Merle Haggard was an inmate at San Quentin prison during one of the times that Johnny performed there. That was before Merle started his music career.

Seems I had to fight my whole life through. Some gal would giggle and I'd get red. Some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head. I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named Sue." After that comes the verse about him roaming from town to town to hide his shame and watching to kill the man that gave him that name lol :). idk why but it's funnier to me as a complete song, not a chopped one like this :)
