- OUTBACK EP04: Taking off from Shark Bay, refuelling at Carnarvon, then a huge 4 hour flight to Broome over remote Outback Australia. I divert around a bush fire, view awesome desert scenery, hold at Port Hedland to let a passenger jet depart and enter Broome's Class D Airport.
I'm flying around Outback Australia over two weeks in a Cirrus SR22. If you're new here, hello! I'm Stef, a Private Pilot, and I make regular aviation and travel vlogs. SUBSCRIBE for flying ideas, aviation adventures, destination vlogs, and more.

VERY IMPORTANT: I am a private pilot and am NOT qualified to give flying instruction. This video, like all videos on this channel, has been significantly edited from the original source footage and is provided for entertainment purposes only. Many radio calls and procedures have been omitted. If you have any questions about anything you see or hear, please speak to a Certified Flying Instructor first.
Itâs amazing how your vlogs have added depth to the Australian scenery which you canât appreciate from google maps. It makes you realise how vast a country Australia really is. Thanks for making these videos so interesting.
Man those views! I will have to plan my own simular trip when I get my PPL! Also interesting to hear the radio calls with Broome Tower, sounded like a friendly bloke!
This is awesome, we live in a great palce, love the landscape, and that pilot stuff you do as well. Thanks for all the things you do. Cheers Martin
I love watching these videos, it really gives me an appreciation of Australia. From Perth originally I love seeing the WA out back, now that a live in Melbourne I canât wait to do my licence and get up there in my own plane to go and do the same thing youâre doing. Thank you Stef for inspiring me!
Have loved all these outback trips. Canât stop watching them....
So much to see on this beautiful planet! Thanks, Stefan
Youâre so right, itâs an amazing world, I canât wait to see more of it.
Great to meet you in Broome, enjoy the rest of your trip
Thanks for all these great videos and keeping that spark alive for me. Hope to get back in the air again soon.
another beautiful vlog...love it all!
Awesome trip so far!!! Wow!!
WOW Broome looks amazing! Have to add that to my bucket list!
What a beautiful landscape
Awesome vid Stef! Amazing views! Thanks for bringing us along. I donât know how you can go that long and not have to hit the bathroom. I barely made it through the video without having to go! đ
Randy Carlson you can buy toilet bags, Iâve done a few flights where they have come in handy. They have a chemical in them that turns to a jelly like substance when u pee in them. TMI, but handy to know đ
Cool!!!!
Great video, Stef.
amazing scenery
Great flight Stef. You certainly are very proficient. Beautiful scenery too.
Quite a flight! Loving these videos!
Beautiful scenery. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching!
Awesome!
Best video yet!
Awesome Stef like I commented on the Nullarbor leg those landscape colours are đ
Excellent content Stefan - ur killing it!
Really enjoying taking this trip with you Stefan. The scenery and the colors are absolutely mesmerizing. I was right with you when you said how great it would be to be able to explore some of the scenes below. I imagine it's probably not easy even by vehicle in some cases. Looks very remote.
Another great episode. Loving the scenery too!
I know right? The scenery Iâve been lucky enough to see has been amazing so far.
Such good content, dunno how I missed it! Nice work, Stef!
I used to live in Broome from 1977-1983 my Father was the Manager of the Airport for the (then) dept of Aviation.
Hi Stef. I was just watching your prev video... Nice flight mate. Let's enjoy your new video just been updated ;) Have a nice day mate
Stefan great job.
Great stuff Stef. That was a long leg. Views are stunning and glad you had Milkshake securely fastened!
Haha, thanks mate. Milkshake is precious cargo, got to protect your co-pilot.
Western Australia is stunningly beautiful. Thank you for bringing us the views! I hate for each episode to end.
Haha, thatâs a nice comment, cheers Tom. Plenty more flying and touring still to come. And yeah, Western Australia is amazing, and so huge!
Pure beauty
Thank You for posting these incredible videos, once i discovered your videos, i was hooked.
I spent several hours watching them, and their very informative and give a Pom living in the real Wales, here in the Uk, an idea of the size of Australia.
Incredible views of the red earth, almost seems like i'm looking at the surface of Mars. Thanks mate
Love the bovine copilot
I just found your channel and Iâm really enjoying your videos, I really want to plan a trip now, you have stirred up my eagerness to fly away for a while, keep up the good work mate đ
Nice!
Loving the latest content Stef, in between watching your back catalogue đ
P.S. does the intro for this one still say Kalgoorlie to Shark Bay AKA EP03 ?
This now really makes me want to fly long trips ^^
Nice bit of kit that CIRRUS. Nice bit of service in Broome too, impressed.
Yeah Broome were really helpful in the tower and brilliant on the ground. Definitely recommend anyone to visit there, a fantastic approach over Cable Beach too.
