Ironically I think Giant's Deep is by FAR the calmest planet, it feels... gentle, despite its immense forces of nature
Apart form timber hearth it's certainly the "safest" for new flyers. They use the water as a giant mattress to catch any speeding ships. And the only things that can really kill you is gravity. There's plants everywhere for oxygen.
Giant's deep was actually the very first planet I went to in Outer Wilds, and bro the cyclone's sending me into space absolutely ROCKED me
Me too. It’s my favorite base game location
But remember: Giant's Deep is not Dark Bramble. Then everything seems nicer
The physics of space are actually quite simple. You don't get flung out because you are going just as fast as the cannon. In relation to each other you both aren't moving, everything else is whipping around. Think of it that way... you have a point you are anchored to, then everything else is zooming, so the cannon is still, but giant's deep is moving. Then when to anchor to a planet, the planet is still and the cannon is moving.
Relativity is weird once you get used to it. Woth enough self-esteem you will never move again. You move the universe around you until where you want to go comes to you.
@@CatOnACell Actually funny you say that... fun fact about this game, the player doesn't move at all, it's the map that moves around you. They had to do this to get around floating point errors. Outer Wilds is a wonder, not just in it's story, but the design too.
@@ainadagurmawth6616 this is also true for any game, if you get enough into graphics. like, rotating your camera actually just rotates the world around you, and walking forwards just moves the world backwards. graphics and sound works on a fixed co-ordinate system, while graphics is eventually based on the pixels of your screen: x is horizontal pixels, y is vertical pixels, and z is stored in the depth buffer to determine for other pixels of other objects whether to display them or not.
so outer wilds doing this for its physics engine too just means that it doesn't have to be done later, leading to more accurate graphics and physics :)
@@ThatJay283 I don't know any game other than Outer Wilds that keeps the player at the center of the universe. Other engines just move the player, and have a rendering camera attached to their head, which projects and renders the world from it's point of view every frame. Outer Wilds keep the player and his camera at (0,0,0) coords, and actually move the world's coords in the opposite direction of player's "movement". But in the end, isnce both techniques are identical except those rounding errors in the result you can't tell. You can get rounding errors in Outer Wilds by going far awway from the solar system, that place the system so far that IT beging to glitch via those errors, while the player is perfectly still. As for gravity - if you move sideways just fast enough outside ofd atmosphere that would slow you back down, you will remain in freefall in orbit, as the gravity will just keep bending your direction into a circle around the planet. Slow down and you fall into it, or speed up and get flung into space. As long as you keep close to the cannon (or anything else) that is in orbit, then you are in orbit as well. All masses get accelerated by gravity the same. Also the gravity is strongest at the surface, when you go below, it will drop until it zeroes out at the center (zero-g cave, dark bramble's entire interior, and a couple of other planet's cores) because the planet's mass is all around you pulling on you in all directions that cancel out.
@@seekvapes9641 idk about game engines, but the graphics APIs themselves (OpenGL, Vulkan, DirectX, Metal, etc) all work on a fixed co-ordinate system where the players camera is at (0, 0, 0). all games either have to convert their coordinate systems to be more camera centric at some point down their graphics/audio pipeline, but it's nice knowing that outer wilds doesn't.
You got stuck that one time, because your ship landed close to a piece of floor that has it’s own gravity
25:39 LOL, Gabro's just there still chillin playing his flute, not the LEAST bit bothered that he's been picked up, lifted into space, floated out of his hammock, dropped back down, and thrown into the ocean. All the while just toodlin' away :')
all the hearthians use they/them btw
"what's stopping me from getting flung out the second I leave"
the only forces acting on you are the gravity from the sun (only strong enough to keep you in effectively the same orbit around as Giant's Deep), the gravity of Giant's Deep (which you are orbiting around along side the Orbital Probe Cannon (OPC)), and your jetpack. You're in a vacuum so you you don't have to worry about drag slowing you down. unless you burn really hard in one direction, there quite simply isn't any other force that could send you flying off. Just lock onto the Probe Cannon piece (or anything else you don't want to get too far away from while in space) and make sure the number showing you speed doesn't go too far into the negative, and you won't careen off into space.
the thing to remember, the OPC is zooming around Giant's Deep in orbit, but to board it, you necessarily have to match it's velocity and orbit Giant's Deep at the same or a similar speed yourself, and that momentum doesn't randomly change when you get a couple feet away from it (unless you get hit by a rock or use your jetpack).
