Excellent kick drum video. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Hello Sara so nice to watch you again !! very well made video as usual
Thanks! It's been too long
Just found your channel and wow! Super helpful and you describe things in a way which is easy to understand. Can’t wait for this short series. Very valuable to me as a beginner
Awesome! Thank you!
Again a great video from Sara. This helped me to have an idea how to implement top-down mixing with drums.
Great to hear!
Ever so informative. Thanks Sara
Glad it was helpful!
Another very informative video of yours. Thank you so much for that. I just discovered your invaluable channel and I have a lot of catching up to do !
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks Sara, looking forward to the next one already.
Coming soon
Always so inspiring and great. Another really great video, thanks Sara for doing these!
You’re genuinely one of the best tutors around CZcams, keep up the awesome work!
Thank you so much!!
So so so good Sara! 🙌🏻
Thank you!
Thank you for this video exactly what I needed!! I love your style of teaching, highlighting why to do things opposed to little tricks that don't get fully explained. Very excited to watch more of your stuff as I learn more!
You are so welcome!
We love your videos. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
You are awesome. ❤ keep on doing those „how to listen“ videos. That is what helps young engineers the most.
Thank you! Will do!
THANK YOU FOR THE CLASS!
You’re welcome!
Very good Sara, thanks. I consider myself quite proficient on this subject but I still found myself watching the whole video so that says something. People of my age are old enough to appreciate the huge value in videos like these and people like yourself who teach for free to such a high level. I love your voice and style too which is very important when teaching.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Sarah! , I have your essentials course its amazing , I re-watch it all the time till my tiny brain soaks up the info :D.
Brilliant, I'm glad you like it!
Excellent tutorial once again Very well explained and informative. I’ve got the same channel strip so it’s great to see it being used.
Brillliant! Thanks for watching
Great idea for a series. Knowing *how* to hear the right things is one of things I struggle with most as a learner.
Thank you, I'm glad to help
Thanks for this Sara. I ton of great information without any waffle. Very good!
You’re welcome. That’s so funny because I think I DO waffle, 😂
Hello! Thanks for all your free videos here on CZcams. I focus a lot of mixing drums using e-drums with Toontrack "drum sound programs" like EZdrummer 3 and Superior Drummer 3. Cant have noisy drums in an apartment, I'd guess its the same for many home studio users, when creating our music... I think you have a very good way of explaining difficult things like compression for kick, for example... If I could sort of request another video from you in the future, I'd also like to learn how to mix other drum mics, like for example OH and Room, but preferably not recorded using acoustic drums but using e-drums and drum programs (if that makes any difference when mixing drums?). Whenever you have the time ofc, etc please do such a video. Kind regards from Sweden! Take care all! And keep rocking in a free world! 😊
Thanks for all your help, I’m a sound engineer student, from Scotland. your channel is a massive help for my mixing ❤
Happy to help!
Yes please. Keep this series going. I really found this so much helpful!
Will do!
Yes please Sara, i really like your teaching style, its very encouraging. I feel much more confident now on thinking of multiple Eqs as not a mistake but simply a way to all add up to the goal one is trying to achieve, especially in regards to using the Hi Pass, after creating a low Shelve boost. I’m always afraid to do things like this as i simply feel as though I’m doing something wrong, maybe as a result of hearing someone say it was, or just because i think rather along the lines of what you said yourself was that it seems as if it could be counterproductive. Which if done incorrectly it most likely would be, but as you were shaping the low end to achieve that curve in the lowest frequencies it was in fact your desired end you were creating. Bravo, thank you for this tutorial, and more please, time is precious and it must be quite an effort to do these tutorials, but so is the passing on of knowledge and we are all out here soaking up your guidance, your a godsend.
Much love from Australia
@@sandranoonan3141 I'm so pleased the video has helped give you more confidence to try out this sort of thing. It's the result that counts, do what you need to do to get there
Preset Kick Sara CARTER, is done! Thks a lot!
Haha!
great video. taking advantage of the resonance on the HPF which causes a frequency bump is SO useful. newer engineers sometimes misunderstand HPF, thinking it just shuts off all frequencies below the chosen frequency. great examples.
Thank you! Glad to help
It's times like this I think about how wonderful the internet is. I need to know how to do a thing I'm struggling with, and I'm a few clicks away from a comprehensive, well-presented and professionally edited video explaining EVERYTHING I need to know that an expert on the subject has taken the time to produce.
This is so fantastic thanks HUGELY for what you do Sara.
Thank you so much ☺️
Thanks you Sara!
You're welcome!
This is very much enlightening.
Looking forward to how you'll approach the bass guitar
Thanks 🙏
Love your videos.
Glad you like them!
New to your videos. Your hearing bass video helped me more than any other video on bass. This one also. Thank you!