Such a great series Stefan from that vid I got never be scared to ask if you donât know loving it mate keep up the awesome work
Thanks George, and youâre right, never be afraid to ask the question. Be prepared, if youâre not sure call up the tower beforehand and ask for the local procedures, but if youâre not sure just ask in plain English. ATC are there to help us all get home safely.
Enjoy your channel a lot Stefan.
Thanks for watching James, I appreciate that.
Nice landing
Great video Stefan :)
Cheer Ben đ
I've done most of these flights up and down the coast commercially, some during the 1970's, none of which have the same personal feel of a single engine piston banger - granted by comparison this Cirrus is beautifully kitted out. Excellent video + blog.
Thanks for watching Geoff, yes it's a real privilege to be able to do a trip like this under your own pilotage. Cheers, stef.
The views were just Awesome âïž
Thanks Stewart. It really is quite a spectacular landscape.
Fantastic landscape Stef!! Very hard to get the scale of it
Thanks for the great content. I just found your channel as an aspiring pilot from NZ and this is a great series. Thanks again.
Iâm also from NZ Iâm doing bch of avation at massey very challenging but worth it
Infinteflight Simer Neat
Stunning WA scenery! I'm afraid when I finally get to visit Australia, I won't have time to see everything (guess that means I'll have to come a couple times!). This trip is epic!
Carnarvon airport is a good airport. Nice airport and as you know there is fuel available too. Hope you enjoyed the flight to Broome.
You're just the best Stefan! Keep it up and hope you're having a ball!
Another fantastic vlog. Loving this trip. đđ
Thanks Anthony, me too! đ©đ
@@StefanDruryHey mate. Just wondering how much fuel your Cirrus takes to fill up and do you fill it to the top on every flight? Cheers.
I'm still flying with you on Infinate flight
Loving this trip. Landscape in Australia is amazing. Looks like you could be flying over Mars in some of the shots.
Ashley Chatterton awsome!
Aussies landscape isn't very nice. It's so barren and desolate. Fly to the USA and trip around Utah and Arizona holy moly they're amazingly gorgeous.
@@420sesamestreet3 Are you insulting Australiaâs landscape? There is Ularu, Great Barrier Reef, Eagle Bay (down in WA not really landscape but beautiful beaches and house plots) etc.
Over 4 hours without a toilet break, đź you must have a long range bladder. Enjoying your videos , cheers Ben.
Haha thanks Ben. I do carry an empty bottle just in case đ
I am following with interest - thank you! I really enjoy the adventure of flying cross-country, but I really just wanted to say I beat you on flight time (not distance) - I've done 4.3 hours in a trike at ~55kts, Goondiwindi QLD to Narromine NSW =250NM non-stop. And only burnt 55 litres ;-)
really good scenery, good pilot, what can go wrong? ''!''
What a trip Stefan! I need to get into a Cirrus, Iâm still stuck in LCM đŹ
Great vlog as usual! Really dramatic scenery too just stunning! Iâd love to fly round Australia one day! I ought to fly round the UK first! Have a great, safe trip!
Do both! Good luck with your flying.
Itâs better on highway1 , right around, 24,000 km. Magic. Been fortunate to do it.
Thanks for the shout out another great flight and edit
Was great to meet you Jed, good luck with your flying mate.
Loving the trip stefan. i might follow your legs after you have fininshed in my Sr22 (flight sim of course ) lol .cant wait for the next vlog. Watching you makes me want to attempt getting ppl. stay safe
Thatâs great to hear, attaining your PPL is one of the most challenging and rewarding things you can do in life in my opinion. Good luck!
My home town of Broome, I cant wait to have my licence and fly over Broome
Hi I flew around Kalbarri a few years ago from a-small airport fantastic Doug Manchester England đ
Yes Carnarvon is a nice place to visit I stayed there for a couple of weeks on my trip. If you have a chance while flying over the top end I suggest a flight over the Bungle Bungles in the Purnululu National Park would be well worthwhile. I took a scenic flight from Kununurra and it was fantastic.
nails the music and production
Kilo Juliet November.... Extremely jealous of your trip, over....
Mate that was a top video! watched the entire episode with my gf!!
Fantastic flight vlog! Watching from the US and now I wanna visit Australia
me too!
YSHK-YCAR-YBRM, Thanks Stef & Hello
Awesome, great flying. Off to Kununurra next?
Affirm, thatâs coming up tomorrow.
"Long haul" in KJN đ
Awesome flight! Beautiful scenery! One question? Does your ad hoc sun shade technically impede your keeping a good lookout for VFR? And if so are there approved ones for aircraft? Great content as usual!
