And here it is finally. Been a long time coming, and I thank you all for your patience. There's a couple important things that I mention at the end of this video but will tell you here. There will likely not be a video on the TTYD remake this year, I won't know how I want to cover it until I've played it, and I have other plans that are a higher priority right now. I will however stream my first playthrough of it, not sure if I'll stream it day 1, but pretty close after it's release. It also won't just be on Sundays, just whenever is most convenient. Keep an eye on my community tab for updates on that.
Also this isn't the end of the Paper Mario Marathon, I still have more beyond Origami King besides the TTYD remake. But while I had said before that I would focus on finishing this marathon with no distractions, and that did include the post Origami King stuff, I have to go back on that as there is a very important video I want to make for the end of this year, and it has a specific deadline. So sorry that it will take awhile to finish this up, but at least Origami King is done. There also won't likely be another video in between this and the end of the year video, unless I get that one done far enough in advance that I can squeeze out a smaller video, but don't count on that.

Oh and since your interested I have to mention that one of the ideas I got is that the Legion of Stationery are getting redesigns to make them fit better with the Origami theme. Namely they are all Origami animals that incorporate their stationary into their designs I got the designs for four of them. Colored Pencils is a Porcupine a crested one to be specific with the pencils being his spikes no case what so ever, Hole Punch is a Hippo with the hole punch being his head, having origami teeth and drawn on eyes. Tape is a Snail with the dispenser being the shell, and Scissors is a Praying Mantis with the Scissor blades replacing his claws I haven't come up with one for Rubber Band yet I know it's something that can stretch really well I'm thinking of either a Sea star or an Orangutan what do you think? Oh and Stapler is a giant origami wolf and he has a personality being Olly's right fold man. I also wanna better tie them into the story and give a little more personality. Oh and Olly is now omnicidal against all non origami life to make him feel much more like a threat.

The archeologist asking an unfrozen ancient how he likes his coffee is a very funny joke on its face, but if a modern archaeologist had the chance to talk to, say, a ancient Roman citizen, questions about food probably would be up there on the list of things to talk about.

Bit of a dark theory, but I feel like Olivia didn't word her wish more carefully because she didn't want to survive. She loved her brother, and felt incredible pain when he died. All throughout the game, she begs and pleads with Olly to stop. She obviously doesn't want him to die. So when he does, Olivia might not have felt like she had a reason to continue living. She failed. That's why, when it came time to make the wish to restore everything, she _did_ word it carefully. She worded it in such a way that she wouldn't have to feel any more pain.

    • @AndreSantos-xv9oh
      @AndreSantos-xv9oh Před 26 dny +8

Cool theory, but even if that was the case, Olivia still could have worded the wish diferently in a manner that everything, including olly, would go back to normal, giving olly a second chance at redemption. Still cool theory tho.

Coming off the first 3 games, you'd expect him to be permament, making his sacrifice a lot more impactful. It also does set a precedence that partners are temporary.

I think that a way to elevate him is if he had stayed with Mario and Olivia until Shangri Spa, with the boulder sequence happening in Bowser’s Castle and there being various points in the story before they get to Shangri Spa where he’d make an impact on their lives before reaching that part. Like he convinces the Tin Can trio to help Mario like he helped them, he invites the three cosplayers at Shogun Studios to join them, he encourages Professor Toad to face his fear of fire, he ends up warming up to Olivia calling him “Bobby”. Little things to heighten the impact that his death would have on the audience.

I'm fine with the ending and Olly's motivation but it has nothing to do with the sanctity of the art of origami. I see Olly's motivation metaphorically. It has to do more with a Parent-Child relationship. Every parent will mark or scar their children in some way while raising them. Children often resent these lifelong marks that parents have left them with. Part of growing up and maturing is the realisation that most of these marks, even if they end up being negative, were put there out of love or with good intentions of the parents just trying to do their best.

