In the United States, the airline industry loses an estimated 2 million bags annually. Now you might be wondering, where do all those lost bags end up? Well Jason and Peter were able to get a definitive answer to that question. The majority end up in Alabama! Really, no Really! Our guest Bryan Owens discusses his unique family business…which has been dealing with lost and unclaimed luggage for over 50 years.
Their enormous store, in Scottsboro, Alabama - which covers more than a city block - sells tens of thousands of unclaimed baggage items every year. And with five decades of experience processing enormous volumes of lost items, Bryan reveals some of the one-of-a-kind pieces found in unclaimed luggage… including a 3,000-year-old Egyptian burial mask, a live rattlesnake, and even a shrunken human head which you can see in the store’s recently opened museum.

The airports always belts out "Do not leave luggage unattended" but once when I landed I forgot my bag on the belt. I flew a lot and pretty much always flew without checked luggage and I had my routine down to the minute how to unboard and get down to the express train to the city. So I did as usual so once the plane had landed I bolted to the train. Halfway to the city "My bag!!". I took the next train back and got in line to customer service. The line was loooong and it took probably half an hour to process the people ahead of me. Once there I go "I forgot to pick up my luggage from the belt"
-Well that's not our problem. You'll have to check with... I think airport security?
So I go to security and ask them. "Nope" we don't handle mishandled luggage.
-Well, I know it's mishandled but it's not mishandled by you, It's mishandled by me!
-Then we don't care even more! Did you even check the belt?
And there it was. I walked back to the belt and my bag had been spinning around for a good hour and a half...

In my view the one obvious and interesting question they should have asked is "Have they ever found a suitcase with cold hard cash in it? If so what was the largest amount that they have found?"

Very interesting podcast, Jason and Peter. When i was flying home from Hawaii, a man in front of me tried to carry on 3 axes!! When told he had to check the axes he tried to explain that they were a part of his juggling act. 😅 And Jason, Dinner With Dad...excellent!❤

George would throw a fit and an entire tv episode dedicated to his missing bag 😂 He would also walk off the plane without shoes.

I love these podcasts - Peter and Jason's brand of curiosity, humor and questioning is top tier. And your choice of topics and banter is refreshing - I especially appreciate that you tend to AVOID political proselytizing. Thank you.

Has anyone ever found their lost items in his store?

I'm an employee there. Yes that has happened a few times! One time to me personally. This man and his brother came in and told me to pull out a ring. Long story short it turned out to be their great uncles ring or was a family crest ring. Specifically made for him. Someone stole it from him.. a few years later the brothers come in store and see it. They did end up getting it! They were telling me details of the ring that they knew before we did.