We stopped in Broom on a cruise you can purchase beautiful pearls in town.
hooked on brooke
Loving the vlogs of this trip. It's also cool to follow it on flightaware.com using your tail number. I wish there were more Cirrus aircraft for hire here in New Zealand!
Great viewing, but gosh youâre missing a lot! I appreciate that weather caused you to miss out on WAâs SW corner, but even after Shark Bay Iâd have suggested overflying Mt Augustus (bigger then Ayerâs Rock), going to Ningaloo (I think Learmonth is the most suitable airfield), landing at Roebourne to visit Cossack etc. After Broome: Cape Leveque, overflying Yampi Sound (Cockatoo & Kolan Islands, entrance to Walcott Inlet - be here with a falling tide if possible)?
Honestly looking at the sheer quality of your videos Iâd have expected well over 50,000 subs
Thanks Edward, Iâm just greatful for the awesome subscribers I already have. But I appreciate the comment.
Stefan Drury Hopefully itâs a sign for the future
đđđ
Fantastic Stef! Did you decide not to go with the two blade prop? BTW was reading technical article on temperal anti aliasing which explains why prop sometimes looks like it has four blades, or is going backwards etc....
Great content. Iâm currently doing bch if avation very hard but looks worth it
Most things in aviation are hard but incredibly rewarding. Donât give up, itâs always worth it in the end. Good luck!
Spectacular scenery, rather arid to put it mildly.
Very cool!
Should take me for a flight if ur in syd haha
Great video. Loved the scenery, what do you use for these nice landscape shots from the air, and how do you stabilize them?
Thanks mate, usually either an iPhone or my Canon 80D, both have lens stabilisation but I sometimes add a little digital stabilising in post.
Awesome video. Out of interest what do you do when you arrive at the airfield when flying cross country? Do you take a taxi to a hotel or do they have on-site accommodation? How do you get around town and do you rent a hangar while you are there?
Scenery looked incredible! What do you do during the flight?
INTERESTED IN YOUR LAP NOTEBOOK ASSEMBLE BRAND PLSLOOKS LIKE YOU HAVE PLEANT ROOM TO DO STUFF , LOOKS ORGANIZED
my record was last month, 4h58m !! 5 hours flight, never though could handle that, lot of headwind ...I did not have to use the empty plastic bottle. :) must say you get rapidly used to long flights and start doing things such as precise fuel management / changing altitude for higher ground speed which make it different experience
Awesome video man! You make me want to learn how to fly!! đ Oh and one other thing...is that a cow in the seat next to you??? đ
Yes and their name is Milkshake
Buddy you are awesome looking handsome guy đđ
6:05 TUNE ??? i love it
Absolutely Fantastic Videos, Following you from Brisbane. Cheers. Whats the song also at 6min 22?
Is that safe to have a non-transparent shade like that? (7:00) thanks for the videos!
Great vid as per usual! Random question - how do you pay for fuel? Was the aerodome unattended?
Most refuelling bowsers are managed by AirBP and require either a credit card or a BP Card to pay for your fuel. So you swipe your card, fill up, and the total is debited from your account. So you can do it all yourself.
Stefan I
fly Lancair out of new york, planning a world tour this year-end, I would like to meet when I reach Australia.
Very friendly controller!
I called the tower up the day before as well, so they were expecting me and Iâd mentioned I was unfamiliar with the airspace. All round a great service from Broome Airport which really made it easy for me. Preparation is definitely the key.
I do this whenever I do a coastal flight in Adelaide..last thing the tower needs is an unexpected 152 slowly making its way past the airport
That was so good - thank you! đ§Ą
What happens when you need to pee during the flight - especially with passengers onboard? đ€
Empty water bottle
Hey Stefan, after flying the three blade prop for a bit how are you finding it? Which one do you prefer? Thanks Ben
Hey Stef,
What do you use to edit your videos? And how did you learn to edit? Your videos inspire me to keep focusing on my main goal of becoming a airline pilot.
Thankyou, hope to meet you one day in Sydney
My first job was digital audio/video production and digital media is my background. I use Final Cut Pro X. Best of luck with your aspirations to become an airline pilot Martin, I hope you achieve your goals, go get it! âïžđšââïžđ
Thanks heaps Stefan! One question; if you were not constrained by time, would you still take a Cirrus or might you go with a bush plane like a Super Cub so you could land at all those interesting spots you're seeing?
Iâd definitely love to try some lower level bush flying. There are some pilots in Australia Iâm trying to organise something like that with. But for me, I like touring long distances and the SR22 is perfect for my needs.
Can't fine the song at 6:00 ,what's the name pleease ?
awesome panoramas by the same way , beautiful
Did you know that guy who escorted you to taxiway foxtrot? They do it for everyone? Pretty handy if youâre unfamiliar with an aerodrome though.
Yep, 95% of arrivals big or small, we try to make it easier for everyone.
