      I have been trying, for years, to get up to singing a normal 3-4 hour gig, The most I could do was 1-2 hours. Then finally in May, I could only suddenly sing for 15 minutes! I waited form May till Nov to get in to see an ENT doctor. The put the scope in my throat and found out I do not have nodules just that my cords do not close all the way and some swelling. OK SO now what do I do about it to fix it and get singing and get up to being able to sing for a full 3-4 hour gig?

    Hydration! That's the best vocal advice that I've ever heard. I would put this under every vocal video as I always forget about it. So my voice gets dry (like a dry reed: not breathy, but plain, harsh, and dull). And I even managed to get stylistic benefits out of it and find some strength in such expression. But at the same time I have a need to be gentle to myself, take care, nourish my body and soul and, therefore drink some water.
    I know that there is a lot to learn in terms of voice in different dimensions. It is a vocal wisdom about yourself, communication, feelings, personality, past and people around you. But the basics are simple, as elementary as wind and water.
    PS (for somebody who has issues like mine): Besides just water drinking, try not to breath with your mouth. Yes, It could be hard, just stick with it at least while singing (you can do this while you talk, can't you?)

I could not speak at all for the first ten days and slowly my voice is returning. However, it's not completely back yet and I am terrified. I cannot lose the gift I've been given. I am very sad and I hope that it's just taking time to fully heal. I am steaming three times a day and use a nebulizer once a day. Hello! Thank you so much for these useful tips. I am a singer (Indian classical, which is a strenuous form), and I have previously had voice issues due to strain and acid reflux. I have been to a laryngologist years ago (after many trips to the ENT which were not so useful) and since then, have managed my singing habits quite efficiently. My health, diets, and other habits are pretty good. Until last week, I was in good vocal shape and was able to practice well. However, 3 days ago I developed dryness and cough whenever I sing (even non-strenuous kind of singing) for 5 minutes. I am not otherwise sick. I have a performance in 4 days and am on vocal rest now. Trying steaming, lots of hydration, but very concerned about the long gig coming up (which I was so excited for because I am performing after a log gap). Do you have any tips for quick relief from this coughing reflex and dryness - something that will prevent me from going into a coughing fit while singing? Thank you!

      @healthyvoicetips  Před 8 měsíci

      You left the comment 3 weeks ago. I hope your performance went well. Sometimes, health issues creep up and our voice is the first one to notice changes. Also, our worries can affect our voice functions. Lastly, performing after a long gap can also affect the voice. I hope you figured it our yourself. All the best.

    Hey Katarina, once again thank you for ALL YOUR VIDEOs on vocal health. They are quite helpful and you have the lifelong gratitude of several of us.
    Quick question: in this video, you mentioned using a nebulizer to hydrate vocal folds. Would you recommend nebulising as having the same benefits as steaming, though? The nebulizer will be throwing up water at regular temperature (more like a mist) than the steamer, would it not? Would that be an equal substitute, or something that you recommend only for people who don't have access to steamers?
    I have a phobia from childhood against using steamers, hence asking the question.

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  Před rokem

      That is a great question. Research now tells us that nebulizers may actually be more effective than steamers in hydrating the vocal folds due to the size of the water droplets.

    Question!! Hi! I've been rehearsing for a show for 3+ hrs/day for the past six weeks and its a lot of singing in the belt register. The past few days my voice has really been feeling fatigued by it, and my quality of tone and range have been decreasing. I'm going to go on vocal rest for a few days, but I have to speak at my job. Will speaking softer be better than speaking loudly? I'm also getting a steamer to hydrate that way, and I drink lots of water. The show opens next weekend, and I am nervous that my voice will not be healed. Do you have any other tips? Also, I have worked very hard to learn how to sing without strain; and I don't think I've been singing in an unhealthy way per se, but the sheer amount of vocal use has been exhausting. Is it possible to get vocal fatique without doing anything improper, or is vocal fatique a sure sign that some part of your voice mechanism is being strained?
    Thank you so much! I'm so glad I found your videos.

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  Před 2 lety +3

      Hi Joe, I know that my answer is late and I hope that you are doing well with your voice. To answer your question: the sheer amount of voice use can be the reason for vocal fatigue. So, you can be doing everything right and still have voice problems. It's like professional runners still get injuries and sprained ankles because they use their bodies to max. In your case, I would highly recommend vocal pacing. Knowing when and how much you are going to use your voice each day, each hour of the day and preserve your voice as much as possible. It is very common for professional performers to go on a complete rest right after their performance is done and also the following morning. Because you work during the day, using a soft voice is a good idea. But also lot of voice breaks and preserving your voice as much as possible.

