words and clothing is amazing I love it all 😁😁
We love you Dorothy!
Love this soundie - both Paul & Dot are great. That's Geneva "Neve" Williams sitting at the sewing machine. Dot's mum Ruby's close friend - the chaperon to the Dandridge Sisters who ruled their lives until the D. Sis broke up.
what a figure! wow.. Stunning lady
She was too darn cute!
Love this. I return to this clip at least a few times every few months. It gives me so much joy that words fail me. What legends these two are.
Omg what a cutie !!!
wasn't she gorgeous? as well as talented
Yes she was
OMG that dress looks like it's painted on her :)
Wow I heard this song by other singers, but I love this one the best, more flavor & finesse., thank you for this beautiful memories of the past.
This was too cute:-)
These were the original video jukebox from the early 40's! And Dorothy Dandridge was undoubtedly one of their greatest stars. Even now she just oozes class and beauty.
She looks like the girl in the lazy town cartoon 1941 scrub me mamma with a boogie beat.
They probably copied her likeness for it.
She was beautiful.
On CZcams see film clip of Dorothy as a maid in a hotel suite as composer Hoagy Carmichael at piano plays "Lazy Bones," comically ironically as a black "busboy" porter conscientiously industriously carries in a tray of cocktails precariously balanced atop his head (Dorothy hovering to catch a crash), yet he never drops.
This is BRILLIANT, love it. Thank you for the post.
Dorothy was soooo pretty!
OMG, this is tooooo good!!!
I can picture Eddie Murphy reenacting the guys part perfectly... lol
Great song!
this is a very well written song
And hilariously witty sketch ... e.g., the opening shop-window card, 'tailoring for Males and Frails."
Just plain brilliant!
THANK YOU FOR SHARING,
Genial 💚💙💜👍
THE ORIGINAL VIDEO VIXEN! EXUDING TRUE CLASS AND NATURAL BEAUTY!
Only 157,333 views as of 09/27/2022. People just don't know how great the talent was from that era. Should have two 00's after the three 3's.
LYRICS: A ZOOT SUIT (FOR MY SUNDAY GAL)
(as sung by Dorothy Dandridge & Paul White; 1942)
Guy:
I want ah zoot suit with ah reet pleat
With ah drape shape, and ah stuff cuff
To look sharp enough to see my Sunday gal
I want ah reef sleeve with ah right stripe
And ah vest pressed in the glad plaid
in the latest fad to see my Sunday gal
I wanna look keen so my dream will say
"You don't look like the same beau."
So keen that she'll scream
"Ahh! Here comes my walking rainbow."
So make ah zoot suit with ah reet pleat
And with ah drape shape, and ah stuff cuff
To look sharp enough to see my Sunday gal
Gal:
I want ah brown gown with ah zop top
And ah hip slip, and ah laced waist
In the sharpest taste to see my Sunday man
I want ah scat hat with a trim brim
Ah sag bag with ah riff zip
to look plenty hip to see my Sunday Sam.
Justa wanna look keen so my dream will say
"Ain't I the lucky fellah"
So keen that he'll scream, "Baby, you sure look mellow".
So make ah brown gown with ah zop top
Ah hip slip, and ah laced waist
In the sharpest taste to see my Sunday man
...
Guy:
I gotta zoot suit with ah reet pleat
With ah drape shape, and ah stuff cuff
So I look sharp enough to see my Sunday gal
I gotta brown gown with ah zop top
And ah hip slip, and ah laced waist
In the sharpest taste to see my Sunday Sam
I wanna look keen so my dream will say
"You don't look like the same beau."
So keen that I'll scream
"Here comes my walking rainbow"
I gotta zoot suit with the reet pleat
And the stuff cuff with the glad plaid
In the latest fad to see my Sunday gal [Girl sings "to see my Sunday guy"].
I really enjoy how the man and woman each have a segment describing the outfit they want, and then each one gets it, and they join up to show off happily at the end.
imagine if they'd had made a series out of this like Trapped in the Closet
Thank you for the post of Dorothy and Paul.
Aunt Frannie’s favorite Soundie!
amazing!
wooooow look her body is like a cute doll❤❤❤❤
she doesn’t deserve him😅he seems like a player when she looks like a princess 👑
so pretty hairstyle and wow her body s perfect
0:43-2:36 My life feels so cosmic and starry again 🌌✨❤
Precioso!!!!
Fantastic
Great music
Them Gals sure knew how to style it !
