      Hey man, loved the video. In fact I loved it so much that I purchased everything to do an exact build as described in your video. I plan on converting an old Squier Strat that I've had since High School into a beautiful sounding and playing guitar. I just don't play enough to justify spending a 1000+ on a nice guitar. I'm going with a satin black wood finish, the cf pickguard and all gold hardware, I'd love to show you how it turns out in the end if you'd be interested. Anyway, I'm quite well versed when it comes to soldering and wiring (I did this as a profession for a period of time), however I'm pretty new when it comes to wiring guitar electronics and understanding the nomenclatures. I was wondering if by any chance you had created a wiring diagram when you wired this guitar up, and if so would you ever consider sharing it. Great video as always, I look forward to the next one.

    What also works when installing the floyd posts, pour hot water in each hole for about 10 seconds. Dump it out, it will swell the wood long enough to tap in the posts. The wood is dried enough that it will dry out in no time.

  • @evilcowboy
    @evilcowboy Před 4 lety +1

    Dude just a tip for you. Never use an impact driver to drive screws into wood, it just makes it easier to crack the wood. I think we have all seen an impact driver push a screw so far into wood that it either cracks the wood or snaps the head of the screw off and that is enough of a reason to not use them.
    The best thing I have found personally is hand drill set at the little screw driver mark on the collar (lowest setting) and just chucking a bit into the Jacob's chuck. The thing will stop screwing on its own and will go no further even if you try to drive it further. You have to jack up the setting to around 18 to screw it up.
    Impact drivers generally max out at well over 100 ft lbs, that is a ton of torque and no guitar in the world has screws put in at 100 ft lbs unless someone messed with it and got heavy handed with a screw driver or impact driver.
    Cool guitar, they dye looks like Rit and honestly I have used Rit dye as well with excellent results. The secret to it is to let it fully dry then sand. The reason you want it to fully dry is because the dye has salt crystals in it and when you go to sand it gives the sunburst effect and also gets rid of the salt. After you do that don't wipe it with solvents (acetone, paint thinner ect) you will want a very diluted alcohol (like around 20% alcohol 80% water). This allows the water to melt any remaining crystals but increases the drying time of the water to around a day. Then lacquer it and boom excellent finish.
    I see a lot of people try the Rit dye out and get mad when it doesn't dye nearly as well as what you expect. the way mentioned about just lets it saturate into the wood and you just keep applying coats until you are satisfied with the depth of the color. I have a strat I did it to (cheap bullet by squire that I built a ash body for) and I was also a little upset, but then I stuck with it and kept applying (black and red sunburst was what I was trying to do) and when I saw I got the black so dark I assumed it was the effect everyone was looking for. I think I will do a video tutorial on it just to explain it better.
    Keep up the work, you are learning and while there is a few mistakes here and there I can see you are getting better at it and it won't be long before you look at things like building up wood on a neck to make a Floyd Rose nut shelf as being no big deal and not a big job.

He's a master luthier (guitar builder) and he has a ton of excellent in depth videos on building guitars. The secret is to pull the relevant parts from each video. Dan has great vids on which tools you actually need (surprisingly few) and Ben covers everything in great depth. Hopefully that'll help you get started! If I disagree with something that someone says in there video, does that make me a troll? I hope not. Anyway, it is my belief that sustain is contributed to more by the neck to body joint and not the neck plate to body joint. As long as your screws are tightened properly your sustain will not be affected with or without the plastic protector. The important thing is that the neck is as tight to the body as can be. I have them with and without. I never have a problem with neck tightness and if there is a difference in sustain, a K-9 couldn’t hear it. Again, this is my belief based on what I have in my collection. If nobody agrees, that’s cool. Just thought I’d share my thoughts. Your videos are great and very informative. I’m glad I subscribed. I think my favorite so far is your makeover of the Schecter PT Fastback II. That came out insane. I’d love to give something like that a try. Cheers.

      J. IV Guitar I've seen a few people do a similar trick and it's also turned out nice. Ben over at Crimson Guitars did something similar with a maple neck, except he used an oxy acetylene torch for the job since it gets way hotter. The point is to caramelize the sugars and drive out as much moisture as possible while doing this without actually setting the guitar on fire lol. Anyway, Dan's idea of wrapping wire and faux tiger striping is a very interesting twist on the concept :)

      These are tools that were once commonly owned by regular people. The parts for guitars are going to add up a lot faster than building a guitar. Obviously you don't need to buy a laser cutter for a single pickguard; unless you plan on making many of them. The same could be said for a lot of specialized tools, but with the basic tools listed above, lots of work can be done.

      musicgoround has some legit deals. mine has a rack of 30 dollar knockoff strats to dual recs. Got a bugera 333xl there for 300, not bad price.

      Brett Johnson just swap necks :]. u can get a cheap knock off neck and just crown and level it if needed and put in new tuners and a new nut and ur probably good

    • @sleepdeep305
      @sleepdeep305 Před 6 lety +1

      Hell, you might be able to get away with flipping the nut/strings, if you’re really desperate.

    • @brettjohnson1597
      @brettjohnson1597 Před 6 lety

      The Author tried that already....found a 1996 Fender Mexican Strat at a garage sale for $100 with hard case. Flipped nut and strings and it plays fine sounds good. However periodically while playing will my strumming hand with hit the volume and turn it down. Also have to use a cable with a right angle end or strumming hand hits it. And the worst part is it’s almost impossible to play above the 15ish fret as it isn’t cut out for that. Would cut it to work but the guitar is in mint condition and don’t want to ruin it. As for now it’s a great rthym guitar

    Dan...I love your videos! I'm on a budget and love to try and get the best for as little cost as possible. This Strat build was awesome! I don't play metal and don't like Floyd Rose tremelos, but I loved seeing you build this guitar! It's really a nice guitar for someone into that kind of music and I appreciate all styles. I have what may seem like a dumb question about the zebra pickups. I just installed a set on a Les Paul copy. I've seen them in all kinds of configurations color wise. Sometimes cream on top. Sometimes on the bottom. Some I've seen where the cream faces inward on both. That's how I did mine. Does it matter which way you install them if you're not doing a coil split? Thanks for any help!👍😎🎸🎶

    • @woofystevenson2943

    • @GunsandGuitars
      @GunsandGuitars  Před 6 lety

      It technically doesn’t matter, but people typically put the screw head poles on the outside and the flat poles on the inside. Not sure why though.

    I want people to know that they really can do this and end up with a great guitar. I did mine about a year ago. I used a no name body and a real Fender neck. Next I added new Gotoh tuners and Seymour Duncan pick ups. So for half the price of an American Standard Strat I now have a guitar that I'm proud to say I built and that I love to play every day.

    Another way to add stripe grain to wood is pretty easy just dip string in stain and lay it across the wood in whatever pattern you want.
