How To Heal, Restore, And Rehabilitate Your Voice - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
Medically speaking, from a health and wellness standpoint, we are living in some very difficult times.
With the advent of COVID-19, other respiratory, mucus, acid reflux, cold and flu (and just overall health-related issues), it's become more and more important to address these issues for singing.
I am not a doctor and I make no medical claims.
I do claim to be a vocal coach to literally thousands of singers, and have worked through considerable singing challenges for singers in these challenging times.
In this video, I start the conversation by addressing many of the aspects of the problems singers are faced with in today's singing climate.
I do have a full-blown health and wellness Voice Repair "Heal From Home" course for those interested in taking this subject further (you can find it here: kentamplinvocalacademy.com/vo....
I hope this video gives you hope and inspiration on your singing journey.

Heal from Home is amazing! It helped me restore and extend my voice from damage from poor choices and autoimmune issues. Worth the money at four times the cost.
Thank you for the feedback, stephen! I am glad the program has helped you.
Finally somebody has the foresight to address this issue that all vocalists encounter at some point and perhaps even more frequently than the audience was aware of.
Now I never sounded very good to begin with. So sometimes when Im struggling, cracking, and lowering my range, people think I'm improving.
But guys like Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson and so many others seemed to have this super natural ability to never have a cold or phlegm or stretched vocal cord etc. Even while doing 2 hour shows night after night in all kinds of weather.
I always knew there was a secret and it sure as hell wasn't a joint and a beer before the opener.
Thank you so much for this one Ken.
You rock!
I found you and I’m thankful 😊
My voice is broken from overuse and I would say the loss of collagen with the arrival of menopause. I am hopeful that I might be able to heal after listening to your video.
Me too....I've just now figured out I believe this is my problem too

I have to say, I follow many different vocal coaches here on CZcams. Ken Tamplin is the only one that talks about vocal rehab! That’s why he’s the world’s best vocal coach, in my opinion.
Lost my upper register and most of my head voice after I caught Covid and the thought of never being able to sing like I used to gets me way down, so hopefully doing what Ken suggests can get me on the right track to healing. 😊
Same thing happened to me and i use my voice to make a living,it has me really down
Me too. The coughing from Covid kills my singing voice. I am waiting to see a specialist.
Had the same issue dudes, been tryin a bunch of different stuff, I’m pretty good with the exercises but bein a smoker (I’m tryna quit), I wanna find extra ways to keep my voice healthy so hopefully this works
Same thing happened for me but lost my mid range. Has it helped?
@near5839 Still haven't gotten my old head voice/falsetto back, but my chest voice is getting better and my upper register is sloooooowly getting back to where it was. 🤙🏽 Though I've also been doing vocalises and other stuff in addition to this. Is your vocal loss also covid related?
I’m not a singer but I’m always tuning in when Ken Tamplin post!
Thank you so much
I had post nasal drip and I've done head voice exercises for 30 minutes today using tons of air...
Hi Master! I was diagnosed with a single vocal fold paralysis. Probably from an infection or Covid... your "Voice Repair" is doing magic to get back on track. Thanks!
Thank you, Francisco!
Thank you Ken .my brother ....needed to see this
Hi Ken, I've been watching your videos and started my CZcams channel with some covers. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, all your tips really help ! Cheers from London 💕😊
Perfect timing Sir Ken, thanks as always 👍💚💚💚
Your music is amazing Ken. 🤘🏽
Great information Ken thanks buddy
That’s really great! It certainly helped me! Thank you!!
Thanks Ken
Every time I have a question or a doubt about how to prepare and train for singing I come back to your videos. Thank you for all the free knowledge you share, Ken!
Thank you so much for teaching about the importance of taking care of your throat and vocal cords, I am currently trying to get my voice recovered. This helps so much!!
i love the relaxed feeling of this video especially, one of my favourites!!
Just getting over a chesty cough , did notice a reduction in brightness lately so need to do more of those exercises awesome advice Ken!!
mrcabassa here, climbing out of one more vocal valley. Picked up your vocal repair a few years ago. As always thanks, and it works if you work it. I had an awesome head voice in the 80's and sang the all the high harmonies to the female lead in the band at the time. it's coming back!