    Hi Katarina! Love your videos and how incredibly helpful you are. THANK YOU for all you do.
    My questions is this: I am a singer and voice teacher. I also have a handicapped dog :( He fell a couple times this year, and hurt himself and I screamed/yelled because I was scared when he fell.
    Since those 2 occasions, my voice has hurt every week. I think it's because I strained my voice, but I have not been able to rest because I teach singing EVERY WEEK.
    My symptom is ONLY that I feel a mild sore throat. I have no other symptoms (my singing sounds the same, my range is the same, etc)
    I talked to an SLP and I have been doing the same SOVT exercises in your videos-- I have not felt any relief.
    I am about to take 1 week off of teaching and singing for vocal rest, I hope it helps!
    Have you ever heard of someone having only this one symptom, and no others???
    THANK YOU!

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  Před 2 lety +2

      Yes, pain is a very complex phenomenon. And it makes sense that it happened when you got scared. Pain does not mean that your muscles or tissues are getting damaged when you speak (if this is confirmed by a laryngologist who did not see any structural damage on your vocal folds). Your body is trying to protect you and will signal pain to avoid what you have experienced in the past. Your body does not recognize that you are not going to hurt yourself every time you are going to talk. It has a memory of those occasions when you screamed and probably strained your voice at that time. So, yes, maybe a voice break will be helpful but also work on the emotional part of the voice - I made a few videos on that topic. Sitting with the feeling of pain or other emotions to desensitize the body. I hope this makes sense to you.

    Hello Katarina. Do you have any tips for Reinke’s Edema sufferers? I’m a singer who’s just been diagnosed with this condition which is basically a chronic laryngitis…it is really annoying.
    Thanks a lot for your videos!

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  Před 4 měsíci

      First, what is the cause of Reinke's edema in your case? Is it smoking or voice overuse or something else? If it is smoking, can you find help to change that habit? If it is overuse, can you optimize your vocal habits? In any case, working with a voice therapist would be beneficial as you can find some exercises to optimize vocal function. Because you are a singer, I would also consider looking at your vocal technique during singing. I hope this helps.

    My voice is strained. I’m a singer and I sing everyday ( practice and shows). My genre includes power singing so I’m comfortable singing those. I can hit high notes when I’m singing rock or something that sort but whenever I’m trying to sing high notes for soft songs I can only use falsetto or head voice because my mix voice can’t reach that. After singing i feel jaw and neck pain and irritation. How to recover this ?
    P.S = practicing Indian classical on the higher notes hurts.

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  Před rokem +4

      Thank you for your question. Based on the information your provided, it seems that your technique how you approach high notes may be responsible for jaw and neck pain and irritation. There is no simple answer for this because the technique can include many different things - what does your jaw do when you sing those notes? Does it have to move? Does it have to be in that position? Can you engage the bigger body muscles to alleviate those symptoms? Are your false vocal folds retracted to avoid constriction? How is the vocal fold closure? Singing high notes with ease is a learned skill and many good voice teachers can help develop this skill. Of course, this takes self-awareness, explorations and time.

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Sarah, good question. As a teacher, you are considered a voice professional because you rely on your voice for work every day. Hoarseness is a symptom that is present in many different vocal issues so just by listening, nobody would be able to tell you what is really going on in your voice (structural or functional problem). I highly recommend that you go and have your voice evaluated by a laryngologist. Hoarseness on a regular basis is a very good reason to speak to a voice specialist and start learning how to prevent that from happening. You want to give your voice what it deserves so that it can serve you at work and at home for many years to come. There is much more you can do than vocal rest to help your voice. I hope this makes sense.

      I am sorry Bashir that you are dealing with these issues. You are doing everything that the doctor tells you and no improvement. At this point, I would recommend that you work with a voice therapist because it is possible that you may be doing the exercises with strain and constriction, which is not helping. It would be good if someone could listen to you and see you while you are doing the exercises and tell you how to adjust them. Maybe you need to have more breath flow during the exercises or less vocal fold closure.

      This is an interesting question! Smiling as the only method of improving your voice will probably not work 100% but smiling in general is always helpful.

      It may take some time to get your voice back after sickness. I suggest that you do some sirens or lip trills but do not force anything. If your problems persist, have your voice checked. Just in case.
