They always have more events to attend and he is obviously cold. He spends a lot of time on his feet doing events.
Have you seen his hands? They are frequently swollen, and many with fluid in their hands have it also in their feet. I know from personal experience that excess fluid can be very painful. This was also not long after his mother died. Many people get frustrated during stressful times. There comes a time when noise becomes overstimulating and all you want to do is sit down and have a hot drink in silence. Not to mention he had a procedure for his enlarged prostate which means he had to use the bathroom a lot, as well.

This is as far away from being a strop as it's possible to get :-) It's actually adorable and I'm now feeling slightly guilty because I do this to my sweet Husband of nearly 40 years all the time :-)