Good video i put this one in my favorite's
This was so awesome, Ken, and very helpful!!!
The Lip Trills are my top priority, the best way to wake up the voice… True Fact Here!!!!
Rock On!!!
thanks for this and happy new year to you and your family
Happy new year, Richard!
Thanks so much
Awesome 👏
Wow! This warm-up was amazing! Especially, licking the lips before the lip trills. I am getting over a cold and flu and have been suffering from congestion and breathing problems for a long time. I am finally going to bite the bullet and get a septoplasty for my deviated septum early next year. Have you done any videos on singers and septoplasty or rhinoplasty surgeries?
Great info. Thanks, man!
Hey ken, been using your cource for about month now and its great, one problem i face fairly often as a singer is throat ulcers, ive had 2 in the past week and i think it's because ive been doing your warm-ups everyday (which really help me) and my throat probably isint used to being used quite thid much.
Thanks Ken !!!!
You're always awesome! Keep rocking my friend!
You rock, Spear!
Thank you.
I appreciate you and the content you do. Thank you
My pleasure, SaltySK!
Thank you
Thank you Ken so much!
My pleasure, Merita!
I watched this about 6 weeks ago and started the collagen you recommended. I've been taking 1 scoop each day and just finished my first container. I have noticed significant improvement in my vocal flexibility. Thank you.
Thank you coach i have to do this i have horse voice crach most time when i sing and lower key hard to hits high notes.
Been doing these exercises -almost every day- since you published the clip 'Quickstart Vocal Warm Up For Guys' about a year ago. Still hating the lip-roll exercise though (pressing my chicks to do it), but definitively the three exercises work like a charm... if one does them correctly.
Thanks so much for sharing all your free content Ken. Really appreciated.
Take care. Bye.
Ken, I really loved this video where you are in your control room and I can see the recording studio behind you, I really miss the days where I played with my band at motorcycle rally's where all you saw was a crowd and no real faces. I was only the Bassist and did a little backing voices. I need to do my best to raise the money to attend some of your courses. The problem is I live in South Africa and you are in USA but WHEN I can I would also like to visit my Mother an Oldest Sister in North Alaska, I think she said Cohagin, It's a little Island where NASA launch their satalites from. My brother-in-law and his son are computer geniouses and are both employed by NASA.
This is awesome! I am recovering from the flu and have no voice currently but I'm supposed to sing next week 😬 thank you so much for this! I'm going to have to check out your full course later because I deal with a chronic cough and phlegm and would love to work on my voice more in general.
Love this! I greatly appreciate vids like this cuz I've had/done so much damage to my voice! Willfully dense on that I guess, but not anymore! Thanks, Sir Ken! Rock on my friend!👍🤟😎🔥💕💜🌍
Glad it was helpfu, Sarah!
Hey Ken, thanks for the video, really useful stuff!
Would you mind also giving some tips for healing from poor cord closure? (as in - not nodules or polyps or swollen cords - just cords not coming together all the way as a result of incorrect singing)?
It's quite difficult to find some healing exercises for the case when there is no swelling in the cords and no nodules and such either but the cords still don't come together properly. Or will these exercises you recommended here also do the job?
Thank you for the wake up! There isn't much online about Extreme situations of vocal burnout, I Shit the bed last year when I burned out my vocal chords by getting drunk and sleepwalking hardcore. I was screaming in my dream at someone attacking me . I apparently woke up with no voice and holes in the wall. I lost my voice for about 4 months. It's still all whispery and I lost my motivation in life. It's the second time its happened in my life. I will be contacting you when I get some money saved up
Been keeping up with you, your videos and your lessons very well done here keep it up Rock On! Once u bought up the E vowel I was like "Wow I remember when Gary Catona taught me the vowels for this exact thing!" Brought back some amazing lessons and happy I and others have you to help us with our beautiful instruments of ours. Much love Stay safe. 😁👍💙
Thank you, JD & AJ!
