Friends today we're taking a look at one of my all-time FAVORITE series... Assassins Creed. These games had me hooked from the very beginning and with news of a new release promising to go back to those roots, I just can't wait to talk about it. Something always bothered me about these games though, Eagle Vision. The sense that lets you see enemies through walls and track them, what is it? And it is really possible? Well, strap in Loyal Theorists, because I've got your answer!

As someone with Synesthesia, it definitely sounds a lot cooler than it is. I can only speak for myself, but this has never been an "active" ability for me. I do not choose what senses are mixed together nor when they mix; these are just brain pathways that have always been linked and always proc on the same things consistently. At this point I barely notice because if the smell of pine always produces the sensation of pine pitch between your fingers, then those two things are basically the same sensation. It just becomes part of how you experience things, and like how you don't feel the clothes you're currently wearing, if you focus on it you can feel your shirt and pants but the fact you can feel them really isn't important to actively be aware of.
That said, I think it's interesting you made the Synesthesia connection, because the most common form of Synesthesia is called Grapheme-Color Synesthesia, which is when certain symbols or concepts invoke certain colors within the brain. If you hear statements like "9 is magenta," "the letter "e" is pastel yellow" or "Wednesday is Periwinkle," that's Grapheme-Color Synesthesia (these are all examples of how mine presents). Additionally, there are two categories of Synesthesia; mine is the Associative type, which means when stimulus A happens, I think of something in sense B. This means that while I always ASSOCIATE the number 9 with the color magenta, I do not actively SEE any depiction of a 9 in the color of magenta. That would be the 2nd category: Projector types, in which stimulus A CAUSES sense B to activate in a specific way. Which is to say, if I had Projector-Type Grapheme-Color Synesthesia, it's possible that I may see haybales in a brighter white color than someone without, or see a dark red hue accompanying anyone with a visible weapon; if I was looking for or following someone in particular, I may even see everyone else as being darker or more dull, causing that person to stand out more vibrantly against the city.
Is it a little convenient and game-ified? Yeah, but it's also not implausible. Again, not an ability that you can "turn on or turn off;" plus, the most universal skill that Synesthesia gives you is the ability to confuse anyone that asks you for a description, because lord knows NOBODY knows what "This tastes purple" means.

Interesting observation : When using eagle vision, we always hear a sound. The "electronic burst" launching the wave, often with a little slow motion to give more gravitas to the ability. First, this could be active echolocation using frequencies outside the hearing capacity of normal humans. Secondly, eagle vision is shown as a wave with you at the center, usually being visually blocked by objects and walls exactly like sound travels in the air.

I never played the games, but I did read the Assassin's Creed manga based on Black Flag. I bring this up not because of eagle vision itself, but because of how and when the main character unlocked it. This has to do with James Kidd, one of the supporting characters, and Kenway's discovery of *her* identity. Obviously the manga has a lot of differences from the source material, but I just wanted to bring up how Kenway knew the truth, and Kidd tells him about eagle vision--
Kenway: I have something to ask of you.
      Kidd: Hm?
Kenway: Why do you dress like a man?
Kidd: Aiee!! How-how long have you known?!
Kenway: For a while. It happened during training with you, and the other Assassin.
      Kidd: What...?
Kenway: I had a strange feeling over myself. I could see everything, even things that were hidden. And you were one of them.
      Kidd: Wait a moment...
Kenway: Yes, you were disguised, but I could see your body. Your *chest* was a bit round, and uh, *something* was missing between your legs...
Kidd: Are you telling me that you used eagle vision?
Kenway: I don't know what it even was, but it *did* help me in my duel with the other Assassin, as I could predict his every move. And I could see underneath him like I did with you.

I’ve always pictured Eagle Vision to simply be a general sharpening of preexisting senses using certain techniques to notice things in the environment with much more precision. Lifeguards are able to immediately see if someone’s drowning in a crowded pool or beach because they scan the area using the Golden Ratio, quickly skimming the area from the outside spiraling inward and then repeating the process once they reach the center. It’s likely what we see our assassins doing, by looking at their surroundings from the edges of the area and then quickly spiraling their sight inward towards the center of the area they’re in.

