    "Weekend project" had me cackling. Home Assistant has been my "weekend project" for over two years, and will likely never end. There is an endless amount of things to tinker with.

      Yeah...when I first thought about doing this I felt like there wasn't much I could really automate 😅. Now that I have got it setup I pretty much see opportunity for automation everywhere I look. So maybe I'll start calling it my weekends project instead haha

      5 years in and still learning loads everyday. Its insane really. But I love it! Even the wife is impressed at times! :P

    It’s a presence sensor very different than a pir sensor presence sensors detect you no matter what even down to you breathing pir sensor detect bigger movements so if you sit still it will clear and not detect until you move again presence sensors are better if you ask, me set up a automation to turn on lights when your in the room and turn off the lights when you leave the room or a specific amount of time after you leave a room if you switch to a pir aka motion Detecton sensor it will turn on lights when motion is detected but you will have to figure out how to get 3hr lights to turn off when you leave the room unless you don't mind turning off lights manually when you move, because if you have it set to turn off when no movement is detected then if your not making big enough movements the lights will turn off for a example you sitting there watching a video with minimal movement presence sensors are the way to go

    Welcome to the future. I started the journey about 6 years ago, and by far my favorite automation is turning the lights off/on when plex starts/ends a movie.

    the best part about home assistant is the ability to use a wide variety of products there's no need to stick to a certain ecosystem

      Yeah haha I'm starting to realize that as I look for the next pieces I want to get. Lots of different brands to try now!

      @@samsalasky and you may want to get a second dongle to run zigbee to mqtt It supports A wider variety of devices Then zha And also almost always has more settings To adjust the device It is possible to run both as I do in my instance

      @@jordaynerjr just when I thought zigbee was the easiest to use with HA (after seeing this video), you throw out all these other weird acronyms with more/better options 🙄

    You are almost lucky the USB didn't fit as ZigBee is so low power is strongly recommended to always connect the dongle with an extension to get it away from the electronics of the device you are connecting it to or any wifi device to avoid radio interference.

    I’ve been looking for exactly this type of video. Most home assistant videos go from 0 to 100 miles an hour in one second it was good to see a basic unboxing and set up of the basic home assistant unit.

    I’m on a similar journey. My biggest annoyance with HA is all the updates. Some go well. Others have resulted in my HA green crashing a half dozen times a day or forgetting devices.
    I’m simultaneously testing Homey Pro and have Hubitat to test out as well. I was surprised to find out how much more HA does in the setup for the user than the $400 Homey Pro. I don’t think there’s a really easy all in one option available yet.

    I bought a home assistant green about a month or two ago trying to switch from Google home. Which I unfortunately invested way too much money in. I played with it for like a day and then gave up because it was too technically complicated for me. But it looks like I'll have to switch to zigbee items cuz it looked pretty easy to set up as opposed to having to mess with yaml code and finding the right integrations for different Google, Alexa, and other third party devices

    • @uSlackr
      @uSlackr Před 4 měsíci

      I'm sure there is a way to migrate devices from Google. What protocol are they using? Wifi? Don't re-buy stuff yet.

    • @roachmonk
      @roachmonk Před 4 měsíci

      @@uSlackr yes everything I have is Wi-Fi. About to move from this tiny studio though into a much larger townhome with my wife. Most of my Google products I didn't even install yet (doorbell, Yale lock, nest mini, nest hub, etc) cuz not enough room/plugs lol. I mostly control my tiny place with the LinknLink ehub which is a motion, temp, humidity, sensor and IR/RF controller. I actually just got an email from them a day or two ago saying HA now has a "HACS" that will help integrate it. I'll have to try that out at my new place in a week or two.
      Hopefully setting up my HA Green here didn't mess it up with me trying to set it up in the new home in the future

    It's a motion detector or a presence detector? The presence detector detects you always in the room.

    • @samsalasky
      @samsalasky  Před 6 měsíci +2

      It does both. The first automation I wrote was with the motion detector. I left the room for 10 minutes and the sensor never switched to "clear". I have been checking it randomly over the last couple of days and it always reads "detected". The motion sensor has gotten a bit better but still not 100% accurate

    • @gguybr
      @gguybr Před 6 měsíci

      @samsalasky you mean motion or presence? You repeated the word motion twice and as far as I've heard of the presence sensor detects through walls so you should limit the distance you want to inspect.