This music is good, and very listenable, but it's forgotten... I myself listen to black metal, but I love this! I just don't understand why people don't play this music anymore...
So catchy!
Why can't they make decent but snappy music videos like this anymore!
This is super cute. I love :)
OMG, that waist!
great.
Bet this beats anything on MTV or BET.
As my grandmother would say, "all reet now!"
@forgedabouted
I was a teen, and danced in Soundies made for the southern Negro market. .Paid AGVA scale. These were shown in the small "box" and on the big screen in the segregated south. Our music was "taken" and much money made on it, but not us.
She's MY walkin' rainbow! WHO NEEDS THESE PLASTIC "DIVAS" we've got today? The skinny gals with big hits who shake their hips and stroke their tits, who try to be sly and wail and rhyme and fail almost every time? THIS is the real thing, the kind of thing we'll never see again! VIVA DOROTHY!
Dorothy looks so cute here.
Paul White pulls off that stereotypical style beautifully. He can really ham it up and Dorthy is a top entertainer as well
Tooo Cute, fun song. LOL
The movie is ridiculous. But the music is superb - who is the fabulous tenorsax player?
I wish this was in color
Thanks; I'm referring to this in an essay. I was wondering, what does 'males and frails' (at the start) mean?
thats jive talk for men and women
I have since graduated
@c3cubed Aha; I sensed so. I just couldn't find any corroboration. Thanks!
is the skirt made of silk or some other material. it shimmers nicely. i did not expect such an affect from a B/W film.
Now I'll see if i can find that one with Harpo Marx and that other girl singer . Its historic as well
@GwenAYF that's very interesting. i bet if you post a video or a blog describing those experiences, a lot of people would benefit from it. if you don't mind my asking, have you ever seen on youtube any of the soundies that you were in?
can someone plz share the lyrics?
my english s bad
In terms of the performance style, it's no more overacted than any Fred Astaire movie. It's the early 40's - ALL musical performers were exaggerated. They are in no way being shown as fools, but as tasteful dressers and a cute couple.
8 years ago, when you wrote this, you were right. Today, in 2022 this is considered politically incorrect and even demeaning....
She's better looking than Halle Berry.
@colintron If someone did not yet reply to your question, "Frails" was simple slang, referring to "Females" at that time. I guess today, such a term would be considered an absolute no-no in an overly-politically correct environment, considering some of the "frails" today participate in actual combat in war zones overseas!
My, times have changed, but a charming term then nonetheless.
the truth hurts, that how it was
Dorothy was super cute and talented. The 1940's weren't a great time to be black but showed black potential. We regardless of race sexual orientation and gender owe black pioneers of that day and before due credit. Without them the freedom we today take for granted would not be.
Dorothy!
this was 1942, when northern whites were going on wildcat strikes in auto plants to keep Black men out of certain jobs. paul white did what he had to do in order to secure his daily bread - - can he really be flawed for that? what's interesting is that a (light-skinned) Black woman was allowed to come across as sophisticated, while a (dark-skinned) Black man was cornered into a more stereotypical role.
lyrics! haha
Marvellous. She left us much, much too soon.Preminger destroyed her.
@tee12cutie me 2 :O
Man, she was hot
That black guy is so weird...but Miss Dandridge is cute & gorgeous...& classy!
She is the best of a candy , but is dancing with a disconnected style partner ,
its funny how those old black and white cameras work. if u werent dark black, ur skin just looked white in the camera and the only way to tell if you were black was with other facial features or your voice (not accent, but black people's vocal chords are a bit different too. i've heard black people singing without an accent and i could still instantly tell that they were black). like i could still tell she was black even though her skin looked white in the camera.
The Lady Dandridge is Smoking ! But Mr White needs to get himself a different tailor, coz MAN ! That Zoot sucks !
Today, in 2022, this is almost considered politically incorrect....
hmmm
i prefer the Tom and Jerry version !!
These are brilliant performers and I disagree that the man looks like a fool. I think his talent is extraordinary. And of course the effervescence and scintillation of Dorothy Dandridge is legendary. For those of you harping that these performers had to "cater to painful stereotypes" I flip my hand over in dismissal. Every performer has to cater to stereotypes or not make any money. Get over it. That is all!
Yes...as a professional banjo player, I can attest to the truth of that!
she is really thin here
like he had a choice are you kidding me I can tell u don't know much about this countries history!!!!!!!
He had a choice and that was his style choice. Rochester was a lot smoother than him with the dancing.
There's a cleaned up version of this on Kino's Soundies collection
