Allison, jackplate too high, avoid the dreaded bat turn

  • This is what happens when you run the jackplate too high. At the 1:25 mark, you'll see the right side dip, then the left. This is how the new XB21 reacts when the jackplate is too high. The prop doesn't loose bite like you'd expect with a traditional boat. The back end just won't take a set. Bump the jackplate down one bump and let her rip.

He was workin the wheel a lot through the middle of the run which is a good sign he is not the verge of losing directional control of the boat. It’s like a 3 point hydro plane going to a 1 point , only the prop is in the water, no boat, where does it go? Anywhere it wants to. I had both steering cables fall of a mercruiser out drive at 60mph. Mechanic that reinstalled the engine forgot to install the “C” clips. At 60 the steering got real loose, the boat wriggled and then the out drive paddle wheeled hard right. I flew into the back of the boat. My wife just got pushed up against the side of the boat. She didn’t know where I was. I was sitting on the floor behind her seat. Last boat ride she would go on with me. I mounted a 3.5 hp trolling motor and took at least an hour to get back to the launch. My DIY motor bracket failed its first test. I had every rope and bungee cord holding that 3.5 to the back of a 23’ go fast boat. At those speeds you don’t know what happens. It takes place in milliseconds. I don’t remember flying across the boat to the back, just sitting there wondering, WTF happened?

As long as you don’t chop the throttle while fully on the pad or let the bow drop you are good. Very few experienced Allison drivers can chop the throttle when on the pad over 80-100mph when crossing wakes or white caps and know exactly when to get back in the throttle to lift it back up. 30+ years of driving Allisons and I still try not to cut the throttle when hitting wakes.
