    MSX was huge here in Brazil. Penguin Adventure and Knightmare were amazing games, top shelf Konami efforts. I love MSX, had one, hundreds of good games.

    I used to like a game called Shark Hunter. They found a prototype of it for the Phillips Videopac but it was only officially released for MSX

    I still have my Sony HITBIT MSX with all the games. I loved Penguin Adventure, Knightmare, F1 Spirit and Nemesis. I also purchased the Yamaha FM module and created an adaptor that allows it to be used with the Sony. Great memories.

    Nice. I thought about getting an MSX back in the day, but for its price was disappointed that it did not have a 80 column mode like the BBC or CPC. Then when they included it on the MSX2, to me the Atari ST looked like a much better option.

    I would love to see a sizable and official MSX collection someday (with Hole in One Golf) on Evercade or something. Nice layout - nice video.

    Great video and quite interesting choices of games, with a bit of what the original MSX can offer. Perhaps this video can serve also as demonstration of how much this humble system could go beyond the capabilities of a ZX Spectrum for the newcomers. The lazy European Spectrum ports of arcade games on MSX are, definitely, disappointing, and with the exclusive games originally developed in Japan you can have a better picture of what the MSX could do.
    Among them all, the Aliens game is the one I should look for to play...! I haven't played it so far... You mentioned some big favorites of mine here: Knightmare, Nemesis 3, Guardic, Penguin Adventure (a masterpiece of the MSX, indeed).
    Hope to see a "10 Amazing Exclusives" episode for the MSX 2!

    Things moved so quick back then. In the UK we even had a weekly computer magazine. Early on WHSmith grabbed a slice of the 8-bit scene and I can still remember the kids crowded round the Spectrum display model. For some reason this was put next to the computer magazine section so it could be a bit of a mission if all you wanted was a copy of Popular Computing Weekly. The MSX format looked attractive as did the build quality and I liked the idea of an industry standard but the spec was a bit average to say the least. They seemed to think all they had to do was turn up and we would buy it. Big mistake. The machine had to be significantly better than what was already available and it wasn't.

      @TheLairdsLair  Před rokem +2

      Those were the days! Although weirdly none of the Smiths near me sold computers or games, they were too small, my best memories are of independent stores, Software Plus and the big Boots in St. Albans city centre.

    Great video! You know these days a lot of ColecoVision homebrew, and probrew games are actually ports of MSX original library games. This is possible because the chip set used in the ColecoVision is actually an earlier predecessor of the MSX standard chip set.

    Msx was a great machine i had a toshiba msx and a sony hitbit hb75 .With so many brands supporting the msx machines i would have thought it would have done even better in the uk a big shame were some of the games that came out being lazy ports of spectrum games and never really showing the msx and what it was capable of .

      @TheLairdsLair  Před rokem +2

      Yeah, I had wanted one for ages but could never find one at a decent price, then I saw one on eBay from Italy for £40 and even with the £25 extra for shipping it was still far cheaper than any I had found in the UK. It was a really nice JVC model too, not the really common Toshiba HX-10 you usually seem to see come up.

    Nice collection of games, some of which I played when I was young. I grew up with MSX, very fond memories of it! However, as such, please play Japanese games (I guess all you showed) on 60Hz instead of 50Hz, as they are intended and to do them justice. Very easy in emulators of course, and using VDP(10)=0 on an MSX2 before booting your game. It really makes a difference!
    I think though the actual game video is too small, only about 1/3 of the screen is showing actual gameplay. I feel that is actually the most important thing of 'check these games' videos. Just my opinion :-)

      I used the default MSX1 mode on the Blue MSX emulator, it didn't say if it was PAL or NTSC.

      @@TheLairdsLair BlueMSX defaults to PAL, sadly. And it's an awfully old emulator with lots of bugs. You'll be better served by openMSX or webMSX.

    When I first read about MSX back in the '80s I was afraid that the new standard would take over the world and that my beloved CPC would become obsolete over night. It was over a decade later that I finally added an MSX to my collection: the horrible Philips VG-8010

      @@TheLairdsLair I tested in my emulator. You are using 50Hz VDP and the japanese games are 60Hz. The games in the video are at 50Hz and in slow motion as if you were playing Japanese NTSC games on a European MSX PAL. That's why it's running slower.
