    The big turning point was when Microsoft started believing that the gaming industry has a future big enough to keep Microsoft competitive with Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple. And then they went "all in on gaming" as Satya Nadella said

    The other thing I don't see a lot of people commenting on is Xbox has a cornerstone of the E sports scene now too. Halo championship series, overwatch league, Call of Duty, Starcraft, Hearthstone, Quake. This was a multilateral move for them in multiple spaces.

      It is because most of the people are in video games but not e-sports and you even hear one of the comments I think Parris made about rolling back on e-sports with Overwatch. Smart move for Microsoft is to roll everything under their MLG branding and have a massive e-sports team supporting everyone and like they were saying basically put on a video game "Super Bowl" every year while supporting all the video game majors throughout the year.

    This was the best podcast about Acti-Blizz deal I listened to. I listen to 10 of them, if I’m not mistaken. I still need to check Gamespot. Snowbike Mike surprised me with professionalism and great discussion organization. He was prepared, divided it into concrete segments, ask good questions and the guests followed in a great manner. Examples: first time I heard, regarding Phil Spencer tweet about Sony and CoD, that it might be an invitation to negotiations. It’s so obvious, why I didn’t think about it? Also the e-sports Olympics - very interesting idea.
    I’m very surprised, but greatly pleased with this podcast. Podcast Unlocked should study this episode. I will listen to Xcast regularly.

    Loved this episode. So many good nuanced takes that really try to see the big picture and look at both the potential good and bad, without falling into common traps of “oh this going to be a greedy monopoly, BAD!” Or “Yay, finally not just COD games every year, good!” Kind of takes that are what most people online are focusing on.
    Personally, cannot wait to see what this will do to the industry as a whole and I am more optimistic and excited about this, wether it means more value to gamers via gamepass or simply pushing the other companies (Sony, Nintendo, etc) to counteract this by providing different experiences and working harder on their own franchises.

  • @KeithEngel
    @KeithEngel Před 2 lety +4

    I just finished watching the Xbox Documentary, and one of the first things that MS kept bringing up about the original Xbox was betting on the future by including the ethernet port as part of the console and the future of online gaming. The innovation of Xbox Live and the now staple aspect of gamers with headphones was not actually the standard it is now. Xbox actually did make that happen with the original Xbox. If we fast forward to 20 years later, this is what I feel MS/Xbox understands. Though we are not fully there yet, just like with ethernet not being fully standard when the first one released, but we are moving to a future were there will no longer be a need for the actual console. Xlcloud is the first step in this direction.
    The guaranteed future of any brand is the first one able to adapt to changes in market as well see where that future is heading. Video games is going the same way as the movie rental business. Netflix got it's start as a DVD rent by mail service, but eventually overtook even Blockbuster who didn't change to the shift in the market nor have enough foresight into the fact that media delivery would change in how people would start watching movies altogether and when they did try to change and adapt, it was too late for them though. I view consoles like Blockbuster were the physical location of going to the rental store is no longer viable and to remain in the old school way of doing things will eventually see you sink ship.
    Currently Nintendo and Sony are still somewhat stuck in the Blockbuster model, while MS is shifting to the Netflix Model, understanding that the future isn't physical, but on delivery and accessibility. Sony is starting to realize they need to diversify more as well, the fact that they are now bringing PS games to PC is the first step in this realization. To many think that this means them trying to entice PC gamers to buy a PS console, but I don't think that is the case, I think it's more about them realizing that the old way of doing console business won't be surviving the future for very much longer. In 15 years, the console won't exist, instead, it will be the Xbox Game App, the Nintendo Game App, and the Sony Game app, and you will have these on your TV, Phone, and PC . Peripheral's and games will be the only thing you will need to buy moving forward, everything else will be a sub to the service that each offer.

    The whole idea of ‘now we have 10,000 extra staff to pay’ I don’t think is really true. The company MS just bought was already paying those people, those individual businesses were already paying the staff and presumably making profit so MS is actually just making more profit. It’s not like all of a sudden activision and blizzard are totally dependent baby companies who can’t do anything without MS’ money, they have games out their making revenue, if MS did nothing with them for the first couple years probably not much would change

    We’re going to take this away from you… my answer to that is it’s not taking it away from you if you never had it to begin with. So new titles even new titles from existing properties like COD, well that was never yours to begin with. You need to come to Xbox and places that support Game Pass.
    You know if the shoe was on the other foot, PlayStation would never allow COD and the rest of the Activision catalog to come to Xbox. So don’t expect these games on PlayStation. And I wouldn’t expect Game Pass to show up on PlayStation. That seems counter intuitive.

Just have all of the legacy maps and modes available to players who want them plus keep Warzone thriving and then do a new story campaign once every four to six years. If they wanted, they could simply add new maps and modes to this "Portal" without needing them to be tied to a yearly story campaign launch.