I guess off the parent/could thing, I always Olly as the flipside to what Olivia represents to me: little kids and their views on the world
Olivia is bright eyed and awed by nearly every new experience, finds joy and wonder in the world, and doesn't see the bad in most (She still loves Olly despite his actions, and largely just sees Bowser/Jr/Kamek as friends since they aren't antagonistic here)
Olly, by contrast, to me is the toddler throwing a tantrum over something that happened to them. To others, the whole thing may seem insignificant, but to HIM it's everything

25:07, the thing about Bowser being a parent to Junior, this kind of narration is absent in the Japanese Version, meaning that Bowser being a good father is something exclusive to the Western side, or at least, a NoA treehouse translation thing.
I can't read Japanese, but I used the Chinese version's dialogue for references, (traditional Chinese btw), aside from that one controversy about Toad's line of "Toads have Human rights. Toad have freedom rights." being heavily censored and completely erased so the game can be sold in China due to CCT and their control of media.
Ignoring that one controversy, everything else in the game is faithfully 1:1 translation from Japanese to Chinese.
In the Japanese version, during Olivia's last bench interaction moment, when she's worried about putting Mario and everyone in danger by facing her brother, Bowser just walks up to Olivia's face, and told her that, I quote:
"In peril? Who do you think I am? I am Bowser! Even crying babies would go silent upon seeing me! "
(This is the part where Olivia would go on a 3-second silent before replying: "Wow. That really puts it into perspective." in the English version)
And I shit you not, this is Olivia's reply in Japanese version:
"Wow you're right. Bowser's face is so scary. I unconsciously calmed down."
There's no development of Bowser and Junior's father-and-son relationship in the Japanese version, Bowser doesn't even express the same amount of concern the ENG version had during the Volcano chase scene. After watching Kamek and Jr being run over by the macho Goomba, He only said: "Although I worried about them, but now we can only believe that they'll follow up later. The indomitable Koopa Corps won't be defeated that easily."
In the Japanese version, Bowser sees Junior more as a soldier under his command than a son.
I fear that the narration of Bowser's character in the Japanese scriptwriting is still stuck in the "Haha, he's the goofy big bad guy that tried too hard and keeps failing at being evil that it's funny." trope.
Or, the Japanese overall treat the world as the yahoo wahoo, funny going energy, any concern and worry is gone as you flip to the next page of the story; while the English version isn't shy to sip in some very short but mature moment that leaves an impression.
This is all very disappointing for me when I first realized the English version's dialogue is written so much better than the Japanese.

      @sahaprocks7751 Před 27 dny +1

@@sahaprocks7751 a rare case indeed, consider how the IP control over Paper Mario tried to keep characterization as bland and general.
I imagine the NoA translator team did their best in their ability and legal capability to add some more flavor to the game.
Although one can argue the English scripting is an unfaithful translation and a disrespectful act to the original Japanese dialogue writer, but given the context of this series's drastic restriction on creativity, limitation.
I'm glad what the English fanbase ended up receiving. As this is a better outcome in my opinion.
Given the troubling history and the toxicity of the fanbase over how the characterization of PM should be, I can imagine another Twitter outcry had we got a faithful translation of the Japanese script.

