Garden tip: Wear a hat, gloves, and sunblock. Try to do yard work early in morning or late in evening when sun goes down when it’s cooler in the day. Drink lots of water to stay hydrated. You did great!!!

From another amateur that loves working in my lawn here's some tips. 1. Get you some cheap rubber boots to work in the lawn and protect your lower legs and feet. 2. Hair up and hat on. Htown heat is harsh on your body temperature. 3. Perennial plants are best for return on your $$. 4. Learn about our zone (we live in Zone 9). Bermudagrass Central, Lakehouse Lawn Care and the Pest and Lawn Ginja channel's on CZcams are awesome resources for all things lawn care. You did a great job! I wish I had vlogged my lawn makeovers. So peaceful and relaxing working in the yard.

I am 66 years old and I do my gardening by myself because the people that you hire don't care what kind of a job that they do. Just make sure that you water early in the morning or an hour before dark. So your hard work won't go to waste. I live in Central Florida and everything needs watering at least three times a week!

Your garden turned out really pretty! I like the flower color choices you made! What a deal you hit on those edging bricks for $2 each! They look really good! I am sorry to tell you that in most climates annual plants don’t last “year round” as you said. They pretty much only last for one summer. Then when the weather cools down, they die. 😪 For flowers and plants that will return every spring, you’ll have to do some research. Search for perennial plants that grow well in your state and in either sun or shade, depending on your garden bed. Since you asked...I have redesigned and planted several garden beds in our yard myself with my husband digging holes for me. Before I did it, almost everything in our front yard bed died due to shade from a new tree planted by my neighbor. I replanted my front bed in the fall with sale plants from the local garden center. I don’t buy the big-size plants, because the smaller plants are cheaper and they GROW! Ha ha! It takes a few years for everything to grow enough to fill in, but the bed looked neat and I had room for annual flowers.I learned this rhyme about growing perennial plants: The first year, they sleep; the second year, they creep and the third year they leap. So basically a perennial planted in 2021 will look exactly the same all year as if it is sleeping. In 2022 as it settles in more, it will grow a little more and the third year, the growth will take off. It’s exciting to see the difference from year to year, at least I enjoy it! Good luck! I subscribed!

I love your reply ❤ And the rhyme was everything because I thought the squirrels had stolen ALL the bulbs I planted. Now I find out they're just sleeping. 😄 I'm gonna keep my eye on them this year.😊

@@mavisjones4750 what does "go to seed" mean?

    • @mavisjones4750
      @mavisjones4750 Před 2 lety +3

@@phaedra8020 The purpose of annuals flowering is to create seeds in order to produce for the next year. If you dead head them, annuals tend to keep producing flowers. If you don't, after the bloom is spent, a seed head will develop.

    • @kendranash6130

I love zinnias. I let them dry on the stem and then get my seed for next year. Spend once and enjoy for many years. Of course you have to not mind the dead looking flower. I do mine in a back garden so it doesn't bother me too much.

    @lorikeogan2457 Před 3 lety +41

Okay I left a comment earlier in the middle of the video This is my first video of you and I'm the one that's the or was an interior exterior decorative designer for about 20 years started when I was really really young. You did an amazing job, it looks gorgeous. The only thing I would tell you is the cement pieces that you use to line the beds, you want to make sure that you have a level and make sure that each one that connects to the the one in front of it is the same height and same depth as the one prior or over time they will sink and grow into the ground or come out and it'll be up down up down and not look like a straight line So if you do the work the first time right off the bat then it will look good over time. So you want to dig down a little bit further and then set each one of them at the same height and make sure that they're the same height leveled. That would be my suggestion as well as yes I believe and did when I was in my twenties and teens and the rest of my life I did it all myself before I knew anything I didn't have a man do it I was a single mother young and I learned to do it all myself and even when I had a guy in my life I still did it myself! If you learn and you know you'll just become smarter and smarter and you won't have to rely on somebody else to do it! And hiring it out is just a waste of money, so if you want to spend your money on things that you'd rather spend your money on learn this and do the work yourself 👍😍❣️ The girl I am very proud of you 👏👏😉❤️❣️👍❣️😍❣️❣️❣️