9:49 Excellent use of the Little Scout! Chert and Tektite would approve 😁
17:17 "Am I not allowed you use my jetpack here?" The jetpack is part of your suit - you can't use it if you haven't put it on! It does make re-visiting places in the village much faster though.
28:58 Gabbro's quantum poem was the thing you found in the Quantum Grove on Timber Hearth in episode 1, about 1 hour 11 minutes in.
An incredibly fun lets play. Your emotional reactions to fear and ignorance of newtonian physics causing you to crash spectacularly make watching this entertaining!
wow you handled the ocean really well Butch. Proud of you
gabbro feels like the kinda hearthian that would love the time loop because it gives them infinite weed
oh, the musical cue for the sun going supernova starting RIGHT as you got in the water is a whole other level of cosmic cruelty lol
That last "landing" was phenomenal.
lmao the ship crash at the end was in the middle of the village. Congratulations, you've added +1 to your personal Hearthian fires started count. Slate would be pleased. Mayor Rutile would be displeased.
One of the best things about the Outer Wilds community is the collective sense of letting new players experience it for themselves without ANY spoilers. When I first played the game for myself I got confused about what I was actually supposed to do with it and felt a bit like being thrown into a sandbox, like I didn't understand the objective. So I Googled it to try and figure it out.
I found a post I think was on the reddit for Outer Wilds that just said its a mystery game - you're trying to solve the mystery. If you've played any amount of the game then you know about the Nomai, the time loop, and the sun exploding, so they then went on to add that if you get stuck or confused about what to do then you should try answering the why of those things (why is the sun exploding, why is there a time loop, what were the Nomai doing, etc.) in order to progress. It was so helpful and didn't spoil a thing that I hadn't already figured out for myself within an hour of playtime.
Well, at least he crashed into the river, right next to the water fall, so putting that fire out might have been a bit easier than usual. But Spinel probably had an awful time until the sun exploded.
It's not 0G in the cyclone, it's 0G when you are in free fall - the two are equivalent under gallilean relativity.
45:34 basically, you're going the same speed and direction and being acted on by same forces. In space with no atmosphere you're just gonna keep doing the same thing.
You're both circling giants deep in the same way
the reason you dont get flung out of the probe cannon when leaving it is because you and it are both in the same inertial reference frame, i.e. you and it are moving together at the same speed orbiting giants deep so it doesn't matter if you move outside of or away from the probe cannon because you are orbiting giants deep too with the cannon, basically from your point of view/reference frame the probe cannon is not moving. Its like how if you're in a plane and get out of your seat and stand in the aisle you dont immediately fly backwards into the back of the plane and die, the plane accelerated you up to its speed so even though it feels as if you're not moving(because relative to the plane you aren't), relative to the ground you are moving the same speed as the plane. Here you flew your ship into orbit around giants deep matching velocity with the probe cannon so unless you slow yourself down your not going to leave giants deeps orbit just by going outside of the probe cannon, like how astronauts dont fly away from the ISS at like 10000mph once they go outside
one explanation that I really like about orbiting things, is something falling towards something but going so fast in one direction that it misses every time
I love how he just had an existential crisis at the end there without even noticing.
I love these videos man. Your voice is pleasant to listen to and I appreciate the vulnerability. I've been wanting you to play this because I knew you'd appreciate it lol, this playthrough is great so far
"but earth has atmosphere, which in my head protects me"
its the opposite :P in space there is no wind to push you around
I was so right in saying your Outer Wilds Playthrough will feel like the Subnautica one.
So awesome. Having a lot of fun watching!