So I want to add some additional notes from the original JP script as well as a few personal anecdotes as to Olly's motivations and characterization.
Firstly, though: That whole "Tools are forbidden when making origami" thing just kind of isn't true. I have yet to find a single source actually saying anything supporting it. Internet searches only seem to link to discussion about Olly. Genuinely have no idea how this got so widespread.
In the Japanese version of the script, Olly's hatred toward Toads is played much more personally. He doesn't just hate them solely because Craff T. was a little stupid. He truly considers being written on somewhat... traumatizing? Not quite sure if that's the right word for what I'm talking about, but what it means is that he genuinely can't stand looking at any of the Toads' faces. If you had to go outside but everyone had the face of someone you hate, that'd naturally lead to negative emotions. Which, when coming from an overreacting teenage edgelord, would prompt him to take considerable action. It wouldn't really matter what was written on his body or not, the fact that he was written on scarred him. (Also side note, the fact that the game's character restrictions are literally integral to the villain's motivation is hilarious. This game would be so different if they didn't exist, IntSys was built different for this one.)
As for a personal theory of mine, there's something about Olivia vs. Olly that sticks out to me. Olly mentions sometimes that, when he was folding Olivia, he folded her "perfectly, too perfectly." The natural question that should be asked, then, is "If Olivia was folded perfectly enough that she came out as a force of good, what happened to Olly to make him Like That?" Well, say you're one Craff T, trying to write a readable message on a piece of construction paper. Naturally, you'd need to press down hard to make your writing readable... denting the paper, thereby making it 'imperfect.' I believe that the writing is literally the cause of Olly's own imperfections and insecurities, and he's unconsciously aware of that, leading him to resent it and, by extension, Craff T.
I do genuinely really like Olly and trying to speculate on what the devs were going for with his motivations, but it is admittedly a bit frustrating how many possibilities could work with only a few extra bits of dialogue. This in particular could've added a bit of weight to Craff T. if they built up to it properly. This game really did kinda suffer from somewhat notable budget and time constraint problems after Color Splash bombed and the pandemic, and the finale definitely seemed to suffer for it. If the game just came out later, we might've confirmed the real answers to these questions. Alas, we do not live in that world. Still love Origami King, though, beautiful game with my favorite boss fights out of anything ever.

I don't really know much of anything of origami culture, I'm just going off what I've heard. Though that does make it worse if that's not true as then there's really no reason he should have had that reaction. But that's interesting, if they leaned more into the Japanese version that could have been better, as long as they properly built it up.

I feel that disregarding remakes had sadly become a trend.
Maybe just me, but I feel that people has the idea of a remake as a superior version, that has to outclass every possible aspect the original Game, which I feel is not the case.
A remake is just a take of how these Modern developers would re make and old Game, with the ups and downs we have nowadays.
Resident Evil 4 is a very good example, because it has an obvious Focus on other things their original counterparts just didnt have, leaving other thing the original has aside.
Yet, one of the most famous videos about It is a comparison to the original calling "Soulless", which is Some regard is not that different to people calling TTYD remake as "lazy".
Which honestly, that would be disregarding the Amazing art both Game has just because you liked the OG better.
These remakes just had another priorities, and Imo thats fine, If I want to play a better TTYD or RE4 I could just install Dolphin with a 120 fps patch, widescreen and 2k support.

Then Olly's hating Toad's thing would have a bit more depth, like he hates them so much, he is ready to die just so they wouldn't exist. Like the player could set up a set of enemies to be on one side of the ring for Mario to deal with and another side on the other side for the partners to deal with without the game telling them that they did the puzzle wrong.

So I share the issue with Bobby's death of it being inconsistent, not because I think that's necessarily bad, but because it kind of robbed me of the impact.
When he exploded I just thought he'd come back, Paper Mario doesn't exactly kill many characters as you pointed out and I knew, for a fact, bobombs in this series can explode and survive. Even when I saw his ghost I was waiting for a punchline, that's what the series trained me to expect, characters won't die and bobombs exploding is a free action. It wasn't until hours later it really hit me, he was gone, and by that point I was WAY past all of that, it never really hit me.
Obviously that's not a big problem if this is like your first Paper Mario or something, but there had to be a better way to telegraph this. Like have a bombomb explode earlier and Bobby casually notes that it just died and won't come back or something.

I would strongly recommend checking out the "Origami King Refolded" mod. It fixes a lot of stuff about the battle system by making enemies stronger, reducing Mario's base damage output and adding actual new weapons with custom range. Even if it doesn't add crazy stuff like EXP, it's a big improvement for battle strategy and diversity.
It also replaces some NPCs so they have better designs.