    Holy Moly!!
You’re gonna cause your neighbors to move out of jealousy!!!! Amy my dear,
    SLOWLY DOWN!
I don’t want to see you pass out!
    I give you 5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
The first star cause you’re cute as hell with a winning smile!!!
The second star cause you have a natural eye for design!!
I would have easily thought a pro done your yard!!!
Star 3 because you are so tough!!!
( felt so bad for your injured leg, but
you shook it off like a soldier.)
Note: all the safety advice from your comments were on point!!
Including gloves, glasses and my favorite: KNEE PADS!!!!
Your legs are a masterpiece, don’t damage them.... and take frequent breaks... ( which I never do) and keep sipping water ( every 10 minutes!)
Star 4 cause you are a thrifty shopper!
You chose items that weren’t the cheapest, thereby maintaining excellent curb appeal!! If we try... we don’t have to skimp on elegance while insisting on value.
And the last star cause you are not afraid to do something you have never done!!
Adventurousness is unique characteristic to have!
What I would give to find an adventurous woman. They are rarer particularly since the pandemic.
I saw your channel once before when you were trying to install beautiful door handles in your home about a year ago.
I lost your channel since then, but now that I found you again, I have subscribed and obviously hit like on your vlog.
I’m surprised after reading all your well deserved comments, that there aren’t many more brothers watching you tackle your projects?
You have a naturalness to you that is calming.
    Love your style.
    Don’t change a thing!
    PS
Don’t be so tough on your helper, .... I had 5 sisters growing up and yes they got on my nerves sometimes.... but I would never trade them for a bag of gold!
During the pandemic I stayed home; 14 months )and put in my fence, painted the house, garage (purple) that was my mother’s favorite color. Cleaned out the garage using a large dumpster. Put hanging petunia’s in the back.ect.... I thank God for this moment to catch up on my home, wow!
Now, tomorrow I will continue to prepare
the area around the entrance with weed liner, gravel, then. Sand.
I’m cheating by making my own flagstone by pouring colored cement in molds and in12 hours, they are ready for the front yard! I will make about 150 of them.
I learned much by watching You Tube and like you, I love working with tools.
Don’t know why you didn’t go for the electric hedge trimmers ... a few bucks more, but, saves your strength on those 80 degree days.
As you see, .... I talk toooooo much!!
So, keep up the excellent work,
    ..... and.... please, please
Don’t run your neighbors off by blinking them off your street!!! lol

Some thing I wanted to mention to you, when you were cutting the shrub/bush off to the side by itself and you were using the big clippers, hold them the other way next time (turn them around), that way it’s easier to create a curved shape which is what you were going for. If the clippers are turned around the other way, the way they are shaped naturally will help you to make more of a curved shape on your plant. I don’t know if that makes sense, lol! and then one more thing, I’m sure 100 people in the comment section told you, but an annual does NOT come back every year, those are perennials. An annual will basically last from spring to fall(just one year) and they never come back. Once they are dead, you remove them. Now there are some exceptions to the rule especially since you live in Texas. You will find that some annuals will “winter over” and go into the next year because you live in such a warm climate and it doesn’t snow in Texas.
I hope you don’t think I’m being a know it all, I was just giving you a few tips that I’ve learned along the way. I think your garden turned out freaking awesome and just remember gardening is a major learning process… and you never really stop learning🌻🪴

Amy, you did a great job and the yard looks lovely. I'm 72 and live on 6 acres with a pond and I worked 40 hrs. a week until retirement. I do most of the planting, weeding, mulching you name it myself. My husband does the mowing. In time you may very well learn to love it as gardening should be enjoyable. The more you do it the more you will learn. Laura from Garden Answer is a wonderful source. Keep going and Oh I did raise a family while digging in the dirt. Best to you.

I designed and did my garden by myself. I even built an outdoors kitchen on a budget. You did an outstanding job. A lot of ppl want a beautiful yard but they are not willing to do any heavy lifting or put in any elbow grease., my garden is about 20 years old and it’s always changing. Make sure you take lots of pictures so that you can look back at how it emerged. Good Luck!

Good job, but an Annual plant will only last 1 year. Perennials are the ones that come back every year. So if you've bought an annual it will die when the temperature gets to freezing. If you don't live where it gets super cold then you're golden. You can do anything you put your mind to. Go ahead girl, do yo thing! 🙌🏾

Get some Avon, ‘Skin so Soft’…..greasy/oily. But, it repels bugs. Also, to enjoy being outside run a fan. Bugs are very lightweight & cannot handle wind. Then, you don’t need bug spray. I’ve gardened for years in hot Atlanta. But, I did it early or late. After 12 noon, I went inside & would come back out at 7 pm.

Foxtail Ferns spread a bit ( grow wide ). You could use less of them to give space to spread.
For fertilizer, use worm casting , organic fertilizer. That fert that use will make the plant look good for a short while , but will not enhance your soil.
Soil health is the best and your plants will look better over time.
I do my garden by myself.I have 30 plus fruit trees and they do well.
    Good luck 👍
    Love your garden .
