Thinking back I’m glad one of the other women I bought with at least had me to tell her to wear a dang shirt under hers and to wear it to comfort, not tight lace. We next to one another in a “1888 london” and “Blackbeard’s pirate ship” themed areas of a haunted house, so we wore them 6+ hours at a time, several nights a week, acting the entire time, for almost two months. There is no way either of us would have kept that up if we hadn’t worn clothing beneath them or been tight lacing.

@@Belltogo3000 the main people who began spreading misinformation about corsets were doctors in the 19th century who were all men (who didn't actually understand how corests change the body so was misinformation, such as saying corsets broke ribs which there was never a recorded case of as well as stating corsets caused things like Tuberculosis) as well as men who ran newspapers who made panic pieces on them (just like the modern panic pieces on how bras cause breast cancer) and men who disliked that most corsets were made by female owned businesses. There were a few women who did spread misinformation about them to begin with but they were mainly women restating the things men had said previously. Thus me saying the misinformation were mainly spread by men who never wore them in this decades.
Also no most women did not tight lace. Women ran businesses, worked on farms, raised children etc. all while wearing corsets basically as support garments, just like we do now with bras. The people who did tight lace were very few (and was primarily in the late Victorian and edwardian era which spans 20 years, which is tiny considering women have been wearing corsets for around 200-300+ years depending on what you consider a corset) and they were all upper class society ladies, who did not represent the rest of the population of women.
You weren't forced to wear them, especially in later decades but it was a societal expectation just like having to wear a bra now (with the exception of women of high society, but again they don't represent all women of the time period). Some women wouldn't wear them, such as female miners, this was considered a little scandalous, but it would also be considered a little scandalous 10 or so years ago if a women when to a business meeting without a bra.
The misinformation about corsets was also furthered by films that showed scenes where a women is bracing herself against something while a maid or her friend "pulls" the corset tight. The first films who did this were again made by men (the first film to do this to my knowledge was gone with the wind which is from the 1940s and directed by a man), and has become a massive film trope now that historical costumers think is ridiculous, firstly because again very few women did tight lace, and it's was in specific eras, so if you've ever seen a regency drama with this scene it is nonsense because their corsets were not designed to bring in your waist. And secondly because if you've ever worn a corset you'd know this is a hyper uneffective way to tighten the corset, it literally does nothing, again showing the people who made these scenes have never worn a corset.
Not bitter toward men, I'm mainly highlighting the irony of a garment worn primarily by women having misinformation spread about it by men, in time periods where men had all the power. It's irony, and something that is common through history up until relatively recently. Women gain power, men get scared and attack it, look at misinformation spread about female pagans, Suffragettes etc. Doesn't represent modern men, but HISTORICALLY it was hyper common and should be noted in my opinion.

That being said, if I could afford to buy custom, it would be from either RedThreaded or PriorAttire. They use antique patterns for their corsets, so you’re guaranteed a proper piece that is historically accurate - or as accurate as one can get, being manufactured today. They do both use metal eyelets in corsetry from before metal eyelets existed, but it’s also true that metal eyelets are stronger and last longer, so there’s good reason for them using them, apart from the fact that that amount of hand sewing eyelets would increase the price considerably.

Wear. An. Undergarment. Be it a cotton shirt or a vest or whatever. Do. Not. Put. Ur. Breasts. Directly. Into. A. I’m really glad you tried again and made a lot of changes! A couple of little things from an avid corset wearer: the trouble you were having with lacing is normal for first timers. Try keeping a lacing video up while you’re lacing and/or try practising lacing the corset when it isn’t on you so you get an idea of how to move your hands while you can use your eyes to help. Also, please, work your way up to ten hours in a corset. The recommended starting point is two hours. TWO. Your muscles need time to adjust and so do your organs, but you also need time to adjust. Things like bending at the hip and not the wait isn’t how most people move, so it takes practise. Also, if you are planning on becoming a more regular corset wearer, there are exercises you can do that will really help. Bernadette Banner has a video of herself trying out a vintage workout that was designed to be done in a corset, as well as regular stretching, and breathing exercises that work on lung strength and capacity to counteract any difficulties the corset may cause (I’m an asthmatic with lasting lung damage from a series of pretty serious lung infections, so I find these SUPER helpful and an absolute must for long term corset wear). One other thing is adjusting your lacing after about an hour. I lace my corset fairly tightly (I typically wear over but corsets for the boob support), and I find that no mater how hard I try to lace my corset carefully and comfortably, I am WAY more comfortable if I re-lace it after a bit. You body kind of settles into the corset and then if you adjust the lacing it makes the fit even better. Just try to resist the urge to make it much tighter! This is a trick tight-lacers will sometimes use to get the extra bit tighter, but part of the adjustment lacing process for non-tight-lacing should involve adjusting the corset tighter or looser, based on how it felt.