Maybe its good to have a list of things youve seen and told yourself youll check it later but forgot:
Sun station
Sounthern observatory on brittle
Tower of quantuum knowledge
Black hole forge and a floor of hanging city
The interloper
The vessel said theres more to explore here (you blew up before you could explore)
Did i miss anything?
This is a great!
The ships computer actually does it automatically too.
Also the quantum signals
Keep up with the great videos, bro. I'm loving this series.
Just a tip, when reading in the game the time stops, unless the sun is just about to explode, so don't worry about reading things fast when the sun is not critical.
Gabbro is my favorite. Giant’s deep was the first planet I visited. The awe I experienced while being tossed around the water/cyclones/islands made me realize this wasn’t a normal game.
This turned very philosophical and I love it!
7:18 excuse me, I liked it as soon as I opened it. But yes, I am a sadist
To answer your question about space physics around 45:00
In one word: Gravity.
The reason you don't YEET off into space the second you leave (for example) the ISS is the gravity of Earth. The same force that keeps the ISS in a (more or less) stable orbit will keep your body in the same orbit. Because gravity affects all things equally, regardless of mass.
If you are on the same Orbit as the Orbital Probe cannon, that is at the same altitude above Giant's Deep, and the same velocity (speed and direction), you will STAY on the same Orbit as the Orbital Probe cannon, because there's nothing there to change your velocity, except for your own Jetpack. Which you obviously have full control over. That's why it's "safe" to leave the Station through any of it's openings.
The same gravity also keeps our Moon from flying off, by the way. And the Moon's gravity causes the tides on Earth. So much for "there is no gravity in Space" as most people think...
On a related note: it's actually easier to fling something out to Jupiter than it is to have it fall into the sun. Because gravity and orbital mechanics are MUCH less intuitive than simply "there is no gravity in space" (GODS I hate that trope)
It took me an embarrassing amount of time to figure out you had to swim under the island. I kept trying to Zero G fly underneath it while it was in space. Many hard landings..
Well done Butch.
Fun fact. The game doesn’t really start until the statue sees you. The volcano doesn’t erupt, brittle hollow doesn’t fall apart, the hourglass twins don’t do the sand thing, and the sun won’t explode.
Saving this video to watch on the weekend with a bag of popcorn, but liking and commenting today to appease to the algorithm gods. 🙏
Amazing as usual Butch!
about skipping things, one thing i love about this game is when you accidentally skip lore, it will tell you :)
Giants Deep was the first planet i went to, and when i entered the atmosphere and saw the cyclones and the water and the whole sight, my jaw hit the floor. There's something so majestic and terrible about it.
The memory and time thing makes me think of "Steins;Gate", an anime/graphic novel where the protagonists figure out first how to send text messages into the past, then memories. Sending the texts would change the present(Only one person had the memory of before the changes happened), implying that you are effectively changing the past. However, when they figured out how to send memories, it was like time travel. I think that being on the sending side, aka not the one on the receiving side, is just the act of re-writing history. Being on the receiving side, the one to obtain the memories, would seem like time travel because you are receiving a signal from the future, and that signal is the memories that could happen. But then, on the receiving side, you are obtaining something that doesn't exists yet, a 'possible' future. An as of yet unobserved future. Starting to sound like quantum physics...
Anyways, cool as it is to ponder, the end result is the same as the Nomai said, as the mere act of having sent/received the memories will alter the present/future. Best just to be like Gabro and don't think about it too hard, rather live in the moment.
I had a great time watching this. Giants deep is both scary and wonderful. This planet was super stressful, but worth the exploration. I'm glad to see you're still enjoying the journey!
Was just about to hop on overwatch before i saw that you had posted, thank you butch for saving me from destroying my computer🙏
So true though.
