I just graduated from Designlab’s bootcamp this month and I couldn’t agree more with all of this - especially the advice about mentors! I didn’t switch mentors but wish I had.
My mentor was very kind and approachable, but they didn’t give detailed feedback, and approved almost all my work without much iteration. But this is now hurting me as I look for a job since I feel like I have to go back and redo a lot of my work. Listen to your gut, and if your mentor isn’t working for you, definitely don’t feel scared to switch!

@@buttercup9700 I would say create a schedule of all the tasks you have to do and stick with it! I was in the full-time course and came up with a whole plan for each of my projects that I didn't stick with and procrastinated on - which made me fall behind. I would also say to not be afraid to ask your mentor for as much feedback and critique as possible (something I didn't always do because I was kind of anxious about critique). And definitely switch mentors if you feel like they're not meeting your needs. Good luck!!

Thank you for this. I’m in foundations and my mentor admitted she’s new. During our first meeting she dog sitting and seemed like she was slightly distracted. She’s nice but I don’t want someone nice, I want someone who’s gonna pick at my work and challenge me! So far my feedback has been okay with a few suggestions but I want more. If after our second meeting we’re still not clicking I’m gonna switch. Thanks for this video! I joined designlab because of you ☺️

My least favorite part of my bootcamp was the mentors. We were all given a mentor and all of my friends ended up switching mentors. I switched 3 times. The program strongly recommended that we stick it out with our provided mentor but I found that they weren't present, or were passive, or did little to encourage me to dive further. Honestly, not having people to ask questions and turn to can really kill your motivation

That probably says more about the bootcamp than your specific needs. Mentors need training.

This convinced me to change my current mentor. I was just going to stick it out with them since I only have 2 more Capstones to finish, but you made me realize that would be doing a disservice to myself!

I am currently taking the Google UX certificate and this video is so helpful! I am unsure about taking a bootcamp, since I already have a bachelors degree right now I am focusing on creating a portfolio to gain a job. I am really open about the range of jobs, since I know its tough to get into UX.

hey mimi!! do you think you could make a video on how to keep learning and growing your skills after you get your first job? i got hired for my first UX job at the end of October not even a week after finishing my bootcamp (not joking!) and we just finished a really fast pace project that was for a pretty high profile client. This project wasn't a typical project (where id be practicing UI and such, it was more of a redesign) I feel like i should rest for the holidays, but I've been feeling guilty about not building my skills since. I think i worry that if i don't keep learning my skills (especially UI) will vanish. any advice? thank you for all that you do!! :)

@@paulswazzy539 hi Paul! I did CareerFoundry. It’s a 9 month program but I took a little longer to finish since I went on vacation and such. CF has a job prep course that preps you with a good resume and portfolio to go out into the working world with! I had a great mentor and tutor so I highly recommend it :)
