- Future NFL stars Baker Mayfield and Patrick Mahomes rewrote the NCAA record books when Oklahoma and Texas Tech met on October 22, 2016. Mayfield would throw for 545 yards and 7 touchdowns, while Patrick Mahomes threw for 734 yards and 5 touchdowns in the Sooners’ 66-59 win over the Red Raiders.

Great game offensively -- just remember Baker was throwing to NFL players in Didi Westbrook and Joe Mixon. Oklahoma had an overwhelming talent advantage. Mahomes did a ton to keep Texas Tech in the game. Baker was amazing; you still have to make the throws even if you have all that talent.
A game a couple years ago in college has nothing to do with games played in the NFL a couple years later.
You are making a ton of false equivalencies. Also, Jarvis Landry was considered one of the best slot receivers in football. You are also trying to compare a QB leading the NFL in touchdown passes while throwing 0 interceptions versus a QB that 4 turnovers this past weekend.
Defensive rankings through 4 weeks of action doesn't state how good a defense is. Defensive rankings through 4 weeks is an indication of who have you played so far this season. Teams like the Chargers already played the Rams and the Chiefs. Teams like the Falcons have already played the Buccaneers and the Saints. Your defense would definitely look bad if you played those teams. The Jets have played the Dolphins, Jaguars, Browns, and Lions. The Jets have probably faced the least offensive talent so far through 4 games. No wonder their defense is ranked so high.
I am also a fan of Baker Mayfield. I don't know why you are so defensive, but Mayfield has not outplayed Mahomes this season. Mayfield did outplay Mahomes in college though. Baker Mayfield set the all time CFB efficiency mark twice.
Mike, what did Baker do the other day against Oakland? Raiders defense is terrible. Gruden keeps whining that he has no pass rush after he traded away Khalil Mack. Baker had 4 turnovers and several other throws that should have been picked off. Those 4 turnovers led to easy 21 points for the Raiders and cost the Browns 3 points at the very end of the game when they really needed it.

Patrick Mahomes is gonna be a super star in the NFL. You can tell he has that special something that all the greats have.
What he did the other night against the Broncos didn't have squat to do with the "college offense." It was backyard football with the plays breaking down due to a good pass rush by the Broncos and pretty solid coverage in their secondary. Mahomes was making a ton of plays outside the pocket and outside the structure of Reid's system.

Mahomes now is in a situation Mayfield was in at Oklahoma. He has an actual team around him to support the talent at QB. Don't prejudice yourself into thinking football is a one man show otherwise Texas Tech would have gone undefeated in 2016 under Mahomes. Its a team sport and Mayfield is now...uh humbled as Georgia told him.

Let's just be honest and acknowledge that Mayfield had way more talent on his team...including that Oklahoma Defense, which was way better than Texas Tech Defense. Look at Mayfield's passes...nothing special most of the time they are wide open. Mahomes is dropping that ball in places only his guy could get to.

This game was Epic, it was Madden IRL. 1708 Total Yards of Offense, 17 Total TDs, Mahomes: 734 Yards Passing, Baker 7 TDs and only 9 incompletions, Mixon 377 Total Yards, and 4 WRs went over 100 yards.

Alabama is defense, O line and a strong rb that can run straight down the middle 50 times a game. It's how they won all their championships recently.
I would still take OU over Alabama in a game where they remembered to play all four quarters. Nobody thought OU would beat Alabama in 2014, but they did when they weren't supposed to.
Alabama just has an advantage in an offensively weak conference historically. There have been outliers obviously, but until this year it was the same story. Who is going to have the beat defense and run the most during these games?

Baker (a walk on freshman) went 5-0 as the starter until he got hurt, The other two qbs won 3 games total, baker started the last 2 games and lost both of them, he only transferred bc he wasnt offered a scholarship by the team, mahomes wasnt on the team until the next season when baker wasnt there

Offensive units dominate a lot more in college than in pro. This is one of main reasons its so difficult to assess QBs in terms of pro success. Pro defenses are just better and give less time and less space. Many Qbs are good when there are open receivers lots of time but when the game is faster tighter small windows then the true skills are unveiled.
Bakers hype seemed very short lived. I prefer him over Patrick tbh.

I think Mahomes will hit a slight wall here at some point. I do think he’s totally legit though. I think Baker will over time prove to be the better QB. Mahomes has the natural talent edge. Baker...is a natural. Period. Time, as ever, will tell. No need to be mean about things we cannot yet know.
Scott Wallace Mahomes is definitely better in every aspect of the position. His ability to create plays with his legs, the accuracy of his throws in odd situations, and the pure strength of his arm are all talents you usually don’t find combined into one person. What he did at Tech with the lack of talent he was given was amazing.