I just want to add a couple of things that either weren’t clear in the video, I forgot to add or I just didn’t know but u lovely lot have taught me !!
1: corsets can help with your posture, but they can also provide support for your boobs and your back. I didn’t even think about the boob thing because I am personally lacking in that department 😭
2: You need to be careful using a corset 100% for posture as extended use over years may cause muscle atrophy in your abdominal muscles as your body relies on the corset to keep you upright, instead of using your core. You can stop this by making sure to do ab workouts !
3: I didn’t mention the history of stays, which are corset like garments that serve as very comfortable undergarments. I ran out of time as the video was already very long but there are loads of amazing videos that look at purely the history of this garment !!
4: I mentioned that the “hourglass figure” was a key thing that made corsets appealing - but corsets don’t always create this shape. I got a bit confused with modern corsets (which give this shape) and all corsets through history.
If I missed anything else please let me know in the replies and I’ll add to this !! Thank u as always for the knowledge 💞

There were workout corsets that were similar to what you wore but they weren't popular because women preferred their existing corsets.
A new corset needs to be broken in like a new pair of shoes.
Corsets with front lacing were worn by women who did not have attendants so that they could lace themselves in. Similar to our dresses having side zips instead of back zips. Let's debate the stupidity of bras still clipping in the back 90% of the time.

They also protected the waist from the weight of very heavy skirts- could you imagine a few kilos hanging off a tight waistband, all day? Hello bruises! Whereas a corset will evenly distribute that weight all across your entire torso.
That’s also why many with big boobs like corsets as well- they do the same for the weight of your boobs. So no more neck and shoulder pain, or permanent divots in your shoulders from the straps!
Honestly, I’m never going back to bras. They’re so painful in comparison with corsets.

Also, whoever said satin (silk or polyester) under a corset was a good idea was... not correct. You want fibres that are breathable and will keep you cool and your core temperature steady.
So linen, cotton or bamboo. Orchard corsets sell very affordable bamboo liners. Victorian women wore cotton chemises (satin nighties are a modern thing), and earlier than that, we wore linen shifts. If all the fibres, linen is the best. It’s the most breathable, it keeps you cool, it keeps you dry, and it even has anti bacterial properties, so it even keeps you cleaner! It’s a super fibre, really. Such a pity we moved away from using it so much.

I have worn corsets and stays before, and the over-bust ones are nicely supportive of large ta-tas... Before bras, corsets gave that support to the women who needed it. I find the corset/stays are MORE comfortable than bras as the hips to the support vs the shoulders (straps) on modern bras. Glad you gave it a fair try!

Hello, by the way most people back then would put their socks and shoes on before putting a corset on because of the limit in movement.

It's really nice and positive to see someone taking in consideration other people's opinions and advices, in order to learn, and be open to try again something that had been a displeasing experience in the past ! :)

I'm so glad you redid this video! Corsets done properly are so damn comfortable... and nothing better than it being a cold day you get a nice warm hug under your jumper. I make my own corsets and the odd one for a friend but I learned how to draft my own patter based on my measurements. A bespoke corset is probably what you'd need if you were to wear a corset over your hips again because it won't try and pull in on bone! Awesome video :D

i made a corset this summer out of some denim and although it isn't perfect (i learned a lot as I went), I really love wearing it on days that i need better posture or just for fun. one thing i really like about it is that wearing tie skirts (as opposed to elastic waistbands) is wayyy more comfortable with a corset since it's already keeping your waist one size and so the skirt doesn't pinch

I love the cotton coutil, but want to try denim. I like over stitching with different patterns like Japanese boro, so that color is a great traditional look with that style.

LOL Yeah. There's a reason why this fashion statement has been around for so very long. It works! Even today we still make medical garments for support when we're injured, or do a lot of lifting, or have a medical condition, etc. that are, essentially corsets. For women and men alike. When done right, they're brilliant!

I'm glad you made this video. I remember stumbling upon your first video and being disappointed with the lack of information. I really love corseting! I've been wearing a corset for about half a year now and I see a huge difference in my figure and it helps me stand straight as well. Beginners should season the corset before wearing it for hours on hours. Also, a little tip is when you wear a corset you want to try not to bend in it because it will mess up the corset, so you should put your pants and shoes on before the corset.

Also good choice with the black boots