I agree with the opinion that origami kings ending sucks. It doesn’t completely ruin the entire game or anything but it does leave a really sour taste in my mouth and I would say that’s pretty bad. The ending is the last thing people experience in something and if that last thing is bad it can really affect somebody’s perception of the game. I’m not lying when I say that my opinion on origami king went down after the ending and well I do think it’s a good game overall the ending definitely made me dock it points. Origami king having a bad ending is one of the reasons I think color splash is the superior game. Also I’m surprised you didn’t mention how Olivia calls Kamek Kammy at one point and Kamek responds by telling Olivia never to call him that

While watching the premiere of this, I had a thought: what if this game was the fourth entry in the series, after Super Paper Mario? Would the fan base be as divided as it was when this game first came out? Super Paper Mario was pretty divisive when it came out; people have been nicer in retrospect and while I do think people that resentment would’ve passed in due time, Sticker Star and Colour Splash really did Super a favour by making it look good in comparison. Kinda like the Star Wars prequels. When the sequel trilogy came out, people realized that the prequels, despite their flaws, were genuine attempts at storytelling and not just corporate cash grabs. My point is, maybe more classic Paper Mario fans would’ve liked this game more if it came out directly after Super? I’ll never say a single game appeals to the entire world, but I think this game would’ve been a nice follow up to Super, really showing how that game was just a one-off and not the direction the whole series was going in.

The second for not using the equippable accessories is annoying, but can be done. Paper Mario: The Origami King. It surely is a game I suppose. It isn't a bad game by any mean... but it's still really not great. Every steps forward, it feels the need to take a step back.
Yes, there are "badges" and "partners" technically speaking, but they are just the idea of those concepts. Nothing more. Yes, there is a bigger emphasis on the story, but for that villain? With that backstory and that motivation? Really? And yes, the fights are way less pointless than they are in SS or CS, yet they still are treated as a punishment. Yet they can, and will be tedious to deal with instead of being part of the fun
I can't stress enough how ToK looks like it's pretty similar to the older games, but when you look into it, it's way closer to the newest ones.
Like I said, it's not a bad game and I had a lot of fun playing it. The boss battles where really nice and the plethora of mini games where great. But I'm still sad that it's held back by the stubborn idea that Paper Mario can't simply have a normal RPG fighting system and more unique NPC design. If it weren't for those two (pretty big) problems, it would be an amazing game.
I wonder what is next for this series, will it go back to it's roots? Will it try to be even more unique? Will it stay as a hybrid between an RPG and an Action Adventure, or will it just be an RPG? Or even, will it finally completely ditch the RPG elements and focus way more on exploration? This is one of those times where I truly have no idea... and honestly, I just hope to enjoy the next game, no matter how it ends up being.

I think the reason that the partners are not permanent is that they decided to focus the chapters more on the partners than the early games did. Like, imagine chapter five if, instead of Kamek and Bowser jr., you could have Duss T. out. It wouldn't quite work. Even if Kamek and Bowser jr. didn't actually join your party and were more like accompanying NPCs until Bowser jr. is fully restored, the jungle section wouldn't really work if you had a character other than Olivia or an additional character out. The original partner system would have required a different style of story. (I still want the original system back for the next game, though.) That said, I would have loved to see Duss T.'s reaction to learning that Captain T. Ode stole the Spa Marino.

Watching this video really reminded me how much of a return to form this game actually is. I played it before and was very disappointed that they would try to develop this weaker story that strays away from the original trilogy rather than building on top of what they set up. However, I was blind sighted by how much this game does want to tell a story and create a world worth caring about with characters worth caring about. I still think the original trilogy did characters and world building for the Mushroom Kingdom better overall, but the fact that it has this at all makes this more of an actual Paper Mario game again and didn't think too much about that. So, thanks for reminding me. This game is actually decent. I also just love some of the new details that add more life to this world, such as the more interactive nature of the world and the cinematics. These aspects elevate this game's presentation far above any other Paper Mario game and I would love to see this sort of thing applied to an even grander Paper Mario adventure in the future.

