How Does an Automatic Watch work? This video explain the Mechanism of Mechanical Watch (Manual/Automatic)
An automatic or self-winding watch is a type of Mechanical Watch in which the mainspring is wound automatically as a result of the natural motion of the wearer to provide energy to run the watch, making manual winding unnecessary. A mechanical watch which is neither self-winding nor electrically driven is called a manual watch. Most mechanical watches manufactured today are self-winding.

@Corat not really, undecorated movements with little complications, for the over inflated price of a sub you could get a second hand Lange or Jaeger-LeCoultre. Also absolutely nothing wrong with seiko, infact the build quality and finish of grand seiko far surpasses Rolex in every way.

Really nice animation. In my experience, the one thing you need to stress so a person understands the mechanism is that while the balance pushes the pallet fork back and forth, the pallet forks shape allows it to push (add energy to) the balance wheel every time it releases from the escape wheel. Without understanding that hard to see piece, it appears that the balance is where the power is coming from.

Well if we're looking at this like a tutorial vid rather than an exhibition of this particular product's quality, "How a Watch Works (1949) | Hamilton Watch" (on the channel of Hamilton Watch of course) blows this out of the water. As this video goes out of its way to mention three brand-specific features of THIS watch at the end (special alloy, shock absorbtion, wear-resistant self-winding mechanism) I'd think this video comes closer to an artist just showing off their work. Rightly so if I might add.

This is why I stopped wearing quartz movement & smart watches and started wearing automatic watches. This is amazing engineering and inspires me everytime I see that on my wrist. Mind blowing engineering because a simple mechanical gear train can store energy and use it to run almost accurate(+- 2s/day for swiss movements) time while absorbing day to day shocks forever. Did humans really build this?

I'm a computer engineer but I always wanted to have a side hobby of building mechanisms with gears. it seems so relaxing, I'd like to replicate the mechanical wonders of the ancient world such as Da Vincis Knight, the Preening Swan or Al-Jazaris floating orchestra. People don't realize there were walking, "talking" and singing (from internal musical organs made to immitate singing) automata of the ancient world made from nothing but gears, pulleys, musical instruments etc. Primitive things. I think every engineer should dabble in our past achievements to understand the philosophy of our art and appreciate the modernity of the contemporary craft.

My father was a watch and clock maker. I grew up with these beautiful things in his workroom, disassembled for repair / cleaning . Digital watches killed off the craft, and however clever and sophisticated our smart watches are, they cannot match the elegance and craftsmanship of mechanical watches. The big names like Omega, Rolex, Tissot, Seiko, Longines and Schaffhausen will always have their revered place in history. I hope they will continue to be manufactured for those who value their intricate precision and unique character. Likewise, digital pianos have their place, but give me a Bechstein or a Steinway any day.

Thank you very much for the video that shows the mechanism of a watch how does it works. The motion work (60 : 12 : 1 gear train mechanism) that drives the hands of the clock or watch is the same in both spring driven and quartz (battery operated) clock or watch but in spring driven clock or watch the gear train is driven by spring and the escapement keeps the pendulum or balance wheel oscillating for many days and in quartz clock or watch the gear train is driven by small peizo electric motor (either lavet stepping motor or smooth sweeping motor) that is powered by quartz crystal oscillator that receives power from battery via small electronic circuit board so there is no need for escapement. That is the difference. Please upload another video that shows the difference between the mechanism of spring driven clock or watch with centre second and without centre second.
