- We take a Grand Union cruise through Royal Leamington Spa before the lockdown comes into effect. Everything is going well until weed hatch hell halts the boat. We pull used underpants, rags, plastic and an old face mask out of the hatch!
With the prop clear, we travel from Royal Leamington Spa to Radford Semele, taking in some of the history of the area, including the Leamington Prior Gas Works, Rangemaster Cooker Factory, Flavel's Eagle Foundry, and Thornley's Radford Hall Brewery.

Seems that the reality of what happened was entirely surreal - although, Colin, for 2 reasons I would never have worn that head!

You might want to consider getting some pond gloves (they are long and go right up past your elbow) for delving in the weed hatch, you never know what you going to put your hands on! Stay safe guys and keep up the great vids.

I,m sure you,ve been told this before, but the difference between your vlogs and others of the same Ilk, is that you give people a good description of where you are and whats in the area, and interesting history trivia. A lot of other canal boat people never do this. We see locks, water points, and thats it.

Braver man than me, my step daughter is a scenes of crimes operative and has actually done that for real, having drained a canal in the midlands for parts of a torso, the head was in the sluice gate..With that factual interlude, keep up the good work, need a laugh every week..

It’s really bizarre but I’d forgotten that I’d lived bang next to the canal when I lodged at Clapham square next to Clapham terrace bridge on your film. I loved living there - working in the posh end and living in the less posh end 😀. I loved the parks which were great to walk round in all seasons. As a bingley lad I went all the way there to work for Bradford and bingley building society. I never seem to escape canals. - may new place of work is on the tiny navigavable canal in Thornaby - I just love them so I’m really loving this. Thanks guys.

Oh, if you have to go down the weed hatch and its arm numbingly freezing pour some boiling water down it first. It warms the water enough to make it bearable however it shouldn't be too hot to put your hand in, although always use caution. The warm water stays in the weed hatch.

WobblyBoater. Just another point about weed hatch use. Don’t just turn the engine off, remove the key completely so there is no chance of it being started with your arm in there. Also very useful is a sharp knife with a hole in the handle to you can tie it to your wrist and not loose it.

I've managed to calm my earworms down over the last few years - not sure how! I would say I've actually suffered with them over the years - I remember having one earworm that I think lasted me something like 10 years when I was a kid - a stupid demo tune from a cheap casio keyboard - it never left me alone!

Ok, you guys threw me a curve here. Weed Hatch? You can pull weeds from inside the boat? I remember seeing a video of you jumping outside the boat to clear the weeds. I had to do research on weed hatch. I never knew that it exist. Normally you guys are very details about everything ( which I enjoyed very much ) and so I was very surprised that there was no detail about it. Hmm but then I am still new at your channel and have not watch all of the old one yet. I love your drone footages and view from the water level as well as different POV. There was one in this video that only last 1-2 secs that had me playing it a couple of times to figure out what it was. I am assuming it was a water reflecting up under the bridge. That was a great shot. Could use a 5 secs shot there for it was relaxing. Keep up the great work you guys!
Shawn Blood. The weed hatch is a hatch above the propeller that can be removed to remove weeds, fishing tackle or plastic bags from the prop. It is essential to replace this hatch before starting the engine or you will sink the boat. Sometimes the boat hook is also used to remove rubbish from around the prop. If you are lucky you can remove the rubbish with a blip of reverse.

Shawn Blood. Normally the weed hatch consists of a box above the prop with a removable cover 6”-8” above the water line to prevent flooding. This will have a plate below it at or slightly below it, ideally at about 10% of the prop diameter above the prop to prevent prop cavitation.

September 2019 we stayed in a caravan site near to where you stayed just outside Leamington Spa and we cycled to the top of Hatton Locks and back to the site along the tow path, leaving it just past the bridge that crosses the canal with the B4455 going over it. Lovely area