This is gonna be a long comment probably- but i wanna give my take on things.
its bitter sweet to see this series come to an end, i know we have ttyd hd coming up, but that feels like more of a end credits scene extra then the end- this is the last proper game so-
before i give my opinions i just wanted to thank you red, you've given me a better view for ALL these games, besides 64 and ttyd, these reviews have been top tier, like some of the best game reviews on this site, your wit, humour, insightfulness, commentary and obscure tidbits have been extremely enjoyable and ill probably rewatch these all for years to come! These videos are very special to me, hell your color splash video couldnt have come at a better time thanks to you explain the entire moral of that game and your own alibies about it, so thank you so so so so so much, i and the rest of your viewers couldnt thank you more.
now for the scary part... OPINIONS!!!! 😱😱
As i said on a comment on your community post, origami king is my most hated, id say its probably comparable to your hatred of sticker star pre-review, now watching this is a wakeup call, that maybe my opinions were blinded by toxicity from other, they were- as you said at the begining the fanbase was at its worst at the reveal of origami king, and my time in this fanbase has not been pleasant at all since, mostly anyway. it kinda made me grow a distain for origami king specifically, since that was these toxic fans fav game, and especially since my sticker star replay, which, as the same as you, kinda made my pure hatred for it go away, and i never cared much about color splash, but recently i have been try to be a better person, and dunking on this game... isnt the kindest thing to do, even if the modern fans started all of this.
not to mention, seeing a reviewer i genuinly respect and (mostly) agree with like it- dude i think i should just remove my hate goggles, so when critiquing this game im gonna try and not act like avgn play dr jeckle and mr hyde, and be respect and jus tpoint out stuff i genuinely don't like.
i do heavily disagree with your opinion on the artstyle, i think its the worst looking game in the series, i think it looks really dull and boring some areas from chapter 2, 3 and 5, and the look the floor has is very repetitive, infact its the look... almost EVERYTHING has, no unuiqe texture or kink, just that flat paper look with the lighter insides of the paper sticking through, even sticker star and color splash, which artstyles i liked, didnt do this, having unique patterns and what not, it all comes off very plain and boring, and im really not a fan.
my main problem of the artstyle is with the characters, i agree fully with you in terms of the white outlines, i dont mind them, but my main issue is the animations and charecter changes from ttyd-super. the animations in ttyd and super had this really nice smooth, fluid look to them, that was taken in sticker star, replaced by a ugly stop motion look, even if they added lik 3 extra frames i wouldnt mind it nearly as much (plus it makes modding a pain) not to mention ttyd hd brings it to its absoloute limit by adding fully new and beautiful reaction animations - but tok just looks lifeless and... not my cup of tea.
also the charecters looked alot better in ttyd and super, koopas, pokeys, boo's especially. but im already going on really long here so ill leave it at that.
the gameplay is the reason i hate this game, the battle system, to be precise, it is insufferable, and couldnt be more annoying, the same boring repetitive puzzle again and again and again gets EXTREMELY tedious for me, its like trying to play half life but when you reload you have to play a round of chess, i dont want to play chess i want to play the actual game- the worst part is that the battle besides the annoying gimmick is pretty okay! but the puzzle RUINS it for me.
anyway- i think thats it, i dont want to go on for TOO long, but i already have so ill end it here, as alwasy red thank you so much for another just amazing video, even if i disagree with you im watching more so to watch a video from a creator who i love, not to see an opinion (altough a nice nontoxic opinion is always fun to listen too), im definately gonna stay watching your videos, cause your videos are just consistantly amazing, pm or not, thank you so much for this journey, ive been watching since before the spm ideal remake video, and its just been a blast, i may add some comments on these videos again in a few years just to give a older me's take on these lol, but yeah, thank you so much man, its been amazing, cant wait for what you have in store next (:

I , like many other people, dont enjoy the main gameplay loop of lining up enemies that much, I feel that it really lacks strategy and didnt see any potential.
Where I saw potential though, were on boss fights. Really, they are more open up to experimentation and deals with the board on uniques ways, and on your part, open ups to much more variety.
I feel that if they elaborated from this point of view, utilizing more options that may open up to more strategy, and maybe on the turns it would had been more like an standart PM battle system, it genuerly could had been an tremendous combat imo.

