- There was at time Ronaldo Luis Nazario De Lima was considered as the best player on the planet. Before the age of 23, he already scored over 200 goals, won the world cup with Brazil, the Ballon d'or and so on. He played at clubs such as Cruzeiro, PSV Eindhoven, FC Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Corinthians.
Ronaldo was definitely on course to becoming the greatest player in history. However injuries derailed his career until his body(weight issues and injury issues) finally gave up on him.
In 2000 during the first leg of the Copa Italia final against Lazio, Ronaldo would suffer his most famous injury when he reinjured a recently recovered knee (which kept him out for five months) this injury was so bad that his kneecap literally exploded into his thigh.
This is how injuries destroyed Ronaldo's chance of becoming the greatest player of all-time. This is the horrific downfall of Ronaldo.

His brain was so fast and intelligent to process physical movement but his body was not ready for that long term. Just the way his genetics gave him the most beautiful physical movement and explosiveness the world has ever seen, it also gave him the negative side of that gift. For me he is the most phenomenal player that ever lived.
it’s actually quite easy to project his trajectory based on what he was able to achieve from his “peak” and before career ending knee injuries and considering he had more goals by 22 (more than Messi and cr7 at similar age group) while not playing for super teams (prevalent for elite players in this era) and without the rules that protect attacking players as seen today and taking into consideration…his miraculous comeback after those tragic knee injuries and winning the way that he did in 2002 (without the explosive pace, without playing much football due injuries and not match fit by any means and can’t even train and considering he felt pain every time he kicked the ball)… one can easily deduce that he would have had a far greater impact without those inhibiting knee injuries that curtailed his career … also the world
Cup win in 2002 in many ways proved that he truly was a legitimate GOAT candidate if not for injuries and vindicated the coach faith in him in spite of not even being 70 percent fit ..(he lost 5-6 worth of prime years and that equates to lost of opportunities for team accolades, team honors and progress, development and also growth)

i highly agree, if not at least the best striker of all time. people like to argue he never won a champions league, but that was due to him playing for milan, inter milan, barcelona, and madrid during times the teammates weren’t fit to win. Plus, he’s won more world cups then both Messi and Ronaldo combined. that alone tells me he’s the greatest of all time. people can’t argue how many goals he score. due to his injury and disease he was forced to retire; and plus ronaldo and messi weren’t rly strikers. ronaldo was a winger messi was midfield.

Ronaldo wasn’t given the best team until the year his knees popped in 99 with signing of vieri etc in Madrid he had one year that he could’ve won it but Madrid got rid of makalele and hierro which was a huge mistake. Btw in the beginning you mention his accolades before the knee injuries, he was also a two time copa america winner and the confederations cup
although he had a legendary career it makes me sad to think he could have been even more! the undisputed best player in history

Career ending injuries have to be the saddest way to go out of any sport. All that time and dedication just for it to all come crumbling down from something completely outside of your control. Just sad smh. Reminds me of of the movie "Friday Night Lights" sad ending 😔 (amazing movie btw)

In 1996-97 Ronaldo was obliged to play with Brazil and missed decisive la Liga matches with Barcelona that costed them the title. Utterly scandalous and unfair. He was unplayable and Barcelona with him would have won 100%.

In that time best players cost 10-15mil now 100+mil after just 2 decade, it should be 10mil more every decade but its not. 50mil more for every decade, its crazy.
