  • The guys take the Audi S5 for a drive in the snow in this third and final part of our Sports Coupes comparison. And in the final discussion, how well will the upstart Cadillac CTS fair against this Audi and the BMW 335is?

    I noticed the 335i tested was a manual, but the S5 was automatic. Although the balance of the cars is a factor, I suspect the automatic transmission is largely responsible for the lack of feel reported in the review. I'm considering an S5 and if I take the plunge, it will certainly be a manual for that reason.

    I love my 2010 S5 6MT. My only questions for the "drivers" in the comment section bashing the S5 for feeling "numb" and "un-involving"... Have you driven one with the upgraded rear differential and Drive Select? It becomes 2 different cars. "Comfort" feels nice and easy. "Dynamic" transforms it into a beast. It's incredible.
    99% of my driving is on everyday commutes on public roads. For this purpose, there are few cars on the road better. Luxury and power in exceptional form.
    If your JOB is to race on the track, this is not the suit you wear to your office.
    This is the suit that destroys 90% of the competition it faces every day, but doesn't have to scuff its cufflinks demolishing the douche in the R/T next to you.
    It's Duane "The Rock" Johnson in a well tailored suit.

    The Audi just needs simple software tunning. You can reprogram its AWD system for more oversteer(It comes with very conservative and safe settings out of a factory, even in dynamic mode) and the V6 version can be chiptuned to 400+ HP, then it'll be the best, but you may lose warranty.

    I've always had my eye on the 335 and the S5. I only buy used vehicles, so have been waiting for prices to come down. I also research the crap out of cars before I buy them and am a bit obsessive. Winner for me is the S5 for styling, interior fit and finish, and reliability. From everything I have read on forums, BMW's turbo on the 335 is absolute crap with wastegate issues and problems with the high-pressure fuel pump. Replacing the turbo is $7k. Google search "335 turbo issues" and you'll see search result after search result for problems, class-action lawsuits, etc.. Also, resell value for the 335 is much lower than the S5. You can buy a 2009 335i under $20k off a dealer lot. S5's are about $30k.

      Allen Walker I'm in the same boat Allen. All ways wanted a 335ix. After hours of research, and a few long test drives. I'm going to buy a 2012 Audi S5. The BMW is a great car, and a hell of a lot of fun to drive but overall there really isn't a doubt on the choice. S5.

    • @williamharrington6952
      @williamharrington6952 Před 9 lety +1

      Allen Walker the turbos are not the issue with those cars...its the high pressure fuel pump that is the problem. they are cheap to replace and are covered under warranty for like 120k miles

    • @HampshireElite5
      @HampshireElite5 Před 9 lety

      Get the N55 single turbo and all those problems are gone. Its really a fantastic car, almost no turbo lag. The car looks great and it handles like a dream. The only downside its the Audi had better interior. But i like the basic interior of BMWs, its all preference there

    • @allenwalker4816
      @allenwalker4816 Před 9 lety

      William Harrington Eh, the Internets seems to think there is a problem with the turbos. Also, when I was looking around for used 335's, "Rebuilt Turbo" was common in ads. I neither have access to all the raw data, nor am I trained actuary. It was just something I saw on the boards, in ads and other online sources. Same thing with the fuel pump. Don't know how hard it is to replace in a 335. I upgraded my fuel pump in my 4runner to push more gas to my supercharger and it wasn't that big a deal, even though the fuel pump wasn't exactly a $50 part. Labor wasn't too bad. Just a six pack of beer.

It's ok as I said, but if you're a tall driver, forget about the person behind you unless they are very short. It's not as bad as the 911 the seats are actually useful just wouldn't imagine having to drive that everyday with more than 2 people, like every other coupe it's a compromise of look before practicality.

    It doesn’t matter who designed the car - hallmarks of good designers include the ability to sustain the ‘flavor’ of a particular marque. Great designers do not design for themselves or for their national heritage.

    @broncovinnie - Point taken, but we think it depends on perspective here. Our approach was to gather the three highest models just under the fire-breathing M3, CTS-V, and RS5 - and that means these three cars. The A5 would have been underpowered in this company and wouldn't have been the best Audi offers underneath the RS5. And while the S5 we drove was far more money than the CTS, it is possible to get them cheaper and close to the 335is and the CTS in price.

    @jconte29 - Industry wide, car journalists generally regard Audi for their interior quality - so we are not alone. That doesn't mean Audi's interiors are fault-less. Yes, Merc does some nice interior work, but they also have their share of mis-steps. Also note the fact that when Ford & Dodge decided to finally improve their interiors they publicly set Audi (not Merc) as their target.

  • @vlurton

    @wilstave If you're referring to the 5th gear 335i vs S5, the BMW won by 6 hundredths of a second, not a "blows this out of the water" performance. But let put things into prospective, if you load up a 335i with X drive, nav and upgraded sound system you're at $59k vs $62k for the S5. If you load up the 335is the price is the same as the S5 but without all wheel drive. The Audi has a more refined interior & exterior and has more power but needs better steering feel. The 335 needs updating.

  • @EverydayDriver

    K, they said wait a few years to look at the 335is....here we are! Wonder how the ATS stacks up though, sounds like Caddie has the weight, engine and handling worked out, but the shifter needs work.

    i dont know what your talking about my dad has an s5 2010 stick shift and that thing is glued to the ground. he has a stick shift and it seems to jump off the line faster than any other sports car were next to. the turning on it is incredible it litterilly feels like your glued to the ground the way if takes conners. maybe its cause you were in a auto.

    @therealmichaelw I'm sure they could get the cars. Though with the TT RS coming to the US I wonder what the guys would think of that? Since the S5 is basically a coupe, would the TT RS be the better buy with the Turbo I5.

  • @VivsIs1
    @VivsIs1 Před 11 lety

    I feel like you guys would both pick the RS5 which is based on an engine of a different platform. Its a new version of the R8 engine. (NO it is NOT the R8 engine!!!) That engine is derived from what audi learned from the R8 and I feel like you guys would love that.

  • @mstSean

    @rrt1991 starting prices are M3 (58k) CTS-V (63k) S5 (53k) but the RS5 will be a whopping 71k when it arrives stateside. The problem is that Audi places its S line below the M line in price and then its RS line way above.

    The styling is waaaaay too conservative for me... give me something that says "HEY, I'm an Audi & I cost $60,000!" I am in no way, shape or form a Honda fan but I think the 2016 Honda Accord Sport coupe looks the part of what this Audi should turn its direction towards without over-doing it. The Audi has that 'cookie-cutter' styling the whole VAG has and needs to have its own identity! Just sayin...

    @NoGoodJim The M5 will beat the S5 in every performance category and it's also $10k to $12k more money. The S5 is not a pure sports car, it's a GT. I've got one and it's a WONDERFUL highway car. I've had 3 BMWs and I really like this one best. I do wish that it had the same feel at the steering wheel as my older 3 series cars but the power and all wheel drive definitely make up for the deficiency. Also the S5's wheel feels better at higher speeds, but it's not as good as the BMW's wheel.

    I'm in the uk and in winter, your BM won't be driving anywhere in the snow, my '06 325i M sport would not drive in the slightest of snow, it hasn't even settled and you could see the road through the snow, but nope, bmw not going anywhere, turned traction control off and that helped but in the end i had to abandon it, it slid into the camber of the road to the gutter and couldn't get out. next i bought an '06, 2.7 tdi Quattro S line. snow? what snow! fantastic, Audi forever now
