Just consider this:EVH's ''Frankenstein'' and George Lynch's original ''Tigerstripe'' guitars, were pretty much the same thing like this guitar here.Eddie and George bought some parts and build them at home, nowadays big guitarbrands are selling replicas of these guitars for thousands of dollars.

The prices for bolt-on ''boutique guitars'' are just ridiculous *cough* Suhr *cough* or my favorite,Charvel's USA Jake E.Lee sign.model.The original was a plain USA Strat, that the San Dimas custom shop, modded for Jake.Charvel sells it over here in Europe for 3,500 Euros, that's around 3,700 USD!
Funny story,a friend of mine, build a Jake E.Lee replica for one of his students for les then 1/3 of the price and that thing plays and sounds amazing. They actually put a Warmoth neck with ss-frets,Schaller locking tuners and a Hipshot Contour fixed bridge on a second hand ash Strat body, they got online, which the ''real thing'' doesn't have, plus the same high-end pickups (S.Duncan JB and DiMarzio singlecoils) and it's still cheaper!

greekfreak1980 That's a fantastic point! You can tell those where willing to pour their souls into the art of playing guitar even if they had to make it themselves. Their commitment to the craft is where the magic is in those guitars, that cannot be bought. Its sad to think some people feel so bad about their playing that marketing manipulates them into thinking that they can buy some of that persons ability because they bought one of their replicas.

The hardest part is the setup. It's not complicated, but you have to get it JUST right. You could build a guitar and get someone else to set it up, but if you buy one, you have someone else doing that for you. I build my own, and have assembled some too. It's great fun. But the setup can be a pain! Anyway, thanks for the video promoting DIY :)

Hey Max! Found you thru guns+guitars. Great playing and sound. I really appreciate that you demoed both pups and did some clean sounding passages. That neck pup sounds really great with distortion.
On the subject of building vs. buying: Like most players, I bought my first several guitars off the shelf since I had no idea of what goes into building one. But now, after many, many years, I started putting together a guitar kit. It's going really well and I'm having a blast doing it. I've learned how to level and crown the frets which is a skill I've always wanted to learn.
Since we're in the age of the internet, building (assembling) is way easier than before. Help from guys like dan is invaluable.
Looking forward to more of your vids.

Great playing and budget friendly, that gets a sub out of me any day! I wholeheartedly endorse the DIY route, its the same as the old saying "Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime." Id rather have my money go towards better components, rather than profit margins companies have built in. Since I'm in the DIY camp, it made me really happy you thought Dan's "fish" was so tasty!

Im a luthier in Omaha Ne. Personally, building gives you more satisfaction that you created an awesome guitar, and, with companies like guitarfetish, solo, kit world, and warmoth the world is at your fingertips. All it depends on is how much you want to spend on your kit and the quality of the kit. I personally like the kits from solo. The fit is always spot on. Happy building!!!

I totally agree. I built a custom explorer with grape purple base and black crackle finish. Installed 20 dollar zebra pick ups that resemble seymour ds invader pick ups with the bigger magnet pulls. They came with other pick ups I didnt like really. And installed locking machine head tuners. It's a set neck so I set it to scale and glued it in with clamps. Let it sit for 24 hours. Stained the rosewood fret board ebony. Installed chrome knobs that didnt come with the kit.The last upgrade will be a tusq or bone nut. Total cost 250.00. With paint, crackle paint, gloss, locking machine heads, pick ups, and knobs. Sounds amazing.

This is so true, and excellent advice, Max...and I also have learned a lot from Dan's channel...
I have built a few Ibanez JEM copy kits, and they have turned out absolutely beautiful!
Of course I had to learn the ins and outs of painting (with spray cans - I don't have a paint sprayer), and how to wire up a guitar, and set-ups, etc...but I learned ALL that from the internet for FREE; and now I have Ibanez JEMs (in various colours) that are totally custom, with 7 way switching, coil split, phase switch, etc....each one for about $350 total (plus the time spent working on them).
(Upgrade pickups/parts come cheap from China on Ebay.)
This is great for me, not only because I can build a guitar as good as a $3,000 model for about 1/10th of the price, but it is custom made for me, AND I don't have to take my guitars to a tech anymore to do set-ups, wiring mods, or anything (except some types of fret work, which I still haven't mastered yet, and would take to a pro, for now).
There is really no point in paying $3000 or more for a guitar, unless you just enjoy paying thousands of dollars for the sticker on the headstock, so you can show people you paid a ridiculous amount of money for it.
That's kind of an expensive euphoria, but if it works for you, then be my guest.
    :)
But above all, there is no high like the MOST HIGH.
All glory to JESUS CHRIST, King of kings and Lord of lords!