Well Ken, I recently commented on Your 20 best metal vocalist video & made a statement that even though You’re the master, I’ll never get back my Matijevic voice. Then I find this video. We’re gonna find out 🤘
Excellent, useful information that every singer can use! Thank you.
Thanks, Bob!
thank you:)
Awesome video! Best advice I've got for healing my voice! I also found that pineapple juice has bromelain in it which is really good for the voice too. These tips were amazing
Hey @Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy Thank you for the information and I'm looking forward to learning more from you, as I signed up for your singing course last night 👍
Thank you, DJ! Looking forward to hearing how you are doing with the course!
Thank you Ken
You are very welcome, Tyler!
This is very important stuff for everyone, especially if you often give speeches, do teaching or use your voice s lot in phone - actually if you have hearing difficulty and therefore use your voice in a bad way. Very good walk through, Ken! 😁👍
Thanks for your comment, Titti!
I love analog.
I think my big problem is confidence. I have had my voice put down so much when I sing with my favorites that now I am terrified at the thought my neighbors will hear me practicing and put me down.
Ken, or any of you out there, how do I get over those put downs and try.
Nice!!!❤

Ken, I have run into an issue. My voice has been excellent up until I recently had some sort of illness. It felt like the flu for about 24 hours. The aftermath was an extremely hoarse voice.. As the hoarseness began to get better, I noticed I'm not able to sing falsetto or really anything above the lower registers. It really has me worried. My throat does feel irritated and sore, but it has been almost a month with little improvement. Any suggestions?
@Biggerbyte Please take a look at my voice repair program, see if it might be a good fit for you. kentamplinvocalacademy.com/voice-repair/
Really helpful Ken ❤
Glad it was helpful Williams!
Healing my voice from covid, lost my upper range and im trying to get it back, thank you Ken
Have you taken a look at my Voice Repair program? See if it might be a good fit: kentamplinvocalacademy.com/voice-repair/
@@kentamplin I am in the same situation. Which video would you recommend? (I see there are a lot of options between vocal nodules, surgery, etc..)
Ken,I lost my voice after Hawking Beer at Mile High Stadium in Denver. But the Ironic thing I sang in a music group with Terry Clark from Marantha.
Ancient Nutrion - that's Dr. Josh Axe. He has a lot of very interesting info on his site.
I took this years Christmas chicken and made bone broth of the leftovers. That is supposed to contain a lot of collagen as well. Need to cook for a long time though. Not 20-30 min, rather 10-20 hours or even more. I also take hydrolyzed beef collagen type 1, 2 and 3. Every day.
Just back from practise and all went well tonight. 12 months in the course and now I'm starting to learn how to pace myself for recording. You learn as you go.
I noticed the headvoice is really crazy after months of training. There is like a block altitude between C5 and C6 where I can do pretty much anything with it.
The program gives you a lot of strength! If you're on the fence I can tell you it will bring results given that you put the necessary time into it.
I also noticed during the stamina workouts that my use of air has gone down significantly. I didn't even aim specifically for that. It has done that automatically after months of practise. Fantastic!
I had a parathyroidectomy 3 days ago and I was so worried I wouldn't be able to sing again. The first thing I did when I woke up in recovery was test a little humming. LOL I wanted to start vocal rehab this week and your video is just perfect! Thank you for making it and for your suggestions on supplements to help moisten the vocal chords. xoxoxo
Take a look at my Voice Repair program, see if it might be a good fit for you. kentamplinvocalacademy.com/voice-repair/
Hi Ken, enjoying watching and learning from your videos . Just wondering if you have plans to post anything related to the effect of alcohol/ smoking as a singer ? cheers
I have nothing specific planned right now.
