This video contains my list of the 10 best dog breeds for protecting a homestead. This includes a correction from my original posting of the video.
If you've watched the first post skip ahead to 15:30 to hear what I have to say about the #1 Homestead Protection dog.
Top 10 dog breeds for Homesteaders
You’ve outfitted your homestead with a garden, stockpiles of food, fortified windows, and the ultimate backyard BBQ area. Your kingdom is almost complete! There is only one thing missing: your four-legged friend!
A house isn’t a home without companionship, especially when you have kids around. When it comes to selecting a pup that is going to be with your family for 10+ years, consider carefully. Just like there isn’t one style of homesteading, there isn’t a one-dog-fits all for homesteaders. Make a checklist of what it is you’re looking for in a furry friend and stick to it. I'M A BIG FAN OF DJI DRONES AND CAMERAS, GREAT FOR GETTING AMAZING PHOTOS AND VIDEOS OF YOUR DOGS.

There are far better homestead guard dogs that were built and breed for this specific purpose, this list was pretty poor. Don’t just believe someone on CZcams. Bulldog was by far the worst.
My top 10 and a few of their uses:
      1. Anatolian Shepherd
      Livestock GD, Personal Protection
      743 PSI Bite Force
      2. Dogo Argentino
      Hunting, Personal Protection
      500 PSI Bite Force
      3. Belgian Malinois
      Personal Protection, Herding
      195 PSI Bite Force
      4. Tibetan Mastiff
Livestock GD, Personal Protection, Cart Pulling
      550 PSI Bite Force
      5. Caucasian Shepherd
      Livestock GD, Personal Protection
      UNK PSI Bite Force
      6. Rottweiler
Personal Protection, Herding, Hunting, Cart Pulling
      328 PSI Bite Force
      7. Rhodesian Ridgeback
      Hunting, Personal Protection
      224 PSI Bite Force
      8. German Shepherd
      Personal Protection, Herding
      238 PSI Bite Force
      9. Komondor
      Livestock GD, Personal Protection
      130 PSI Bite Force
      10. Great Pyrenees
      Livestock GD, Cart Pulling
      500 PSI Bite Force
These working dogs are a lot healthier and better for a homestead life especially in a SHTF scenario. All of these working breed dogs can contribute way more individually than half of the breeds listed in this video and they have a high prey drive/high energy K-9’s. All of these are multi purpose/multi asset dogs; whether that be cart pulling, livestock guard dog, hunting, herding, personal Protection, or much more…

It's great to see the Boerboel in what many people feel (me too) is it's rightful place on this list. Glad you decided to do an update to the list. I have been a Doberman guy my entire life and they are still my favorite breed but if I still had the energy I think the Boerboel would be the next breed I would own and work with. If people do some real research and check out some of the dogs from the country of origin (South Africa), they would be amazed at just how phenomenal these dogs truly are. I think in the US and perhaps some other parts of the world the image of the Boerboel has been the one of a big Bullmastiff, like in this video. The truth is that these dogs have very different looks and in South Africa it usually is determined on where the dogs are from and what type of work they may have some specialization in. Great job as usual.

Agree with your top pick; I'd point out that Ridgebacks, descended from largely the same stock as Boerboels, might belong on this list as well. They're fearless in the face of threats. Most mastin breeds come from the tibetan mastin and are actually very similar one to the other (anatolian is very similar to kangal, which is very similar to caucasian and central asia mastin, and those are sometimes mistaken for tibetan mastin)
Same applies for shepherd (german, dutch, belgian malinois, collie, border collie, australian shepherd , etc).
Same with dogos and prey dogs like presa canario, great dane, dogo argentino, cane corso, etc (cane corso is actually in between a prey dogo and a mastiff breed).
Be guided by generalities and then go for speciphics on the breed and then for the speciphic traits of each individual dog.

Awesome selection of dog breeds for this video! Hats off to you! From my research and actual observation of several dog breeds, I suggest that if you are living in an area where large carnivores have recently entered, such as California, where cougars and wolves have made inroads, do consider having any of the livestock guardian dog (LGD) breeds as protection. LGDs are passively aggressive, will not actively engage in a combat, but will deter a carnivore from becoming a threat. However, if you are living in a homestead where bad people are a problem, do consider one of the non-LGD breeds well covered here. I apologize if this post causes any inconvenience. Please let me know and I will delete it.