There's no "rule" against using tools when making origami. You are not supposed to write on them, but that's more a "well, now it's not as pretty as it could be" thing rather than some huge taboo because in traditional east-asian art negative space is highly valued. Think of it like someone using felt pens to color an artwork instead of "proper" oil colors or aquarells.

Its even worse if you think whether these beings have thier own sentience. Or if they are more so just given basic orders. They also appear to be used as living prison cells for random civilians. Which is also incredibly messed up.

I've been following your Paper Mario videos since the very first one and I was so curious to hear about your take on this game. I am on the side of the older games being the best. You pretty much has the same experience as I did with this game. Not what I wanted, but it is indeed a very good step back into the root of the series. I wouldn't call it the best Paper Mario experience, but I certainly enjoyed mine.
The battle system could have been so much more interesting if they mix things up a bit just like the Boo being invisible during the puzzle solving. That was probably the thing that made me wish that there were more special enemies like this. Boss's fights were also a blast, switching the concept of the battle system.
It is so close to being a very good Paper Mario game, the only thing holding it back is the lack of diversity in the battle system because once you get the hang of it, you pretty much have seen what the game has to offer. The only thing keeping you up is the story that is finally somewhat good and the character's interactions.

I actually had a thought as to how they could’ve handled Olly better.
The reason he was doing what he did was because he didn’t want to feel rejected by society. It seems like Olly was the first Origami creation by Craff T. that was brought to life, and because of that, Olly had felt isolated from the rest of the paper community. They respected him, but he never felt like he himself belonged; this could be expanded upon by showing how Craff T. sees Olly as a sort of son, despite already having a family of his own. In an act to feel less lonely, Olly wanted to create more Origami people, so he created Olivia as a sort of experiment. It worked, and he did feel a little less lonely, but then he got an idea: what if he made Origami out of some of the residents? Maybe one of the Toads he’d met volunteered for this experiment, and when he came out of it, the Toad felt a little weird, but still felt like himself (in this context, Origami people don’t lose their mindsets, that’s caused by something else). This high at the experiment being a success caused Olly to go a little too far, turning almost everyone into Origami just so he wouldn’t be alone… including his own creator.
When you first meet Peach, yes, she is Origami, but she’s still herself… mostly. She’s learned that being Origami isn’t so bad at all, and is willing to accept Origami people into her kingdom. The problem? Olly is still here, and has converted the castle into his base of operations. He’s perfected a special fold that can alter the brain, but Peach somehow managed to resist that power and revert the fold, so Olly just keeps her locked up. As the game progresses, Peach wonders just what she can do as Origami and tries experimenting with her new body, trying to find out Olly’s motivations (think the peach sections from 64 and TTYD). However, not only does she learn Olly’s motivations, she also practices how to fold herself, eventually being able to transform completely.
And then, when Olly is defeated, he realized just how much damaged he caused to the world. He finally snaps out of it, regret pounding on him like a hammer. When Mario gets Peach off the wall and refolds her back to her Origami self, Peach also recognizes that Olly wasn’t trying to be evil, he just got out of control. Olly finally accepts that he wasn’t supposed to come to life and offers to be folded into the last paper crane so the others can undo his damage. But Peach doesn’t accept that. She turns herself into the last paper crane (remember, she’s been practicing shapeshifting during her time in the castle) and makes her own wish.
“I wish that paper people and Origami people can coexist peacefully, and that all the damage done by King Olly is undone.”
When the paper cranes fly off as the wish is granted, as each one flies, an Origami person suddenly snaps back to reality, with Peach being the one to restore her castle back to the way it was before. Peach lands in front of Mario before unfolding herself, and sees Olly and Olivia, alive and happy together. Olly thanks Peach for what she did, before he and Olivia fly off to start a kingdom of their own: the Origami Kingdom.
Sure, this ending takes away the sacrifice Olivia made at the end of the real game, but I genuinely think this could’ve worked if they had gone in this direction.