    One thing I’ve noticed about “game analysts”, is they listen to what the executives say, repeat it ad naseum and look at these moves as validation for their analysis when really they’re just parroting what’s already been said. It’s extremely surface level.
    No one is asking the real questions. Microsoft is banking on GP being the future, data suggests it’s not. What happens if this thing doesn’t scale the way they projected it to? What about Microsoft’s history of busting organization efforts and how that jives with what the employees at AKB want?
    It’s pretty crazy to see how much of an echo chamber we have. Not just at KF but everywhere. Very weird.

      @Str1derNZ Před 2 lety +1

      This data that you are seeing that says GP is not working, is apparently different to the data that Microsoft is basing their decision making on.
      You're spinning a negative narrative from the past, while ignoring the happy studios releasing quality games in the now.
      You talk about echo Chambers, but you can go to any PS channel and hear exactly what you're saying.

      Game pass has 25 million subscribers PlayStation now has 2 million for comparison Xbox is simply showing the industry how it should be done it’s not that surprising Microsoft has always been a software company and Xbox has generally lead the industry when it comes to how to deliver gaming services going all the way back to the original Xbox live and then the 360 being the template for how it’s done today on every gaming platform it’s really hasn’t changed that much since than and that’s a real testament to the vision of the Xbox team at that time

      @Mr8T1 Před 2 lety

      Read what I’m saying. The data I’m alluding to is commercial consumer data that is out there. People play less games for longer periods of time. They also don’t consume games the same way they consume tv and music. There is a role for subscription services to play in our art form going forward but I suspect (as the data suggests) that it will not be THE future but a part of it.

    Minecraft, imho, is the example that proves the rule. There is no Minecraft 2. Minecraft was an existing online service game which had a big community on PlayStation when they bought mojang. They simply didn't remove it from the ps store, and they continued to support it. If there WAS a Minecraft 2, it would be exclusive. COD warzone is the same, so will continue to be sold and supported on PS. The single player portion of new unannounced call of duty sequels will be exclusive (after any preexisting contacts expire). Look at hellblade. HB1 was exclusive to PlayStation, then, xbox bought ninja theory, and HB1 came to xbox and game pass, now, HB2 is exclusive to the xbox platform, along with ALL other NT games, but you can still buy HB1 on ps. After all the acquisitions, not 1 of the studios they acquired has gone on to make or even announce a new game that has released/will release on ps. Not 1. And before anyone cites Minecraft dungeons, that game was made by double eleven, a 2nd party studio.

    I'd like to see yearly COD multiplayer stay multiplat, but then COD campaigns go exclusive and only drop every 2 or 3 years. Plus, it allows COD to become a console showcase.

Maybe in the future that will change, but I wouldn’t suggest someone buy a console on the potential of future great games. 20:00 Phil didn't say that, he said nothing about publishing future games. he said they will honor "currently existing" agreements & won't be taking anything away from the "currently existing" communities on those consoles. you could easily read that as Warzone & Vanguard won't get delisted from PS4/PS5 but the next COD proper or whatever battle royale that comes after Warzone, there are no guarantees that Sony will get those. not unlike how Elder Scrolls Online will stay on playstation but Elder Scrolls 6 is exclusive.

    Call of Duty must go F2P now so its available on ALL platforms and the F2P model also won't split the CoD community - either because of Platform choice (PS5 vs Game Pass) or by generations (CoD2022 vs CoD2023). They can update it 'regularly' to maybe jump between Eras (WW2, Modern etc) just like Warzone. This doesn't split the community which is what MS want so it seems inevitable that Multi player CoD will be F2P so that no-one is left out - no barrier to play (free), no split community by platform choice etc. The only thing that 'makes' sense is to have a 'live service' Free Online MP CoD that has seasons, regular refreshes etc like Warzone rather than 'make' new games every 'year' or 'two' that are sold on Sony's store making Sony more money as the Platform holder and retailer than Xbox as IP owner, Developer and Publisher.
    Maybe Raven will take on CoD F2P Online. That would free up the other devs to make the games they want. Treyarch could make a new Zombies game without having to tie it in to CoD (WW2 Nazi's) so create their 'new' IP for Xbox. Infinity Ward may want to try a 3rd Person Action Adventure to break away from First Person CoD, High Moon could opt to do something with their Darkwatch IP, Sledgehammer may have a new IP they'd like to make, Beenox could make a Kart Racer/Smash Bros/Party game with characters from Spyro, Crash, Banjo, Conker, Psychonauts, Halo, Doom, Quake, Hexen, Perfect Dark, CoD, Warcraft, Skyrim, Fallout, Dishonoured, Fable, Hellblade, Gears of War etc etc ALL on GAME PASS platforms EXCLUSIVELY!.
    CoD MP/Warzone will 'remain' in a F2P model and Sony will still get 'revenue' from Battle Pass, CoD Points sales etc, still get the big name Multi-player, still support those Communities etc etc so from that perspective, Online CoD will remain on PS. It doesn't make sense to split the community or try and 'force' them to switch platforms. However, they don't want to tie up all those developers making games that release on other platforms.
    They 'NEED' at least 12 big New games every year to get people to subscribe to Game Pass and stay subscribed for the 'next' month's big game. Ideally, they want their 'own' studio's making those games as its the most 'lucrative' option but they also have Xbox Publishing for 3rd Party Studio's and then if there are still gaps, they have to go to 3rd party publishers to try and negotiate a deal to release on Game Pass but ideally, they want their studio's all making their own games that people WANT to Play (critically acclaimed and/or high player acclaim) so they not only Subscribe, but stay subscribed! They may also use CoD, Crash, Doom, Wolfenstein, Elder Scrolls etc etc to get Game Pass on Playstation too and get Sony's 'Spartacus' and their games on Xbox -even if they are streaming only @1080/60 on their 'rivals' hardware...

