- "Gleanntáin Ghlas' Ghaoth Dobhair" is a song in the Irish language written by Proinsias Ó Maonaigh (father of Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh of Altan) about his hometown of Gaoth Dobhair in County Donegal. It translates as "the green glens of Gweedore". Mairéad gave permission to The North Texas School of Irish Music to record her father's song on their album "Winter Air", released in 2013. Winter Air is available on Amazon, CD Baby, and at the school's own web site: schoolofirishmusic.org/shop/
English Translation:
Farewell to the noble
mountains of Donegal
And twice farewell to tall Errigal,
arching over rowen and ash tree
When I passed by Dunlewey lake,
lying quietly in the glen
Behind me were the little green glens of Gaoth Dobhair,
and it nearly broke my heart
Travelling through Glendowan's Hills,
and Muckish behind me
I don't mind saying with sorrow and grief,
that tears fell from my eyes
Westward to America was my journey,
far across the wide sea
I said farewell for a while to Donegal,
and the little green glens of Gaoth Dobhair
I never wanted to leave
my own beloved land
But the foreigner's heavy handed deceit
and treachery drove me away
It would be my heart's desire to return again,
when I should get a little money
To spend the end of my life with my family,
'round the little green glens of Gaoth Dobhair
Yet farewell, farewell to Donegal,
the County fine and fair
And to your brave men who in time of need,
did not ever cower before the foreigner
There's a place in my heart for each man and woman,
each child big and small
Who live in peace, without sorrow or grief,
in the little green glens of Gaoth Dobhair - Hudba
Thanks Asmongold.

This may be the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard
Thank you!
My beautiful Dad lost his life at Middleton Broom Colliery in 1966 age 43. I miss him even more today. We have a long line of miners who went all over the world - coal, ironstone, tin, copper and gold. I’m proud of them all, but thankful that no family members are miners today.
Amazing voice beautiful sonds, fantastic 🍀❤️ dear 💯💐💐💐 BRAVO

What microphone / pickups did you use to record this? Wow really great sounding quality :-)
Wow the beginning reminds me of a game Melodie. From what is it ?
"Gleanntáin Ghlas' Ghaoth Dobhair" is a song in the Irish language. I think the melody has been used in other things though, such as Paddy’s Green Shamrock Shore and Erin Shore.
@@2002music I know this melody from Lough Erin Shore played by The Corrs.
might be 'Mass Effect 3 Soundtrack - I Was Lost Without You' beginnig parts have some similarities :)
WAY better than the original song
This could be a legit NieR Series OST... srsly
I thought this melody was called Erin Shore? Am I mistaken?
You are correct. Many Irish songs go by more than one name and many melodies have more than one set of lyrics. This one has many! thesession.org/tunes/5936
@@2002music Wow, thank you for replying! May I just say, I absolutely love your work! I'm keen to see a performance of yours someday but unfortunately, I live in the UK and Texas is very expensive to get to!!
@@edredwhittingham4417 We would love to come to the UK someday. Our new album hit #1 on One World Music Radio in the UK last month! But you're right. It's 7,510 km from Texas!
@@2002music Wait you're in Texas? Yall ever do shows near Tyler or Dallas?
@@tarisco614 2002 doesn't perform very often, but Sarah has a lot of gigs. Usually about 30 miles from Dallas.
What kind of harp is this?
It's a Thormahlen Serenade
@@2002music Thank you so much for the response
Thanks asmongold

This could come straight out of NieR: Automata