I think that another thing that could've greatly improved the game would have just been more weapon variety, and more enemies that react to different weapons. It's very underutilized, but Ninjis do actually counter hammer attacks, and sometimes the correct lineups for them end up being a 2x2 formation, basically the one and only instance where the Tail attacks have any meaningful value.
More weapons with unique attack ranges could also add a lot to battles. Like maybe Quake Hammer could affect all grounded enemies on the two innermost rings, or having fire/ice flowers be able to freely target 4 enemies rather than being locked to a line, or a Tornado Jump that has an effect of a 3x3 area. More weapon diversity would add way more strategic descisions to battles, but they would put emphasis on the phase of battles that clearly aren't the focus as of now. However simply having more diversity in weapon AOE would affect how you go about solving the puzzles. Rather than constantly being on the lookout for a 1x4 or 2x2, you could think about the current enemy types at play on the board, what weapons would be best for those enemies, and then aligning them in a specific way that lets you hit them with as many of those weapons as possible.
This would other rammifications of course, such as making the weapon durability a much bigger annoyance, since by expanding the weapon variety, it makes it a lot less likely for you to carry several duplicates of the same weapon types, and when your weapons break it would sting harder due to not having a backup, which in turn could make some players less willing to use their weapons. A way to solve that could be to re-introduce some sort of FP system, or to remove restrictions on weapons altogether and just give them all infinite uses. If they're all equally balanced and just situationally more useful than others, it can still be engaging enough.
You could just remove the shiny/flashy/legendary teirs to the normal weapons, cause having 4 variants for all avalible weapons would be a lot to manage. You could just ramp up Mario's existing attack stat that scales with his Max HP, it currently exists, but it's just very subtle, it only goes up by 1 for every 20 Max HP increase, so it's barely noticable.
I could ramble on for longer about how I'd like to see the Origami King combat system developed and improved, but I'll cut off myself before I write a 10 page essay.

I like origami king and it has a lot of stuff going for it, but just like all of the other modern paper Mario games it has so much unnecessary shit that drags it down. The game would’ve been so much better without the battle system. I do like the boss battles though. I know this is probably a hot take but I prefer color splash to origami king. Origami king feels like it’s trying to be like the original two games but failing at it. Well color splash is just trying to do its own thing and having fun with it (the battle system in color splash also sucks tho). Origami Kings ending also sucks

