  • Walter Cronkite was interviewed in 1999 for the Archive of American Television. In this excerpt from his multi-hour interview at www.emmytvlegends.org/intervie..., he reflects on the importance of the only on-air commentary he ever gave for the CBS Evening News, regarding his views on America's involvement in the Vietnam War. As a result, he learned Lyndon Johnson later to say "if we've lost Cronkite, we've lost Middle America."

Walter Cronkite did what journalists NEVER do today: offer their sincere opinion. He said the Vietnam war wasn't winnable and he was RIGHT.

Walter Cronkite was honest. No wonder he was considered the most trusted man in America. Certainly, Lyndon Johnson wasn't.

The Vietnam war was winnable.....We kicked the shit out of them at Tet, we constantly did. We would have won if our damn people had a spine and let our brothers do what they were trained to do
