    Despite losing, Sanchez used mostly the right tactics to beat Seles - drop shots, coming to the net when ready, giving a lot of slices. In this year, the losses on hard courts were probably more of a bridesmaids complex of maintaining intensity (which was key to her success), having lost so many other finals, than other factors.
    The losses on clay, however, were more surprising implying that her fitness was becoming a problem. The US open on saw a sloppy Sanchez making so many errors even though it was against Hingis, and the inconfidence got explored from there to end 1996 disappointingly.

      The only clay final she lost that I know of is to Graf 10-8 in the 3rd, and she isn't the odds on favorite to win a match vs Graf no matter the surface. The only match she ever played vs Graf on any surface she was arguably favored to win was the 95 French final.

      @@richardross4677 she had a lot of weird losses prior to the French Open. Habsudova, Lithovtseva, Coetzer, Mag. Maleeva, Spirlea... This probably indicated that she was on the decline on clay.

    Una gran final con una impresionante Seles en el primer set y una gran Arantxa en el segundo demostrando lucha, buen juego en la red y buena mano con grandes dejadas. Una pena no llegar al tercer set!!!

      No, I don't get confused. I meant that certain comments are useless, because 1000 examples could be cited. The two finals that Monica lost would have seen her win if she hadn't lost the first set as she won the second 6/0. Or Federer who deserved to win Wimbledon 2019 but wasted the opportunity to serve for the 40/15 match

    This match had an unusual tension to it, and you could almost sense something between the players too. This is one of the only matches after her comeback where I saw Monica question calls so strongly.

      The very first meeting between them after her comeback . I think they were both out to prove a point . Arantxa shared the stage with Steffi for a long time and now Monica was back and all attention was on her

      @@CJJAK37 Yes and Sanchez was outspoken against Monica's co-#1 provisional status for awhile. Which while I am not sure if I disagreed with, she also did have a valid point on. I am sure Monica, understandably, did not like ASV's objection to that. So even though they were friendly, they definitely each had a point to prove here.

      @@CJJAK37 The funny thing about this year was Jana was beating Seles, Seles was beating ASV, but ASV was beating Jana (apart from their one indoor match where Jana destroyed ASV, Jana loves grass and indoors best). It is funny how Jana beat Seles at both the Olympics and French, and even though the Olympic match was close it was mostly only due to Jana's errors and concentration lapses, she seemed in control in both matches. Yet couldn't get past ASV in either. Yet when Seles and ASV met it was Seles fairly easily like always. Funny how different match ups produces totally different dynamics and results.

    • @gk891
      @gk891 Před 2 lety +1

      @@grantgoffin4774 Yup, it's all about match ups. In 1991, Sabatini won most of her matches against Graf that year but lost most of her matches against Seles. Yet Graf was 2-0 against Seles that year. For example, in the spring within the span of a few weeks, Graf lost to Sabatini at Boca Raton, Miami, and Amelia Island. But in San Antonio (between Miami and Amelia Island), Graf routed Seles in straight sets even though a week earlier, Seles defeated Sabatini in straight sets at Miami.

      @@gk891 And I really believe Graf would have beaten Seles in both the Australian and U.S Open if they played. Maybe not the French as she wasn't playing that well there. But other players took out Graf for Seles. I don't think Seles could have been as dominant in 91-92 if she played Graf in all the finals, but Seles was much more dominant against the field those years. So yes all about match ups.

    How much passion and fire were in those years in the game of Arantxa. An amazing woman. And how cruel and unfair fate was to her, not giving her victory in 1996, even in such a tournament as Montreal
