Years ago, when my (now ex) husband got out of the military, I traveled from Texas to Michigan with a 10" shubunkin in a 20 gallon aquarium...we put it in the front seat floorboard of the U-Haul, and left the canister filter in place while we traveled. At night we got a back room in a motel and ran an extension cord to our room :D (We also traveled with 2 dogs, a cat, and 2 infant to toddler children...in two vehicles...wasn't the most relaxing trip of my life...)

I use coolers. I drill a hole for an airtube when not traveling. If heat is needed, one plastic water bottle with warm water works for hours. If driving, the normal movement of the water provides enough oxygen. When you get to a hotel, use bubblers. I also like plastic plants when traveling to help them feel safe and reduce stress. When transporting African cichlids, try some upsidedown terracota pots or some will get killed...also include plastic plants to help. I want to know what airlines allow domestic transport of fish and how to import fish directly. I know we need a commerical import license, but is it feasilble?

@@AquariumCoop The bacteria would also die pretty quickly if they are in a sealed bag. If driving, you could just put it in a cooler, for example, and use a battery operated bubbler. They are around $15. That would work. I'd only do this though if the travel time with the fish was longer than 2 days. If traveling, don't feed your fish.

I know this is an older video so I may not get a response but I'm planning a move in the next 3 months and am still a beginner in the hobby so its my first move with fish.
I have a ten gallon with a betta, 12 neon tetras, and a few otos. It's about a 2.5 hour drive, so I'm planning on getting a 6.6 gallon ziploc tote. I kept the tub my betta originally came in and was planning on separating the betta in the tub and floating that inside the bigger tote.
With it being a shorter drive, will I need any kind of aeration during the trip itself? We're moving over a couple of days so the fish are getting their own trip down so I won't have to worry about unloading anything else and can get them set back up right away.
Should I plan to get a separate tote for the neons and the otos, or even just have a second one to bring down the rest of the water so that I don't shock them with a water change right away? And any advice for moving my sponge filter/filter media so that I can minimize the risk of crashing my cycle with the move?
