  • The obsession with marriage and the courtship rituals of Regency England are all alive in Pakistani society today, according to one group of women.
Two hundred years after the death of Jane Austen, some of her biggest fans are an eclectic bunch of well-educated women who dress up regency-style and discuss her work over high tea in the country's second-largest city, Lahore.

Bravo to BBC tho,out of millions of meaningful stories it picked something insignificant, one should never do something for the sake of doing, you dont need jane austin or mr darcy to smile and to discuss or to relate to people,go out and feed a homeless you will conquer the happiness, dont waste this precious life,a lot meaningful is to discuss,i hate it because the depiction of fun and joy in this video is a lie,

Look I am 100% for women's rights. I just find this an insult to the real oppressed Pakistani women. Hence the dislike.
There are Pakistani women who literally do not have enough food to eat. Working day and night just to feed their family while studying getting only 4-6 hours of sleep a day. Then some have managed to get scholarships to medical college topped the schools and helped their younger siblings to better their lives. I know this because I have met them.
Those are women who have a tough time. Not these ladies who have been provided $5,000-$20,000/year private English medium education by their fathers (men) and have wealthy husbands (men) who have provided for all their financial and emotional needs their entire lives. The women shown in this segment lack financial independence due to lack of skills. The real victims of Pakistan's patriarchy are the women who are oppressed, those who are not supported due to their gender by their parents, et cetera. My heart bleeds for them, not the socialites of my own wealth bracket.
I hope the BBC reflects on my opinion because I would much rather have BBC report on women who have a real tough time not these socialites. I can introduce BBC to the lady doctor who had such a tough time growing up.

What’s with all the hate?! I’m a British Asian who loves Austen. I discovered her 25 years ago at Uni and find her writing to be very socially observant, witty and humorous. Her writing resonated with me because I love history and at the time some of the females obsessions with getting married reminded me of my own mother. It’s entertainment that’s all. There’s no rules on the types of films, books etc certain groups should or shouldn’t read - those sorts of opinions are the backward ones...