All great advice, but I laughed when you did the lip drill.🙂
Going back over your videos and stumbled on this one again and have to say that back in February I had a bout of laryngitis that kind of came out of nowhere. Didn't know if it was allergies (that I almost never have) or a low grade flu, but woke up a few days after rehearsal and no voice. At that point I didn't realize how much I was starting to enjoy singing until I couldn't and was freaked out about it. Anyway, I had been watching your videos and enjoying the improvements in my singing and saw this one. I immediately broke the piggy bank and ordered the Healing From Home videos and started in. After about three to four weeks range was coming back a few notes at a time and I was able to navigate most of the songs I would sing but had to watch it around the passaggio since that was the worst area. Now, four months later I'm getting great results especially in my belt register and am super pleased with the results. Still doing the drills and, having re-watched your vowel shaping stream session, I have renewed respect for the ah-oh-oooh type exercises (that I wasn't a big fan of until now.) Cannot recommend enough that course for anyone who has had a train wreck with their voice as mine has come back and is even a lot better than it was in some areas. Like the other post says it's cheap at several times the price because the ability to sing well again is worth it. Also did the collagen and will probably pick that up again since I'm an old geazer and it definitely helped. Loving your videos Ken and thank you so much.
Hey Ken! Hope Santa was good to you and your family. Looking forward to some Jon Anderson and YES in 2023!🎤🎤🎤😎
Same to you!
@@kentamplin 👍😎
Just bought some of those gels :) thanks
Hi Ken, can you please do a video about ZP Theart I found him to be an amazing singer with sang things that I couldn't even imagine a guy could get like in the ending of above the winter moonlight of dragonforce, though he struggled live because of his lifestyle
Thanks Ken❤ one love my brother
Me also same
I got the flu about 3 months ago and my voice hasnt been the same since. It is getting better but slowly. Its depressing
Hey Ken! I lost my voice after singing back to back days while I was sick a little over a month ago. Since then any time I talk a lot or even attempt to sing I feel my voice go out very quickly. I also Coach basketball so it is hard to really rest my voice a lot. I am wondering if I should do these exercises when my voice is fading? Should try to rest my voice for a full day? Been avoiding singing but I feel like my voice should be back by now since it’s been a month so just curious if you might have any advice? Thanks!
Dang Ken, this is awesome. I didn't realize you had the separate course. After c19 2 years ago my doc theorized that I had vagus nerve damage effecting my vocal chords. My voice hasn't improved in 2 years but I haven't really done anything specific - and just kind of accepted this outcome I guess.
Edit: I should read your course emails more closely, I assumed it was the course I had already bought. That's on me!
Yes, I have a course that is targeted at teaching you exercises to help rehabilitate voices that are in need of some TLC.
@@kentamplin Ken I watched the video and I got a little misty, I was like
Dang I used to do these scales with Ken in the car on the way to practice and church!! (The vocal warm up YT video in my favorites)
Thanks for the info, Ken!!
Piano player, I began siging along some covers 2 years ago. I thought I was mediocre but I discovered I got good pitch. But my vocal chords not always respond the same. I am a coffee drinker, does it make my voice worse or not ? A warm glass of water is new to me and I'm gonna try it...thanks Ken...I have to choose the best register voice to suite mine , for instance, with Billy Joel no problem, with Lennon no problem but McCartney it's more difficult. When I play and sign Small town Boy, I just can't reach the higher notes. I saw you perform More than a feeling, and I was very impressed. Is it possible for a nobody like me to reach those notes, I'm 62 of age.
Brad Delp's vocals are a high bar for goal-setting, but you might be amazed at the results you could achieve if you set your mind and body into motion in that direction. We're all somebody. We're all capable of more than we might give ourselves credit for. You'll never know unless you try. KenTamplinVocalAcademy.com/
Hi Ken. Thanks for this video. I've been dealing with some vocal issues for nearly 2 years now. Higher range has just not been there like it once was. I'm going to try these exercises for a while. I'd also like to find a good collagen. I went to the site of the one you mentioned, but there are several. Is there one in particular you like over the others?
I use Dr. Axe.
My problem is not singing for almost 2 years! I went to record today and had to have my cousin smooth out my voice. I used to be able to sing like Freddie (he taught me i had a voice) now i sing like tom waits… kinda 😂😤
LOve ittttt
Hey Ken thanks for these Videos! I feel these exercises working! I did however “loose” most of my falsetto/reinforced falsetto and I don’t want to push in my mix to hit the top notes of my range ( around F#5- C6 or so ) ! Would it be beneficial to do all of these exercises in my falsetto to get it back to being healthy and strong or should I do something else! Thanks 🙏🏼

Aww i watched this right after a shower 😅
your lip roll seems effortless.
