Scared of soldering, more of a mechanic than a plumber myself. I appreciate the video and equally the comments of all you EXPERIENCED plumbers. So hard to weed out manufacturer reps infecting time tried practices with bogus low probability outcomes to pressure and scare some to buy their product wether it be a good temporary fix or possible long term solutions.
Last year I watched all the Tile Master videos. I am a 68 yr. old female and I got up the nerve to shred my bathroom to the studs and do everything myself. It took a long time for me to do, but thanks to the TM I have received so-o-o many compliments on how well it turned out. Without you Tile Master and your VERY explicit videos I could not have done it. THANK YOU !!!! THANK YOU !!! THANK YOU !!!
You did it yourself? GOOD FOR YOU! I'm a 60 yo male, with no plumbing experience either. So if you "got up the nerve to shred ..." , so can I.
+dvddiva S.L.S Just read your post and I am a 48 year old female doing the same! These videos have been super helpful!
I'm I good plumber please call me if you have any questions
dvddiva S.L.S Good show!
Good for you,you should be very proud of yourself and your project.
I haven't installed a shower valve in 25 years. Doing one soon for a bathroom remodel. Thank you for the update.
Dear Sir, I'm not a US or a GB resident (I'm not sure about the origin of this video), and I'm not criticizing anything here just ofer some people to be open mineded.
I use in my home the Pex system for the last 30 years, and never had a problem.
BTW, the Pex pipe is made from Aluminum alloy and protected by inner and outer pvc layers.
However, its not about the material that i'm talking here, its about the system.
Today they improved the system to a quick push fittings connection.
Heat the female portion, refrain from shooting flame into joint. When you see solder come around fitting you have applied enough solder. No need to repeatedly apply solder around smaller fittings.
i have tackled minor plumbing jobs so far and i am going to dive into this tomorrow after watching your video. Thanks for the great video!
I do agree. Nice video. Now I feel confident enough to do my bathroom.
Glad I watched your video. I'm a beginner AND I ALMOST SOLDERED THE FITTING WITH THE CARTRIDGE inside the valve case.
I worked for two different plumbing companies as an apprentice and something I noticed between the two is that one did the job right and the other got the job done... in the end if there's no leaks I guess that's all that matters... seeing this video noticed the guy had a few flaws but overall the job's done with no hiccups. This video is mostly focus for ppl to encourage themselves on doing the work on their own if they're not plumbers and dnt want to spend a fortune so dnt expect excellence.
some people don't like you share those videos but as people we learnt
Delta is the best..I installed a Moen.."Two months" later, where the screw in adapters went into the valve body ..a hairline crack and a leak developed.. Luckily I was busy with other projects, so it wasn't tiled over yet...Always get solder in connections...If you get an inferior valve casting ...It might crack...but not right away .How often is a valve body pressurized for 2 months and then it leaks..so glad it was still accessible..
The cold water line should have been different. Interesting how you put everything together first. That’s a good idea
Very informative and done professionally. Also explanation was very clear and concise. 5 stars!!
You do very nice work and can tell you take great pride. Thanks for the video
Yes you that's the first things people want replaced, also as time goes by the steam's for those type of showers are becoming scarce also might want to consider replacing that galvanized for copper.
Thanks very much for sharing your expertise. I am watching all your other videos as well. This is really helping me in redoing my master bath! Again thanks!
New not always means better. Lets wait and see how new products will work overtime.
You want cheap - go with new stuff...
You want safe and solid - use copper....
When u use pex you loose pressure. 1/2 inch copper best way to go. Do a test. use pex half inch and use half inch copper and watch how the water comes out of shower head. or hose spicket. do the test you'll know exactly what I'm talking about nice vid
You'll lose volume, not pressure. The two are not the same.
No, you don't, I have been a plumbing contractor for almost 40 years. I have repiped many houses and have great WP. Bring in a 1" pex cold line and you will have a lot of volume with it too. Also, the pressure is whatever the pressure you have out at the curb will be the same at the house.
'
In fact, introducing constriction RAISES the pressure.
if you dont want to redo the tile on the wall moen makes whats called a renovator plate that allows you to cut a hole where your existing valve is, replace with the new on and it covers the hole, it fits on any moentrol or possetemp model shower valves
Great idea to make those plugs to test everything. I’m going to do that today.
Good video!! Always love a challenge provided by the prior rough plumber
Incorrect soldering procedure. Valve body itself should be heated more than the pipe So the solder is drawn into the joint. Solder Flows in the direction of the heat.
And how he ran the cold supply , totally in the way of the bath spout , which don’t have any support for he didn’t use the right 90, nor backing ,But is ok ImAke a lot of money fixing this kind of handy man jobs , it does suck for the homeowner tho,but they did choose not to get an actual plumber to begin with eh?
