  • John Isner has has one of the fastest and best ever serves in tennis. He takes on 2 players from the WTA Tour, Eugenie Bouchard and Agnieszka Radwanska, playing mixed doubles with Serena Williams in the Hopman Cup in 2015. Can the ladies return the monster Isner serve that even ATP players struggle to get back in play?

      It’s a combination of a beautifully fluid, efficient, technically near perfect motion, a, what, 6’8” starting point, added to a nice high ball toss hit at full extension, which puts his contact point at, just a guess, 15-18’ above the court. That, in effect, lowers the net (as compared to a shorter player trying the same angle) allowing Isner to hit an angle with the ball moving down without fear of hitting the net. Think of it like this: freeze Isner’s toss at its full height. Give the ball eyes at that moment. The court/angles/service box Isner’s ball can see is a very different view than other players’ toss at the same instant for them. The angles available from there are just logical. What makes them “freaky” is returners don’t see those angles from anyone else.

    • @MrSmithla
      @MrSmithla Před 2 lety

      It’s really the same concept as a wickedly angled volley hit on or behind the T is just a standard volley hit right on top of the net. Different angles are available at different locations on the same court.

Stronger bones, muscles, more muscles, more length. All on average ofcourse. So for an average woman to beat an average man she must be a lot better at the sport. Or a lot fitter. Or both. And many women are, it is just not an equal playing field. Very interesting to see this (for one time) Especially against the first woman. She was almost chanceless. Even on this, the highest level. I miss watching Radwanska play, she has such great instincts on court despite not having a powerful game. If I needed someone to win a service game to save my life . . . Roger Federer. Not the absolute best serve but for a normal height guy who has to rely on nothing but pure talent he is overall the best IMO. Placement, consistency, clutch, second serve high quality, and can follow it up with a quick forehand put away every damn time if you don't hit a great return. Sampras was right there too. Kyrgios is from another planet altogether but just too inconsistent, but his serve is terrifying when it is on.

So no, of course not average for gen pop, but very average among elite pro male tennis players. The taller players have a big advantage on the serve because of the angle they achieve from the higher contact point, not to mention the leverage from longer arms. So Fed and Sampras both are achieving incredible serving efficiency without the relative advantage of being taller than the other players. I suppose I should have qualified this but it would be obvious to anyone who follows the game closely.

      Some of these names may sound a bit unfamiliar to you, but apart from Karolovic and Opelka they are all multiple Slam winners. For many of them their serve has been their most used weapon during their career!
      Don‘t get me wrong, Isner is a great server and certainly among the best in history. However, we haven’t seen him serving under the pressure of a grand slam final. In the Elite Tennis Professional level everybody is able to hit great serves, but the main issue is copying with the pressure of delivering when it matters the most!
      As long as Isner has not managed to reach a final of a slam I would not call him the greatest server of all time. Still he is probably among the top three in terms of raw ability to hit aces and unreturned serves.
      The only server I would always prefer against him is Karlovic, since his placement is better and he has better mental strength.

    There's an easy fix for mix doubles. Whenever a woman is returning a man's serve, instead of the man getting two chances to serve, the woman should get two chances to return.

      Volley is ok too. But look how many serve wonders we have left. Only him. Respect him for that, quite an accomplishment. Pretty soon we will only have all round power hitters. Which is fine. Possibly even better. But in the meantime we have seen these serves as well.

    There is no comparison between ATP serve speeds and WTA serve speeds. It's like, Novak Djokovic could try a couple of months on the WTA, but he would win absolutely every tournament meanwhile dominating all of his opponents. Top 20 Female players, can't even compete with top 300-500 male players. It just has to do with size, strength, and separation of talent at the professional level when it comes to gender. Same thing with basketball, same thing with hockey, or football, or soccer, or any sport.