This is kind of explained in AC Unity. When Arno is about to go into an assassination mission, he sits on a rooftop, closes his eyes, takes a deep breath and then focuses to take in all of the information from the environment around him. And that doesn't highlight the enemies. I think the highlight is more of a game mechanic, while taking in everything around you and focusing on your surroundings 100% is the acual 'eagle vision'

    • @Ineksi
      @Ineksi Před rokem +4

That's something I was thinking about, too. Not necessarily "real" synesthesia (albeit the neonatal variant explains *a lot*), but a mix of that together with un-filtering impressions we usually ignore. I mean, you can easily tell that a person is standing next to you in a quiet room, even if they hold their breath, but you wouldn't necessarily be able to if you were talking with someone else at the same moment.
That way, I think, the "all senses together" idea makes a lot more sense, plus mirror neurons. I mean, yes, that "sixth" and "seventh" sense are directed at ourselves, but I think one could train it somewhat further to make predictions about someone else's movements, balance, posture, tension etc. Which would give away a lot.

Matpat, the eagle sense can also be related to a more spiritual sense. The ability to sense the aura around someone. This would heavily apply to your synesthesia theory because one's arua changes color based on their emotions or intent. Anime has portrayed this immensely and "One Piece" is an excellent example of this factor. Also, in the series, "Record of Ragnoraok, a show where man and gods fight with one another, a human competitor, Jack the Ripper, has synesthesia as a means of identifying his victu,s emotions.

(minor spoiler ahead, I won't get into any detail) I'm not sure wether or not Jack the Ripper is an accurate representation of synesthesia, as emotions are not a sense, and synesthesia is usually a mashup of several senses. Later in the manga, another character is introduced, who's much closer to synesthesia : he feels what he sees, his senses of touch and sight are fused into one ! This is synesthesia for sure, though I'd be interested to know if field experts would describe Jack the Ripper's condition as synesthesia as well.

Just for correction. The Isu didn't mate with Neanderthals to create humans. They created both in labs, Neanderthals to be a military force and Humans to be a labour force. Eve was the first hybrid as her father, Phanes, fell in love with one of his human creations. Eve being 50/50 was immune to the effects of the Pieces of Eden and used an Apple of Eden to "awaken" Adam.

Synesthesia is when you associate things that AREN'T normally associated in that way.

There might be another additional effect.
In the eagle vision your world goes grey, thus the "bandwith" of vision reduces. You get a lot more info from contrasts.
This can happen in high adrenalin inducing situations.
This makes processing and your reactions faster and iirc its also a skill that can be tought.
So i propose that eagle vision is a combined effect.

A interesting thing about synesthesia is all the different variants that exist.
Colour-Grapheme - This Connects Colours and Characters such as Letters. A may be red for example
Mirror Touch - When You see Someone Move Their Body you feel the same sensations as if you are doing this also
Auditory-Visual - Sounds are Represented as Colours or Words
Visual-Auditory - Colours and Words are Represented as Sounds
Light-Olfactory - Certain Light Levels create Specific scents
Tactition-Olfactory - Smells create physical sensations like a shiver or being touched by another
Lexical-Gustatory - Where Specific Words become Tastes
There are numerous different combinations that when you really think about it mean that we could be experiencing the World in a rather amazing way if learnt.

Also, that second example (on the right) of synesthesia is so close to mine. For whatever reason, it's hard to find an accurate representation for how I experience it. The only thing is; I also have (some level of) tetrachromacy, so I see it even more differently- this is why i can't stand different colors on pages/in words & numbers. In a similar way; I see more colours mentally, compared to visually- so, I probably can't visually demonstrate it, even to myself.

In the first Assassin’s Creed Eagle Vision was an ability that the Animus has whenever you are fully synchronized as it won’t work whenever the synchronisation bar wasn’t full as explained in the tutorial before Memory Block 1. However this didn’t make totally sense when Desmond Miles was able to use Eagle Vision at the end of the game as he couldn’t use it because he’s out of the Animus. It was explained in Assassin’s Creed II that Desmond got the Eagle Vision from the bleeding effect and is an ability that his ancestors can do not just an Animus ability that is only available when fully synched or healed (In AC2). The sequels followed the Assassin’s Creed II method except origins and odyssey.