@@mariomarionetas4445 I’m in the restoration ( water damage) industry. This guy is my hero 😂
Thanx Tilemaster - enjoyed the video! Also appreciate your videos on your tile work, they are excellent and very detailed!
I like the fact that you are very conscientious about cleaning and fluxing the shower valve and pipe thoroughly. I also like the fact that you tried to avoid burning the wall behind the shower control. But what I don't understand is why you didn't make use of the threads on the shower valve.
+PanamaSticks the threads are for attaching galvanized pipe with a coupling, not for copper
+PhoohPhah Thank you, and GOOD JOB!
Awesome job. Really helped me with my future projects. So clean too!
I installed a delta shower and did the usual water leak test. Two hours later a small leak appeared but there was nothing wrong with the solder joints. The brass casting itself was defective and was weeping slowly and had to be torn apart and returned. What a pain!
Thank You for taking the time to share your knowledge, much appreciated.
when you solder you have to bring your heat around to both sides of the fitting so it pulls in evenly also air chambers should be installed to reduce water hamer.
Shouldn't you have a protective matt at the back there in case of fire?
thanks for taking the time and making this video. great job .
sometimes a aluminum heat shield is good prior to soldering to keep from burning sub floor.
@gblueslover2 Those fittings are code approved even if you don't have any access point (in most locations). Not long ago the different MANUFACTURERS had disclaimers that they shouldn't be concealed.Things might have changed but still don't fully trust them and they are ridiculously expensive!
Very well done and explained. Thanks keep up with the good work
Great video good luck with your company....greetings from Ireland
Question:dont the inlet pipes have to be extended with 3/4 pipe and a T? To absorb the water hit when you close the valve?
The comments on your soldering technique are correct. Practice and try another video. Also, you should usr a de-burring tool to remove the burr and return the pipe to full bore.
Thank you for the great video! Very informative and you explained the process very well.
Good teacher
Wow! That`s great! There are lot of vital tips! One of them- to remove all the plastic parts! I guess it was actual 5-7 years ago, but now the majority of mixers have only threaded conenctions for modern types of plumbing materials. But I like copper and I want connect a modern threaded mixer with my existed copper pipe line. Is there any convenient technology for doing this (with no copper to PEX adaptors), please? Thank you
Very good video. Well explained. Thanks for sharing
very thorough. found what I needed. Thanks.
thank you so much for your video it's very helpful
Nice video, but you forgot to install water hammer arrestor. A severe shock can occur in the residential piping system, especially when excessive water pressures are involved. Most of the premature failures of piping, hot water storage heaters, home laundry machines, automatic control valves and flush tanks or valves, may be attributed to shock caused by quick closure valves. Properly sized water hammer arresters should be installed on the hot and cold water supply piping to that fixture, equipment or apparatus wherein shock can be produced.
Thanks boss. I was looking how to install shower plumbing and wasn't even thinking about a water hammer resistor. Huge props, cheers.
Its not code, unless you are using PEX.
Most plumbers just Tee off the supply lines and run 2' up, creating an air cushion.
I noticed the you notched the 2x4 to accommodate the piping. What saw was used to do this? I have to make a similar cut.
EXCELLENT INSTRUCTION VIDEO!!!.....well done !!
I think copper is still used because its very ductile and can put up with the constant temerature changes that house water will produce
That shower mixer looked to have threads on the 3 connections so I would have expected to use CROX nuts. By soldering this if you need to replace it later the soldered connection, with all the gib in place etc, will be very difficult to work with. A crox nut will be easy by comparison.
I didn't see a strap on the cold water at the spout area...perhaps you should have taken the cold water up further to the right of the spout as pictured...
Thanks for the help
Do you replace the valve most of the time when remodeling shower...I will be getting my shower redone because it leaks (60 year old mud install) Should I change it to a single handle--hadn't really thought about the valve (just the non-stop leak) Advice? Thanks for sharing I really appreciate you taking the time to educate us...!
pex has never had any problems i think your refering to polybutylene that had all the problems. and pex is way easier to worth with and cheaper labor and material wise
Very informative, thank you! Keep up the good work.
It's a good idea to keep your hands off the pipe after you clean it cause oils from your hands could cause you problems........
6:40 "im gonna do some joints" grabs propane
Very good thanks for showing us. I wonder, do I have to use eye goggle when soldering to be safe?
Very nice work. Your video was helpful
Also you should never put cartridge in for test, thats what the plug was for you removed in the beginning of segment. If cartridge is left in the flux and other debri can cause problems with the pressure balanced cartridge......Hello..
Copper has antimicrobial properties, which is a good reason to use it.
Copper has a proven track record for longevity when heavy grade L or K is used and installed properly. Plastic has a proven track record for lawsuits and failure!
good
Lots of good info here.

if you put the flux on the solder, would it make the solder drip all round the pipe when soldering it which would make it easier?
good stuff bro, bout to get into this next week. wish me luck
I had double drywall - one piece covering another with mold. Fml 💀💩🤷🏻♀️ Dumb people.