      COD love em or hate em makes billions each year with current model, why on earth would they go f2p?

    • @BAMozzy69
      @BAMozzy69 Před 2 lety

      @@reach5589 Because its not sustainable and burning out developers, splits the community every year between those on last years and those on this years and being driven into the ground by Activision. That's NOT MS's way and the F2P model can also be 'lucrative' with Battle Pass seasons, CoD points to buy Cosmetics etc etc. Most of the MP's nowadays are 'F2P' which isn't helping the perceived 'value' of CoD/BF etc. Warzone is bigger than CoD.
      The whole point of 'Game Pass' is to not measure a games success by its commercial success. Putting CoD on Game Pass isn't going to help sales and as the 'retailer' and platform holder, Sony make more money from sales of Games through their store than MS would as Publisher/developer.
      MS wants to grow Game Pass and 'keep' people subscribed every month and putting CoD out to 'buy' on PS5 every year, taking up multiple studio's and staff to crunch out a 'new' game doesn't make ANY sense to MS. They'd rather have 'Billions' each year because of more Subscribers on Game Pass and add to that from 'sales' of Battle Pass/CoD points in Warzone/F2P MP and the fact that being 'F2P' may bring many more players into CoD MP because there is NO barrier to 'entry', this could end up benefiting the CoD Community, MS and Sony. Sony 'could' lose ALL revenue from CoD, the CoD community would be split up by those on older games vs the new, split by platform (old Activision Cod on PS5 vs new Xbox CoD on Game Pass) and therefore it makes much more sense to go F2P and get money from ALL platforms. $15-$20 Battle Pass for 'each' of a 3month season a year would be about the 'same' as selling a 'new' game every year anyway!!!

    • @R17759
      @R17759 Před 2 lety

      The Modern Warfare setting should just become the Call of Duty multiplayer game alongside Warzone. Still make campaigns and zombie additions in whatever era you want, but just focus on making a single multiplayer experience and refining/adding to it over time. These games already operate as free to play by selling a battle pass and cosmetics so I would like to see the yearly $60 releases stop sooner rather than later.

    • @BAMozzy69
      @BAMozzy69 Před 2 lety

      @@R17759 Exactly - That's how Call of Duty will be - just the Multi-player suite that gets new content, maps etc with seasons and 'rotations' alongside Warzone.
      That won't split the community because every CoD gamer has access to the MP and Warzone. F2P also means everyone can play, not just those who can buy too so CoD name will be 'EVERYWHERE' which everyone will know is owned by MS so win for them.
      There won't be annual CoD releases splitting the community between those who buy the latest and those stuck on the last. CoD Online will be F2P indefinitely.
      Microsoft will want to keep the entire CoD Community happy and that they will ALL get the same updates, same new maps etc at the same time. Maybe even do some 'Retro/Portal' type mode or Halo:MCC of all the CoD Multi-players in a CoD Online Hub that includes the MP Suite & Warzone)
      Apart from whatever team takes on this, maybe even form a team from IW, Treyarch etc to be the 'CoD' online Studio focussed solely on 'CoD' online. But the other studios will make whatever games they want to and for Game Pass ONLY platforms.
      MS wants every studio they can working on their own games exclusively for Xbox. They won't make a new 'CoD' Multi-player because they have F2P CoD Multi-player. They may make some CoD SP if a studio wants to or use the CoD name to spin off into a different genre maybe arcade flight fighter (CoD: Battle of Britain), 3rd Person Co-op Stealth game (CoD:SAS) or whatever they want. CoD MP/Warzone are still on PS to play...
