This is old school country. A lot of older country songs have this style, where the story is told in more of a talking formatthann just singing.

There is a a better version where Johnny sings it to prisoners at San Quentin. It was his first version. In fact he had to read parts of it because he said he had several versions that he rewrote. The prisoners loved it.

A good "dad" song is by Brad Paisley and titled "He Didn't Have To Be". He has some great songs that have a lot of humor in them too. "I'm Gonna Miss Her", "Celebrity", "Ticks" and many more but I recommend watching the official videos because they're very funny. Johnny Cash has a song called "I've Been Everywhere" that I feel you would like based upon your reaction to this one.

i grew up listening to johnny Cash and he was one of my favorite artists. still listen to him from time to time even though my tastes in music have shifted more towards heavy metal. he has lots of great songs and it would take to long to list them all to you. some are silly "One Piece at a Time" while others like "Hurt" that you already reacted to are far more serious.
but yeah as others have said already its that old school Country story telly style
(side note would love to see you react to some 'Sabaton' as they are one of my go to bands now days)

I'm with you, Mug. He sure was rapping here! That tempo was crazy fast though. Other times he's played this it's quite a bit slower than this. I'm sure someone has mentioned it by now, but he performed a concert in a prison - I wanna say San Quentin but not positive. He does this song and several others. It's killer. Never was a big Johnny Cash fan until the past decade or so. Legend

We call it country. Country doesn't have to be in one little box. It doesn't have to be sad and it doesn't have to be my woman left me and took my dog with her and it doesn't even have to be all singing, it can be talking, but it's still country. Dolly Parton does several songs where she talks the lyrics through part of the song, "I Will Always Love you" for one and "Coat of Many Colors" for another but they are country. Johnny flat ripped everyone's heart out with his version of "Hurt" and that was country. "Boy Named Sue" makes you smile and it's still country. He has two other songs I can think of right off the bat that will make you smile, "One Piece at a Time" and "The One on the Left is On the Right". He also has great story telling songs like "Cisco Clifton's Fillin' Station" and "Here Comes that Rainbow Again" and "Sunday Morning Comin' Down" and they are all COUNTRY.

1:50 the more I see of your actions, the more I really like them, I think what hooked me in the first time was in Elvis Presley reaction but I have watched easily six or seven by now and yeah the most iconic performance of this is when he performed it at either San Quentin or Folsom Prison, I think Folsom Prison, he did multiple concerts in prisons and he actually did a short stint in one himself. But I remember watching him on TV with my dad when I was a kid and later when I became a player and a honky tonk band not really loved his stuff and I like basically everything he's done very many decades. Talk about a rabbit hole.
But anyway, I take exception to the fact that you're saying well you can't describe it like y'all probably want me to but you're describing in terms of cadence and flow and believe me man, that's exactly how I think of it even though I'm 60 years old but I've been around so much music including a lot of rap, and I think that even stuff that is a lot less obvious than this, whether it's Old Country singing where they phrase like way off the beat for storytelling and emotional impact, like George Jones day, and so forth, it is all about Flo and bars and double entendre and switching it up and all the things that we think about today with rap. So I love when you draw those parallels personally. Go for it man, I'm really enjoying your reactions for sure.

Thirty years ago I met a man named Shirley. He was Shirley Guthrie and an imminent professor of theology in Atlanta. He came to visit our church in SC and he told me that being named Shirley made him the man he became. His book, "Christian Doctrine," was foundational in changing my life at 45.

First time I heard this I was a little kid. It was a long car trip with my dad and i rifled through his old tapes. I was about 7. I absolutely loved it. As for music style, it's old school country. I think by today's standards it would be considered alt folk. I'd also suggest checking out El Paso by Marty Robbins, real ooold school.

This is a style known today as “talking blues”. It goes way back before blues and country, back when “folk music” was just music played by folks. A great example is Todd Sneider’s “Talkin’ Seattle Grunge Rock Blues”.

To hear more of Johnny actually singing, try our 'Ring of fire' or 'Walk the line'. This one & 'Hurt' are great for different reasons, however, they do not showcase his voice. LOL He used to end the song with 'I'm gonna name my son Bill or John or anything but Sue'. This time he said 'John Carter' because that was his real sons name by this point.

This was a very different version than the one I'm used to, you should view the original at San Quentin Prison, this version sounded more like the rap you are talking about, this was not the way it was originally intended! It was played too fast and so he had to sing it faster. Please check out the other version! Thank you!
