  • The Historic Union Cemetery sits alongside Woodside Road in Redwood City, CA, right in the middle of the San Francisco peninsula.
This was a wild west town that grew along with the gold rush, and some of the pioneers that showed up here were former Union Army veterans. They had an organization called The Grand Army Of The Republic that promoted veteran affairs and helped turn the area's first cemetery into a memorial to Civil War Union veterans.
Many prominent people lay at rest here, with some graves adorn with beautiful monuments. From wild west sheriffs deputies to county judges, this was the first cemetery listed as a California landmark.

My mom grew up on Oxford Street 1329. There used to be some huge Victorian houses on Oxford before they were torn down and replaced with duplexes and apartments. Very likely the people who lived in those houses are buried at Union Cemetery. When I grew up on Oxford Street it was very very different than today. There is or was a crooked sidewalk in front of the house because an old old oak tree was there on the edge of a creek.
I was at 1329 Oxford when the Quake of 1989 struck. The old oak tree lost a huge heavy branch which led to the whole tree being removed.

Also, Coloma, CA. is where James Marshall first discovered gold Jan. 24, 1848. I grew up out there. We had a lot of scary and sad stories about the place. We are talking about the 1960’s -70’s. There used to be a lot of sunken in graves where the coffins collapsed in on them. There was a mausoleum that someone had broken into. My brother used to tell me that people who destroyed grave stones would be eaten alive by worms.
There used to be a fertilizer garden store right next door. We joked about the fertilizer being the dead. 🙅🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Going over the pix I shot that day, I found a few headstones with the inscription "Here Rests a Woodman of the World" in different areas of the cemetery, maybe an unofficial fraternal organization...and Joe Kozuki, d.1903, aged 46 years; I wonder - what enticed him to come here from Japan? how did he make a living? why did he die relatively young with apparently no relatives? The Bible promises that soon God’s Kingdom will:
Set us free from the aging process. “Let his flesh become fresher than in youth; let him return to the days of his youthful vigor.”-Job 33:25.
Bring the dead back to life. “All those in the memorial tombs will hear [Jesus’] voice and come out.”-John 5:28, 29.