Do these vocal exercises have to be done in chest voice in order to see results? Or can they be done in other vocal registers as well?
Hi Ken! Thank you for all your awesome videos. What about vegan collagen supplements as an alternative? The ones that contain all amino acids present in animal collagen. Also, are liposomol glutathione supplements as effective as the injections in damaged vocal folds?

Busted LOL every time you would go to say hold back that air every time you would say that I was just rolling into more air that's when you know somebody knows what they're talking about because he knows exactly the time throughout the scale you're probably going to start using more air probably no better vocal instructor out there. first album was the greatest.
A couple questions regarding the information here, as well as in you Heal from Home course.
I lost my voice about a month ago after a cold. I've mostly recovered, but I'm still experiencing a few issues, including:
- Light hissing sound when singing, especially in head voice.
- I can sing a note softly in head voice on a closed vowel, but when I shift into an open vowel, or try for more cord closure for a wider mixed voice sound, my voice won't allow it.
This region of the voice in particular used to feel pretty flexible and versatile, but now it just feels stiff and dry.
Is it common for issues in this region of the voice to persist the longest?
Is this something your Heal from Home helps to remedy specifically?
I'll certainly be looking into your course, and any advice or tips you can offer in the meantime would be much appreciated.
Please write to: ktvahelp@gmail.com with your question.
I had pain after the second part, so i stopped. I guess ill just keep trying everyday and stop when i get pain? im getting the supplements now too.
Hey Ken, do you have any inclination to do some reaction or sing some Huey Lewis?
I love me some Huey Lewis!
Is there anything I can do for vocal cord spasms?
Will this help after a vocal chords nodule aswell ?
Hey Ken. I just discovered your channel. I have a horrible voice. Before I put 100% into following your lessons I need to know…can anyone with a bad singing voice learn to sing? Just looking to do campfire songs. Thanks man
You can do it! You WILL improve. You will ROCK the campfires!
Can you do vocal rehab if you still have the vocal nodule?

What would you suggest for muscle tension dysphonia?
This would require some private instruction, likely followed up with my Voice Repair program. kentamplinvocalacademy.com/
Hi Ken! I hurt my voice when i was trying to sing with rasp, and i dont know is it odd or not, it's sounds like before, but hurts all the time when i use it. Do you think these excercises could help me to?
Your voice should not hurt, but singing with rasp improperly could be the cause. It is entirely possible that these exercises could be helpful to you. Make sure that you use your voice gently. Singing with too much force can be damaging.
@@kentamplin All right, i will give it a try. Thank you so much!😀
What's your views on meditation? I've noticed my voice sounds better after a meditation session
Meditation has a lot of slow deep breaths; there’s a good chance that when you sing after meditation, you’re using better breath control which results in your voice sounding better
I have my left hand side voice chord paralyzed due to vagous nerve damaged how can I get help by exercise
My voice is breathy and weak. I have very little bass in my voice. Been to ENTS,no one knows. I I want bass back in my voice and stop being breathy. What should I do? Had a bioplasti done, worked but didn't last. Voice went back to being breathy. It seems there is no moisture in the vocal chords. It's hard to get any sound out
I blew my voice badly even the end of this hurt.
I have an implant and there are leads that go to my Vegas nerve at the base of my brain, however, to get there it goes up my neck and rubs my vocal cords. The implant goes off about every 30 seconds to keep me from having seizures, I still have them anyway, just not the ones that could kill me, which is why the implant. But ever since the implant I have no range pretty much or my voice cracks. On days they adjust the implant I lose my voice for 30 minutes to a couple hours. If I sing for very long my voice disappears too. As a result I run the sound board at church instead of singing.
Thank goodness they were able to do the implant to protect your life, Trisha. God bless you!
Besides collagen what else is out there for vegetarians semi Vegans to moist our vocals please. Help.