From bad OW to good OW 👍
@@cosmiccampfire2983 thats clever😂
I've,been looking your videos since april 2023 with the subnautica serie, one of my favorites of all time, and a year later I'm watching you screaming in a only-ocean game once again, this might sound sadic but I couldn't be happier!
well this isnt an ocean only game
bro im like actively excited for every new episode lol, this playthrough got me hooked
Absolutely love this series
Can only like once, never played this game and never will but ive followed the story well through Butch
31:03 I'm pretty sure you have managed to park your ship sideways on the "Gravity Plating" so the ship and you keep being pulled towards it.
I was just thinking about your Outer Wild vids and there you are! : D ❤
I love this game to this day. I literally never found the vessel so I'm excited to see more of that!
Giants deep was the first planet I ever landed on and I have never picked up this game since 😂 though now that I watch this, I would’ve NEVER been able to make it through dark bramble
loving the series!
Haha, sorry Butch. But I enjoy watching you deal with water as much as my friends and family look forward to me getting into spider areas 😅
Space physics is truly crazy stuff. It melted my brain a little to learn how "orbits" truly work. The ISS, for example, orbits Earth. But it's not like it's just happily floating along up there. The ISS is actually still extremely affected by Earth's gravity, it's just falling SIDEWAYS at 18,000 mph to counteract that. That momentum is pushing it away from Earth, just as much as Earth's gravity is pulling back on it, and this balance allows it to orbit the planet 250 miles up. Falling sideways at 18,000 mph. Ludicrous
Well, that's how all orbits work.
@@Glinkis Yeah, of course. I'm just saying the actual physics of it were surprising to me.
there a option in the menu, it freeze time when you reading
You can do it! I promise it's worth it!
You did good with the orbital rendezvous and spacewalk. If you want to learn about why orbits do what they do, Kerbal Space Program helped me immensely because its simulation lets you do the hands on maneuvering and see the consequences short and long term.
5:30
Hate to break it to you, but "take" is also a euphemism.
Love your videos!
There's really no such thing as "being sucked in by a planet" when you're orbiting it. You need to deliberately apply force to cancel the orbit to land. Even then, you're technically still in an orbit, just one that coincides with the planet's body.
Butch forever 💟
Giant’s deep time!
Ahh shit here we go again
Yes, what a nightmare. An ocean planet without a reef or shoreline to make rideable waves? It's a sick joke.
Yo man what's good with you I am good and I am liking the series
Bruh has had "engage auto-pilot" on his screen for like 6 hours and still speeds directly into planets, or just hurtles past them. At least try it. You haven't once this whole run. It approaches your target, slows down, then matches velocity, putting you into a stationary orbit so you can manually land. Just be mindful that the auto-pilot does not account for the sun.
Cool
Hey butch there's an old game called prey you should try it
After Subnautica, I knew this was the perfect game for you ^^
(sorry)
Please try alien isolation!!
Yo wait he finally understood the end times music? Real?
tricked us..
👇 if butch should play grounded next
comment for the algorithm :)
Tomato pressed like.Tomato likes if Butch suffers. 🤣
gaming(real)
Subnautica 3
Bro I love watching you get a good scare but the scream last episode was not in accordance with your name. I nearly wet myself laughing bro.
Day 6 of asking Butch to play alien isolation 🙏
First
Bro, there’s stars when the cyclone goes over because you’re in space, the cyclone sucks you into space and then you come back down. I know you pretend to be a bit dumb dumb for entertainment but sometimes it’s a bit too much and you make me pick my 60inch TV up and shake it. Also the physics of inertia are simple to understand, you know there’s no reason to believe you’d get sucked out into space by going outside of the station while you’re in zero G, it’s the same conditions inside as outside, doesn’t matter how fast it’s moving you’re moving with it, but of course, you know this, just saying, the script is getting a bit unbelievable imo.
Did you watch the rest before making this stupid comment? He figures it out. No need to be rude. Not everyone knows space physics.
Dude, all you had to do was watch 5 more mins after this point to see he figures it out... I mean a planet with tornados that shoot islands into space is kind of wild, so I get why he didn't figure it out off the rip. If you get this upset just from someone's reaction to a game: you have a problem and you should seek mental help immediately.
First