I do enjoy your reviews of inexpensive instruments/equipment that do produce good results...a great thing for those looking to make their mark on the scene without going bankrupt! Have enjoyed Dan's channel as well (in fact, when I started this video I recognized Dan's build right away). I "retired" from the gigging scene 8 years ago, as a day job I took then (and still have) just didn't allow the time to keep up with my playing/practicing. Hello Max , I created several guitars with kits that I modified , it's the best solution to have a custom guitar with personnal configuration , it's not difficult the hardest thing to do is the finish , but there is a lot of tutorial to learn to make a painting, a shade of wood, etc ... it's not expensive solution and it's a lot of fun ,you learn many things about the guitar .thanks for the video ,take care !

I have always wanted to build my own electric guitar preferably a Strat but I too am one of those people who doesn's have a lot of space and tools to make one. However, I am considering getting one of the kits Dan suggested. Thank you for this video!

Yea man I can see the Glen thing.(I'm a big Danzig fan) since watching your videos I've started doing my own mods. Been using Squier strats as my base to build with. A Lot of Dragon fire pickups. This is definitely worth me checking into. Thanks again Max. You are super cool.

Great intro!! I subscribe to Guns and Guitars so that was a cool collaboration. You mentioned Danzig, but I think you really look like a young Ian Astbury who is the lead singer of The Cult. They are also one of my favorite bands!!

love yours and Dan's channel! And you do look and sound like a cross between Danzig and Pete Thorn.

I am one of the old guys on guitar, I started playing at the age of 9 in 1964 and I still play.
Fist of all I like your channel because you are not one of these smug snobs for whom a guitar of less than $2000 can never be good.
I have been following you sometime and when you showed the Ammoon nano looper, I emediately ordered one and it was as you said it is a nice thingy to have when you play solo.and affordable for when you are living of a pension.
Because of your review and it is affordable for me I also tried to get the Ammoon strat but for some reason the online shops cannnot ship to the Netherlands..
This video reminds me of my self built guitars that may only have kost like (40 yeers ago) like $50 on materials It took me over a month to build a single piece, and the first ones weren't that good at all. But I learned alot, built two stratocaster like guitars and a bassguitar shaped as a 50 caliber machinegun for someone in a deathmetal band.
Unless people have loads of time and a well equipped workshop I would not advise building a guitar from scratch like I did.
However this video shows a way that does not need this..
Thanks for making this available and I will checkout this other channel .

I picked up a used warmoth strat with double trossrod neck, a conpound radius fretboard, mohogany chambered body, flamed maple top, 3 bill lawrence rails pups, Schaller locking tuners, fender usa trem and a highend hardcase, everything in prestine condition at GC $200, u can't build a git with those components for that coin. Never overlook the cheap guitar rack. Im set with this one. Great advice Max.

I built a 5150 from a BYOG kit. Loved doing it and it came out amazing looking. But have to be honest I really struggled to balance the Floyd and get the action set right. So I went to a luthier and he did that part and now for about €500 total I gave a 5150 that rates up there with the €1500 EVH Striped models. 😎

Great review. I love Dan’s builds, and you’re an epic player who really knows his shit. I just subscribed.
And no, I wasn’t thinking you look like Glenn Danzig. I was thinking you look more like Michael Ian Black after spending a year at the gym, replacing Bruce McCulloch as “Grivo” in Kids In The Hall: Brain Candy 2.

Awesome Video as usual! I have a $100 ebay guitar kit that I started and never finished. I think I'm feeling inspired to get back into it. I even had my buddy spray paint it with factory mercedes benz black paint so the body looks black hole black. I'll have to show you the results when I get it done :-)

I love both of these channels, and one of Dan's first strat builds inspired me to build and Ibanez Jem style kit. I invested around $300 in it including the kit, and it plays WAY better than the standard Ibanez RG's you could find in a guitar center for around $500.