Glad to help!
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing the bass and drum videos have immensely helped my mixes. Thank you so much for the help.
That's great to hear! @@dkpitt3912
Thanks Sara.
You're wlcome
This was a really great video. I've got into the habit of using larger changes on other tracks but had yet to realise I should be doing it on drum tracks too. Still guilty of making multiple precision moves on the kick and snare and this helped me arrive at a base sound for each in three minutes. Not the ten or fifteen pain staking ones it would normally. Brilliant workflow tips.
Great to hear!
So pleased you got it!
Sara is a Masterclass all by herself....
Haha! Indeed 🤩
Thanks!
Thank you so much 🙏
I have really learned a lot from your content and it’s greatly appreciated. Martha Stewart of audio recording that is not an insult I think your a very cool lady.
Haha! Thanks
Why didn't I know about this channel? A lady with a sweet voice dedicated to music production? Hell yeah.
Thanks and welcome 🤗
Thank you so much for the information.. 😊❤
You’re welcome!
Amazing.
Thanks!
Sara, I have analysed your Puig Tech settings (10:00) with PluginDoctor. The actual EQ changes are mininal. Like less than 1 dB. And then only a dip between 2-5k and a rise above 5k. No change in the bass frequencies, except below 20Hz. However, the Puig Tech, unlike the UAD version, has a lot of harmonic distortion. So maybe that is what changes the sound rather than EQ per se.
Hi Sara, you are very talented and very pretty, and you know how to explain really well and in a simple way. I always follow you, keep it up you are magnificent. Sorry for my English :-)
Thank you so much!
Hi Sara - How about EQ on a bodhran? Have you any experience or have some good tips on how to get the best low end thump - I play in a traditional folk band and this is something of a challenge for us at the moment - where to place the mic - what type of mic to use - etc We have a lot of questions :-) Your kick drum advice really helped me to understand the fundamental frequencies that make up a good low end kick drum - thanks for that!
When using ssl channel strip on a kick drum G series mostly , I find myself often pushing the /3 button on a LMF dial the frequency its usually on the lowest point and boost a few db that adds warmth and tap to the kick
Yes, an often over looked button!
Danke!
Thank you so much! 🙏
Legend
Haha! Cheers
im curiou if it sounded like drummer wanted it too? did the drum sound as intended in the first place, if you were in the room standing behind the drummer? im listening on bose nc700 headphones and the before kick sounds like a phonebook close micd tapping with a finger, not even like a drum at all, interesting!
It's important to note that the filter frequencies shown on most SSL console emulations are very different from what the filters are actually cutting. Check out Andrew Zeleno's video called "Shocking SSL EQ Issue" where he goes through various SSL plugins and shows the differences.
As a heads up, this doesn't render the plugins useless, but it is very important to be aware of, especially when learning mixing and frequencies.
Thanks for the info, good to know
Seems like an odd choice to do blues for kick drum being that it’s not really a prominent aspect of that genre. Would love to see one on like industrial music or dense mixes where it gets super hard to get good kick.
A quick note for those interested in purchasing an SSL strip: If you can get the SSL Native Channel Strip on sale, it's a bit easier to dial in than the Waves or brainworx versions for a couple of reasons: 1) According to the Andrew Zeleno video mentioned by another commenter, the high pass filter is more accurate on the SSL Native than the other companies that I mentioned, 2) there are input AND output meters side by side instead of the vU and dBu meters on this one, which helps you level match if you choose to do so, and 3) it's bigger by default, so it's easier to make smaller changes and to see what you're doing! There's also a spot at the bottom which shows the signal path in a way that makes more sense than this old-school UI with the buttons.
Great info, thanks!
Great as usual. Which Neve channel strip are you referring to? The UAD 88 RS ? Thanks
Currently I'm favouring the KIT N105, it's the one I use in the snare EQ video. Neve 8078.
Does no one work in a Jazz setting anymore?!!! (sadness). Love this video and saved it to my library! It is easily applicable for percussions like a Surdo or Timba drums for Brasilian Samba and Brasilian Jazz.
I am glad you liked it! I love to mix jazz but I don’t get asked often to do it
This is great; thanks Sara. I do want to ask: to me the kick/drums seem louder than the other instruments like the sax that is (in my headphones) sitting behind the drums. Not sure if that is what is being aimed at or if the drums (kick?) is/are suppose to 'sit' behind or in front of the sax? To enhance these instruments. But that seems to be the sound to me.... l can't wait for your snare/s video!
That would be a stylistic choice really and something you could use a reference track to decide upon
A cut above other content online. Question: how would you approach a separate kick in / out pair? Thanks!
That's a subject for another video!
