No Self Guided Meditation

  • This guided meditation practice attempts to create the realization of "no self" through a straightforward pointing out practice. Anatta, Sanskrit anatman, in Buddhism, is the doctrine that there is in humans no permanent, underlying substance that can be called the soul. We take a secular approach in this practice to help reveal that there is no "I" or "me" that hears. Only hearing itself.
This is an advanced guided meditation practice.

I liked it, but maybe a longer one with more silence to listen in between? There was quite a bit of guidance. I wanted some, but not that much. Thank you for all you do here! 🙏🏾

Thank you. Yes, it is indeed advanced. The concept that you talk about in this video is difficult for me to understand but I look forward to more of this.

Yes I'm really enjoying this theme of unmasking "the self".... More of that please 😊

Huge fan of this one. It often feels like meditation practices focus on surface level problems, like anxiety or sleeplessness, using the methods of Buddhist thought, without ever following that thought to its conclusion, like this meditation does. That limits how much good those practices can really do, I think. Buddhism is a practice aimed at liberation through recognition of the illusory nature of the self, after all.

I would very much like more of these videos, but longer. I have been meditating for 4 years now and the shorter videos are no longer very helpful. Not sure why, because when I first started the only way I could meditate was to hum for five minutes. Seems now, I just need more time for my mind to stop babbling. I have a hard time with the no self concept but find it an interesting one. I also like your voice - sounds so clear and everything thing else just fades. So thank you and please carry on.

I don't think this is a very good meditation. First, the leader makes a number of gratuitous assumptions. He wants to know "where the hearing is located"? The simple answer is in the ears. In whose ears? Mine. Now, from there, he leaps gratuitously to the idea that there is no me or I hearing, but this does not follow.
The real issue is that I hear, but I don't hear. I am, but I am not, and so I hear and hear not. The paradox is in the tension between being and non being and how these two mental contructs are conventions. So it is wrong to say I don't hear because as a matter of apeaking that just isnt true. It is also wrong to say I do hear, on the plane of ultimate reality, because upon reflection we see there is no I in the ears or the sounds or even in the ideas of these things. Both are true and both are false, depending in your point of view.