Ps: I’m addicted! Now I want to put a shower everywhere! On the pond, outside the house, redo all the bathrooms. 😆🤗
very good video
Nicely done!
@gblueslover2 Because Shark Bites and other brands like it are not manufacturer approved for use in concealed locations (inside wall) :D
Thanks for the video!
wonderful
very clean JOB. good
Why did you cross the intake line behind the tub spout? Any reason for needing to do it that way? Also, when applying flame, I have been taught to apply the heat mainly to the coupling, that solder follows the heat into the coupling, not to simply melt the solder. But if you melt enough solder onto the joint, aren't leaks pretty unlikely no matter which way you do it?
Well done man thanks for sharing . ..
I noticed you did not make an air gap. Is it necessary to avoid pipe banging or does the valve close slow enough so that it is not necessary? Also, do you prefre to sweat the pipes directly in the valve or to use a fitting?
There is better only a copper at present, on the other hand there is better that the welds!
Good video. You should wear safety glasses.
Hi, looks easy to install but will it be difficult to remove the mixer with all the soldering? With concealed mixer, will there be a lot of work and cost just to replace a mixer? Thks
I was reading that life of pax is 20 to 25. while copper pipes been used for centuries in building, commercial and residential of course now lead free soldering. what's your thought on that.
Copper hasn't been used for centuries, it just seems that way. There was galvanized pipe before copper. In the 70s Copper was used and before like 60 some places 50s under the slab of houses which they found out was very stupid so I got a lot of re-pipes that way over the years. Also re-piped a lot of galvie piping too. I love Pex only Aqua Pex none of the other stuff
Hola buenas noches seria tan amable de explicar en un video como instalar monomando para regadera que yebe la conexión para la tina por favor i gracias
I viewed this view on full screen, and I enjoyed it, but EVERY time your camera zoomed in, it was out of focus. It was very frustrating!
Hi. How high in inches should a valve body like that be mounted from the tub
how come there is one supply line? should be hot and cold supply line,
Great video thanks
Cool video but how do i replace valve that aleady install. For example i want brough a whole brand new moen package, and there an existing valve on the wall. I'm Thinking that i have to destroy the wall and cut the old copper pipe with the valve?? IS this the eazy way to replace an entire valve?? ...
Why do you soder the connections into the valve instead of using the provided threaded connections? does it hold better against leaks that way?
Solder is a superior seal to threaded
me gusta ese trabajo de plomeria
hi thanks for showing. dose volume control really work?
21st century materials, huh? You mean like pex? Yup, let me know how that worked out a few years ago. As a class A contractor, I honestly haven't met one plumber that uses anything but copper. Oh and copper wasn't really standard til 1950 (20th century). The 19th century was lead) iron) galvanized iron) and brass). Although, the egyptians used copper 5000 years ago. So there's that....And a final thought-copper is bacteriostatic. But your personal opinion is good argument for yourself.
Several things. I noticed the he did NOT (1) test the system (prior to installing the cartridge unit) and did NOT (2) flush the system to clear all debris in the line that can clog or damage the cartridge. I came to this video to see how to test the system using the test cap (at 10:35) that comes with the faucet.
!Good Luck in old valve!🤣🤣🤣👍
Thank you - check my video about MOEN valve...
Thank you, very helpful.
Nice
I totally agree with the other statements, you are doing it wrong. Stop touching the fitting after you've polished them, you applied so much flux on this thing, also like everyone else mentioned you heated the copper pipes instead of the joints. Finally please clean the pipes with damp cloth to remove excessive flux, it is corrosive material.
Good work don, i want to bee like you
You don't apply flame directly to the solder.
Another great video...a couple of questions: (1) would it be possible to use a non-soldering technique to install the shower valve? (2) was that an electrical line running behind the piping? If so should it be re-routed to avoid the area?
For this project, he appears to prefer to have a future shock.
You can use PEX plastic piping and fittings
thank you
your soldering technique is off. Apply heat to the fitting when adding the solder.
Doug Nash while we're going there... make sure you are aware that you are using a tool that applies high heat and and can warp material such as brass. Make a heat shield to prevent damage where the flame is applied, point your torch so the heat is focused on the area to be sweated..avoid pointing toward the valve body to prevent a leak or degrade or damage anything in the flames path.
I've got a question, would it not make more sense to solder a threaded female to the half-inch pipe and then make the connection with the thread to avoid hitting the new mixer valve?
@@RGSPrideTILE I believe solder a piece on last longer than a thread on connection
Why do you soder the fittings instead of using threaded connectors? Is it hold better?
That is a good question, I always use female adapters on male threads and use pex adapters on them so I can use pex fittings.
Threads can fail due to expand/contracting with temperature or at contact seal points. Solder joints do not fail when installed correctly.

Cool thanks