Cheers! Sarah. Lots of good info. Just wondered, how often do you sidechain the kick to the bass.
Alex
Rarely, tbh. Only if I can't fix it with EQ or a multiband comp will I go to that option. It's depends on the tracks given as well. If there are sub synths, then I am more likely to go that route.
Thanks for replying, Sarah. Is that more of an EDM approach, rather than a general rule?
Ah! Kick drum EQ is the one area I still sort of struggle the most. With heavy music in particular it's been a wild ride learning how to hear when there is too much going on in the low mids and also where I want it in relation to the bass. It can get tricky when the kick drum is playing fast.
Yeah, fast kick playing is a challenge, I might be wrong but I think a deeply scooped out sound would work there, like a 700-750Hz cut? Metal's not my thing!
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing In metal, the kick drum often doesn't have as much low end. Instead, it has an extreme amount of click and attack. In my experience, an aggressive mid scoop followed by boosts at 2.5K and 8K do the trick.
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing yeah that sounds about right :)
@@rome8180 Yep, and the scoop will easily reach down to 400Hz sometimes even 250Hz.
The gate can be used creatively to increase attack and sometimes to shorten the tail, and the low end is controlled to leave some space for the fundamentals of the bass guitar.
Dynamic boosts in the top end (usually with a transient designer these days) to further increase punchiness as the compressor cannot be expected to do enough without chocking 16th notes.
Then saturation or soft clipping to increase perceived loudness without raising peak levels.
And then ofcourse you blend in a sample with similar processing.
👏
😊👍❤
Cheers!
Hi Sara, thanks for the awesome content! What puzzles me that every kick drum mix tutorial from almost anyone starts with a dark, wooly sound. My problem is that I have at a starting position a very dense sound with too much attack and a strong basketball sound even with muffling the drum to a fair amount. It's a 24" bass drum with a 5" offset hole. I have a D112 inside the hole, an SM91 inside and a Warm Audio 47jr on the resonant side. Do I drive the mics too hot maybe?
Hmmm…phase?
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing Thought the same and checked that, too. I‘ve experimented with different head combinations and tunings today and I‘ve made some progress…maybe your video has helped it or at least inspired. ;-) Next I‘ll check if it sounds better with a 1073 mic pre/EQ with more color or a Trident or Drawmer.
Thanks for taking the time.
@@thomasnussbaum4711 Mic placement is key really. Can someone play whilst you move the mics around whilst listening on closed back headphones?
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing Unfortunately not, but I will take the time to record a sample to listen to. A bite time consuming but I think it will me get to the desired result. Can‘t wait for the next video in this series.
Hi Sara, good to see great content from you again👍🏾😄. I have been eagerly awaiting new videos from you-you never disappoint. Your videos are so informative and helpful. Thank you.
PS: are you still loving the kh750 sub? Still hoping to get one soon to compliment the ‘KH80’s🙏🏾🙌🏾
Thank you! Yes, more videos to come and still loving the KH750 sub and KH310's
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing looking forward to see what is coming next!! And that’s great to hear re. monitors. Am really looking forward to when I get my sub. Best wishes
I noticed you didn't drive the input gain into the channel to get some saturation. Do you usually do that? I like giving it 6 db.
I usually do but I didn't want to go there in this video. I wanted the EQ moves to be clean.
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing I fugured as much , thanks! I interested in your technique for getting a good crest factor in your mixes would make a great video?
@@1loveMusic2003 noted!
What's your favourite channel strip for drums?
SSL Bus and Black BOX
@@hanisiblini Yeah, saturation impacts tone so that deserves it's own video
I got the SSL 9000j strip (brainworx) for a hefty discount the other day and it immediately became my go-to channel strip for individual drum channels. Being a hiphop producer, the way it processes kicks, snares and hats sounds absolutely wonderful. It adds punch and overall impact as well as subtle saturation and even a great stereo width/depth (depending on the source of course).
@@redbigapplefloppa302 Yes, that's one of my fav's
I really like the Lindell channel strips, because they give you three distinct flavors, and you can pick which one fits the song best. The 50 (API) is really forward and punchy, where the mid-range really comes right out of the speakers; the 80 (Neve) is more open and sparkly, with a lot of detail in the high and low ends; whereas the 69 (Helios) has a darker, grainier character, which adds a certain vibe without it sounding lo-fi.
Kik drom 😊
yes!
Hearing more examples with the explanations would helpful. For example, when channel strips were introduced and various freqs were mentioned and their performance with different plugins - let us hear what you're talking about. It got better but by that time I lost interest.
Maybe, just do the job of fixing the kick and explain what, how, and why as you go.
Thanks for your feedback
How come you and Paul Third have the same Profile Pic? ......Who?....How comeyall look alike?.....Is?.....Nvm
