I don’t know how caran d’ache does it but neocolor 2 are amazing to dissolve. Daniel smith sticks of watercolour just leave a patch on the paper when used as a crayon. Winsor and newton had discontinued watercolour sticks that made okay marks and were more like crayons but left marks and didn’t dissolve well.
Seems it’s tricky to get stuff to not ruin the paper surface with marks and that also fully dissolves.
Museum aquarelle pencils are also the best at fully dissolving with faber castell albrect durer close behind.
I know what you mean and Neocolor is fabulous. With the others it might be an idea to scribble onto a palette or plate and then apply like a watercolour with a brush - worth a try.