This was an awesome and very informative review! I was expecting you to hammer down on this game for all of its flaws while praising it for everything it does right, but it looks like it was actually quite a bit better than some of us were thinking. No wonder there was a huge debate over this game and TTYD. Fans of this game, while not being entirely in the right, at least had a point. Granted, so do us TTYD fans, but I digress.
When this game was first announced, I was definitely torn on it. On the one hand, I was glad that they were at least listening to us fans by bringing back some of the things that we'd been demanding for years, even if they didn't quite match what we had before. However, it did still look like a sequel to Sticker Star and Color Splash in its presentation, and I, as many others, was not okay with that direction. But, being on the fence as I was, I figured I would at least give it a chance based on one essential, key concept (something I was surprised you didn't talk about much if at all, but I guess it either wasn't that important to you or you were willing to forgive it): experience. I knew that Sticker Star didn't have experience having played it myself, which even then sucked because it removes any incentive to battle at all. I also knew that Color Splash technically had experience, but from what I heard it was pointless and didn't really do its job. In games like this, if anything besides the story, character development, world-building, etc. is important, especially gameplay-wise, it's experience, because that's core to this kind of battle mechanic. Upon hearing that there was no experience in this game, I decided to skip it. Considering I got Bug Fables around that time instead, anyway, I decided to leave it at that. Kinda interesting that each of these three games gave me some different kind of experience: I had to download Sticker Star because it wasn't available in the store, which should've been a red flag already, I didn't have a Wii U so Color Splash was out of the question, and I chose not to play Origami King. That being said, I did at least watch ZackScottGames play it instead, so, while I didn't play it myself, I do at least feel I have some fair contributions to add.
For one thing, the story is obviously better than the previous two games. Granted, I don't think it holds a candle to the first three, but for what it does it at least is doing something. I agree with you on pretty much every aspect you covered. In fact, you even said some of my thoughts exactly, so I was pretty pleased with where you went in this review! Awesome job! I especially love those names you came up with for the different partners/NPCs you come across (especially the Toads) who deserve names but weren't really given any. It actually helped me to better remember what characters you were talking about as you went along. Goes to show that even a name goes a long way with connecting to them. Can't believe they keep going two steps forward and one step backwards on these. Anyway, the way these stories overall communicate to me is pretty ironic. I was expecting to see one of your partners (probably Goombario) die at the end of the first Paper Mario game. Never happened (probably a good thing, though). Death becomes almost a bit more of a theme in TTYD but they backtrack from it during the epilogue (probably to make it more kid-friendly, though the game's theming wasn't to begin with. The remake is a golden opportunity to fix that, but I doubt it. Either way, it'll be faithful or more appreciative). Super began the trend of at least losing your most important companion (though Timpani and Blumiere are still suggested not to have really died, so again it backtracks). Then, in the last three it moves closer to your main companion actually dying: Kersti dies, but then Mario wishes her back; Huey sacrifices himself and the characters assume he's dead, but he's shown to have survived to the player. And in Origami King, both Bobby and Olivia actually, legitimately die and never come back. Bobby is, in Olivia's eyes, resurrected through another Bob-omb, sure, and Olivia can in spirit come back as a trophy of sorts. So, it goes to show that my expectations were suspended throughout the whole series. I didn't realize until writing this just now that there's actually a theme in that trend, smoothly transitioning from no deaths to two actual ones at the end. Maybe there is hope for the TTYD remake, or any subsequent game after it. (Bug Fables is a different topic, but maybe Leif's backstory counts, as well as the Eternal King at the end? Who knows.)
As a music connoisseur, this game's soundtrack is really good. It's interesting that they even brought back the same composer from TTYD for this one. Nice attention to history and detail! And a lot of the picks you presented are ones that made my list! There are a handful of others that didn't, but it doesn't matter a whole lot. I can see you have a good taste in music! I do love how creative this game gets when it handles music, though it does lead to a couple problems that I also have with the previous two games' soundtracks that seem to get worse as time goes on: the soundtrack is awfully long. I listen to entire video game soundtracks while working, and if I leave these three games' tracks off, it feels like something's missing. And yet, Color Splash and Origami King take a long time to listen to. In fact, I have the individual songs instead of the whole video soundtrack for two reasons: one, I can set the order however I want (the people who make them don't tend to list them in order of appearance in the game, for some reason), and two, I can omit the ones I don't like or are redundant (like the "thinking" ones. I still have all the different variants of Toad Town and the battle themes since they're different enough to warrant listening to them as they are, but the "thinking" tracks for the battles just aren't that interesting). The thing I like so much about the earlier games' soundtracks is, not only are they more iconic, they also aren't as long, and each track is memorable enough to where you know exactly when it plays. In these games, you can tell with some of them, but most of them are too atmospheric or generic and they run together. The titles can help, but not when you can't actually see them while you're too busy to check. So, yeah, not my favorite soundtrack, but a good one overall.
While I didn't get to actually play this game, I think I would've enjoyed it if I had given it a fair chance. The new battle system is ridiculous in my opinion, but it could've been interesting if they played around with it a little more (and, especially, added experience back, I mean, come on!). And I do like the idea of filling in holes around the world using confetti, though it does seem a bit out of place in a game like this, especially since it seems more like a completionist afterthought rather than something that actually adds to the game. Could've been interesting in a different game on its own where it's the core mechanic. But maybe it's a sign that we'll be seeing much better days ahead? Who knows. Here's to the TTYD remake, though! Hopefully that game turns things around and we'll start to see a surge of OG Paper Mario fans in the next generation. In the meantime, looking forward to playing it. And also your next review!
