1:13 - at this point in the BBC commentary booth, they had to share the microphone between Murray Walker and James Hunt. So Walker's scream of shock at seeing Patrese going up in the air must have been quite loud! And Hunt's "Oh dear, oh dear." makes it sound funny! Also, look at the impact of the flying car on Martin Brundle's head in 2:03. Crazy how he escaped massive injuries from that. And in 1999, I would think that the biggest crash of the season would be Ricardo Zonta's crash in Spa 1999. Sure, Schumacher's crash in Silverstone put him out of contention for a few months, but Zonta's crash was faster and more violent, though he walked away from it. And the crash was caused by a bet he had with Jacques Villeneuve about taking Eau Rouge flat - both drivers ended up crashing at the same place!
(hunt and walker didn't have to share a mic but just preferred to pass one back and forth for some reason) - at the time i didn't hear walker because my reaction was the same.
@@mattylamb9194 actually he did seem concerned a little later in the commentary (not in this clip) even though it was clear that patrese was ok by them.
@@Joobral that’s not true, his steering rack detached from the chassis. Then he hit the outside of tambarello which no one knows how he died other than it was a fatal head injury. I don’t care what you think you know your wrong. Coz we don’t know!
The rear of the chassis absorbed most of the energy in the crash, away from the driver, ironically Caffi then broke his jaw in a car accident shortly after the GP and missed four races!
A couple more: Diniz had 2 very ugly crashes. In the first one the car got upside down and gave the impression he was decapitated. The second one was at Spa, similar to the one that broke Schumacher's legs.
His reaction times are insane, he actually went to swerve one car, then half way in, realised the white car was there too, so turned again to swerve that. I wonder who that was?
1:40 Here you see a perfect example of why Eau Rouge was safer with gravel traps besides the track. If that was asphalt, Senna could have gone off the track and keep his foot down only to meet a stationary car which was already compromised after a big crash. But with gravel it's impossible for Senna to come at him at full throttle. Not saying a pro like Senna would have kept his foot down but look at these kids nowadays. They all keep their foot down, on or off the track. You crash in Eau Rouge today and no matter where you end up you are basically on the track and cars will be flying past you on all sides at full throttle. It is quite brutal to say but the people responsible for removing these gravel traps have blood on their hands. And as good liberal tradition has it they are not going to listen to anyone because they know best. Their way or you can just quit and find another sport. Get back the gravel and extend the yellow flag zone until after the first corner at the end of Kemmel straight so drivers can lift off the gas properly without risking being overtaken on the straight by a car that lifted a bit less. Make the entire left wall in Eau Rouge one massive yellow billboard which comes on as soon as there is anything going on in that area. Make a rule that says a yellow flag in the area is always a double yellow. And be brutal against drivers that don't lift enough.
i swear if someone else comments a senna or ratzenberger even with the title and description saying "no fatals included" i'll deactive the commentarys.
Literally was gonna post that comment myself! The crash in which Erik says Senna saved his life by stopping and running to help him. Made even more soul crushing when you watch the post Senna crash at Imola tv footage and you see all the cars return to the pits, except one. Erik Comas went out in his car to the scene to see if there was anything he could do for the man who saved his life.
You have to love James Hunt. One car hits the back of another which sends it flying into the air and the only thing James can think to say is "Oh Dear"!
Two notes: why didn't they feature Fittipaldi's upside down in Monza '93? Far more dangerous than the Schumacher crash in '95... And then: Spa '98 was simply a pile up. No serious damage, no injuries, just a 'bit of a show'.
Certainly some bad crashes, depends on what your criteria is. For 1994 I think you have to say Ratzenberger's was the worst crash, very violent and sadly of course resulted in Roland's death. followed by Karl Wendlinger's at Monaco. Senna's of course also resulted in a fatality but it was a reasonably benign crash in the grand scheme of things and it was only really bad luck that killed him. 1998 at Spa, sure it caused 10s of millions of damage and took a load of cars out but it was all quite low speed and miraculously no one was hurt, I would say Villeneuve's crash at Spa the day before was worse. 1992 I think you could argue Eric Comas at Spa, not as dramatic as Patrese's but it was a hard hit and he was injured. Hakkinen's crash at Adelaide in 1995 I think would be the worst that year or Schumachers own one at Spa (I think) where he stuck the Benneton in the tyres backwards.
At Spain in '94, the race between Imola and Monaco, Andrea Montermini (Rolands replacement at Simtek) had a HUGE off at the final corner and had to be taken to the local hospital. After the impact he was motionless in the car for an uncomfortably long time and the Simtek team mustve been thinking "Please not again...."
Hakkinen's crash in 1995 was definitely the "worst" crash of that season.
