How To Heal, Restore, And Rehabilitate Your Voice - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
Medically speaking, from a health and wellness standpoint, we are living in some very difficult times.
With the advent of COVID-19, other respiratory, mucus, acid reflux, cold and flu (and just overall health-related issues), it's become more and more important to address these issues for singing.
I am not a doctor and I make no medical claims.
I do claim to be a vocal coach to literally thousands of singers, and have worked through considerable singing challenges for singers in these challenging times.
In this video, I start the conversation by addressing many of the aspects of the problems singers are faced with in today's singing climate.
I do have a full-blown health and wellness Voice Repair "Heal From Home" course for those interested in taking this subject further (you can find it here: kentamplinvocalacademy.com/vo....
I hope this video gives you hope and inspiration on your singing journey.

Finally somebody has the foresight to address this issue that all vocalists encounter at some point and perhaps even more frequently than the audience was aware of.
Now I never sounded very good to begin with. So sometimes when Im struggling, cracking, and lowering my range, people think I'm improving.
But guys like Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson and so many others seemed to have this super natural ability to never have a cold or phlegm or stretched vocal cord etc. Even while doing 2 hour shows night after night in all kinds of weather.
I always knew there was a secret and it sure as hell wasn't a joint and a beer before the opener.
Thank you so much for this one Ken.
    You rock!

Would you mind also giving some tips for healing from poor cord closure? (as in - not nodules or polyps or swollen cords - just cords not coming together all the way as a result of incorrect singing)?
It's quite difficult to find some healing exercises for the case when there is no swelling in the cords and no nodules and such either but the cords still don't come together properly. Or will these exercises you recommended here also do the job?

Ken, I have run into an issue. My voice has been excellent up until I recently had some sort of illness. It felt like the flu for about 24 hours. The aftermath was an extremely hoarse voice.. As the hoarseness began to get better, I noticed I'm not able to sing falsetto or really anything above the lower registers. It really has me worried. Ancient Nutrion - that's Dr. Josh Axe. He has a lot of very interesting info on his site.
I took this years Christmas chicken and made bone broth of the leftovers. That is supposed to contain a lot of collagen as well. Need to cook for a long time though. Not 20-30 min, rather 10-20 hours or even more. I also take hydrolyzed beef collagen type 1, 2 and 3. Every day.
Just back from practise and all went well tonight. 12 months in the course and now I'm starting to learn how to pace myself for recording. You learn as you go.
I noticed the headvoice is really crazy after months of training. There is like a block altitude between C5 and C6 where I can do pretty much anything with it.
The program gives you a lot of strength! If you're on the fence I can tell you it will bring results given that you put the necessary time into it.
I also noticed during the stamina workouts that my use of air has gone down significantly. I didn't even aim specifically for that. It has done that automatically after months of practise. Fantastic!

Going back over your videos and stumbled on this one again and have to say that back in February I had a bout of laryngitis that kind of came out of nowhere. Didn't know if it was allergies (that I almost never have) or a low grade flu, but woke up a few days after rehearsal and no voice. At that point I didn't realize how much I was starting to enjoy singing until I couldn't and was freaked out about it. Anyway, I had been watching your videos and enjoying the improvements in my singing and saw this one. I immediately broke the piggy bank and ordered the Healing From Home videos and started in. After about three to four weeks range was coming back a few notes at a time and I was able to navigate most of the songs I would sing but had to watch it around the passaggio since that was the worst area. Now, four months later I'm getting great results especially in my belt register and am super pleased with the results. Still doing the drills and, having re-watched your vowel shaping stream session, I have renewed respect for the ah-oh-oooh type exercises (that I wasn't a big fan of until now.) Cannot recommend enough that course for anyone who has had a train wreck with their voice as mine has come back and is even a lot better than it was in some areas. Like the other post says it's cheap at several times the price because the ability to sing well again is worth it. Also did the collagen and will probably pick that up again since I'm an old geazer and it definitely helped. Loving your videos Ken and thank you so much.