I used to have a Akita. From the first time the dog saw he, he bonded with me and me only. No one else could touch him, not even my husband.. Even as a 10 year old puppy, he wouldn't let anybody touch him. He would grow. No one could come to close to me without him growling and or bitting. It was not good. He attacked my husband three times. When I had him neutered, the vet tech couldn't get him out of the cage. I had to go back there and get him out. He was all tails wags when he saw me. We have a house on 1 acre, fully fenced. At the end of our lot, my Akita would viciously bark at the kids waiting for the school bus. It was just a matter of time before he attacked a person and I would held liable. So I had to do what I had to do. It was really sad. But I still like the breed. That my dog was just "One of those dogs"

I've seen a lot of comments about people wanting boerboels(on other videos too). I'm not against you getting a Boerboel but you must know what you're doing, these dogs are not for first time owners and if not raised right you're gonna have a big problem on your hands. They need A LOT of socialization and they are very dominant and territorial so they don't do good with dogs they were not raised with and other dominant breeds. They are naturally protective, so even if they are socialized you must watch them around people they don't know

Having just lost my dog I’m preparing for my future after I get a homestead or travel nomadic for a while, though this will be without my Chloe. I’ve always favored breeds bred to protect and I have an appreciation for the Cane Corso and the Dogo Argentino, as the area I plan to relocate to does have a boar problem. I loved the Fila but with my limited time experience I know I can’t handle one. But the breeds I’m considering are the American Bulldog, Cane Corso, Dogo Argentino, the Kangal and the Boerboel. I just don’t know who I want to select, maybe some of each as they’ll all have plenty of room and stimulation and for the Kangal they’ll be occupied.

Hey Deke, try this, it's easier ...(bra•sill•YAIR•roe) / (bra•sill•yeh'•roh) / (bra•sill•yeah'•rho)... one less syllable and it sounds very close to the Spanish way. Though I have spell the pronunciation different ways as I don't know what system you are used to but I've tried to write them in the ways of common and familiar words. Each of the spellings and marks of these pronunciations sound exactly the same, with bra as a minor accented syllable and sill barely there at all, yeah has the strongest pronunciation and roe is almost as inconsequential as sill and definitely less so than bra, so that it might be spelled " feel-a-bra-ssəl-yerroh"

Can you imagine if somebody did a really good comparison documentary where these breeds were put to the test in head to head competition ? That would probably get millions of views for a long time to come. Pulling tests, biting tests, willingness to engage both human and animal intruders, willingness to co-exist with people and livestock, survival in the widest range of climates and conditions, grooming and cleaning requirements, loud or quiet, speed, efficiency as an expense , overall health profile, intelligence, trainability and hunting and retrieving specialties could be some categories. There is no one dog breed that would finish first in all those categories of course but it would give an indication of good choices for somebody's specific requirements.

  • @kayceegreer4418

From the research I have done, many people with large property and flocks to guard will have a more velcro Livestock Guardian breed for up close and they will have Anatolians or Kangals for the outer range of the flock; they will go seek out high places and watch, and range the outer reaches of your flock and your property. They were range more in the daytime and this action will keep animals away, your ranging Guardians following scents wherever they may go and taking care of business if they come upon something that needs taken care of.
It is very strategic to do this, because wolves can be very tricky - they will send a female in heat to guide your dog away and if the Anatolian or Kangal goes after it, whether a female chasing it off or a male looking to mate, there needs to be other dogs, yes plural, in close, that stay with the herd/flock to protect it from the wolves that will come in force as a pack as soon as that Anatolian or Kangal is gone.
Now, as to the Pyrenees, they seem to be able to work out the twist themselves to work certain areas and if you have enough dogs of this breed on your property they will pair up and patrol during the day, ranging about to keep the critters away. And in case you did not know this about the Pyrenees they are like the Tibetan Mastiff, they are nocturnal. Yes, that means they are awake at night and may like to sound off to let you know, just like the old town criers once did... "It's 9, (10, and 11, and 12...) o'clock, and alll isss we-elll !"

I just started the video, and fully expected the Great Pyrenees to be in the top 3. The quintessential livestock guardians, suited to all kinds of weather conditions, have some natural herding instinct, don't suffer the same wanderlust as things like Huskies, the list goes on. Disappointing that they aren't recognized, I'd be curious to know what his reasoning is.

Neutral on a few on your list. I think this should be separated in two or three categories: Rural Home Guardian Dog, Barnyard (Structures) Guardian Dog, and Livestock Guardian Dog. I like the Cane Corso and Boerboel however they are more of either a Barnyard (Structures) Guardian Dog and Rural Home Guardian Dog, the Boerboel is a velcro type dog. Kangals and Maremmas may be considered second to none, with different types of Livestock, as Livestock Guardian Dogs. I've been associated with German Shepherds and Doberman Pinschers and prefer the Dobe by far... they are great with livestock too.