Hey Ken! I lost my voice after singing back to back days while I was sick a little over a month ago. Since then any time I talk a lot or even attempt to sing I feel my voice go out very quickly. I also Coach basketball so it is hard to really rest my voice a lot. I am wondering if I should do these exercises when my voice is fading? Should try to rest my voice for a full day? Been avoiding singing but I feel like my voice should be back by now since it’s been a month so just curious if you might have any advice? Thanks!

Dang Ken, this is awesome. I didn't realize you had the separate course. After c19 2 years ago my doc theorized that I had vagus nerve damage effecting my vocal chords. My voice hasn't improved in 2 years but I haven't really done anything specific - and just kind of accepted this outcome I guess.
Edit: I should read your course emails more closely, I assumed it was the course I had already bought. That's on me!

Piano player, I began siging along some covers 2 years ago. I thought I was mediocre but I discovered I got good pitch. But my vocal chords not always respond the same. I am a coffee drinker, does it make my voice worse or not ? A warm glass of water is new to me and I'm gonna try it...thanks Ken...I have to choose the best register voice to suite mine , for instance, with Billy Joel no problem, with Lennon no problem but McCartney it's more difficult. When I play and sign Small town Boy, I just can't reach the higher notes. I saw you perform More than a feeling, and I was very impressed. Is it possible for a nobody like me to reach those notes, I'm 62 of age.

Brad Delp's vocals are a high bar for goal-setting, but you might be amazed at the results you could achieve if you set your mind and body into motion in that direction. We're all somebody. We're all capable of more than we might give ourselves credit for. You'll never know unless you try. KenTamplinVocalAcademy.com/

Hi Ken. Thanks for this video. I've been dealing with some vocal issues for nearly 2 years now. Higher range has just not been there like it once was. I'm going to try these exercises for a while. I'd also like to find a good collagen. I went to the site of the one you mentioned, but there are several. Is there one in particular you like over the others?

Hey Ken thanks for these Videos! I feel these exercises working! I did however “loose” most of my falsetto/reinforced falsetto and I don’t want to push in my mix to hit the top notes of my range ( around F#5- C6 or so ) ! Would it be beneficial to do all of these exercises in my falsetto to get it back to being healthy and strong or should I do something else! Thanks 🙏🏼

Busted LOL every time you would go to say hold back that air every time you would say that I was just rolling into more air that's when you know somebody knows what they're talking about because he knows exactly the time throughout the scale you're probably going to start using more air probably no better vocal instructor out there. first album was the greatest.

A couple questions regarding the information here, as well as in you Heal from Home course.
I lost my voice about a month ago after a cold. I've mostly recovered, but I'm still experiencing a few issues, including:
    - Light hissing sound when singing, especially in head voice.
    - I can sing a note softly in head voice on a closed vowel, but when I shift into an open vowel, or try for more cord closure for a wider mixed voice sound, my voice won't allow it.
This region of the voice in particular used to feel pretty flexible and versatile, but now it just feels stiff and dry.
Is it common for issues in this region of the voice to persist the longest?
Is this something your Heal from Home helps to remedy specifically?
I'll certainly be looking into your course, and any advice or tips you can offer in the meantime would be much appreciated.

    • @kentamplin

Your voice should not hurt, but singing with rasp improperly could be the cause. It is entirely possible that these exercises could be helpful to you. Make sure that you use your voice gently. Singing with too much force can be damaging.

I have an implant and there are leads that go to my Vegas nerve at the base of my brain, however, to get there it goes up my neck and rubs my vocal cords. The implant goes off about every 30 seconds to keep me from having seizures, I still have them anyway, just not the ones that could kill me, which is why the implant. But ever since the implant I have no range pretty much or my voice cracks. On days they adjust the implant I lose my voice for 30 minutes to a couple hours. If I sing for very long my voice disappears too. As a result I run the sound board at church instead of singing.
